Abstract

PURPOSE: To determine the nonmetal elements in metal continuously at high precision, by introducing the gas hydrides of nonmetal elements in a specimen obtained by heating the specimen in a hydrogen stream directly into a mass spectrometer from a narrow passage opened at the end of said hydrogen stream.
CONSTITUTION: Metal specimen fine powder put in a specimen boat 1 is inserted into a furnace core tube 2. After purging the extraction system piping with argon gas 3, hydrogen 5 removed of impurities in a refining part 4 is passed while keeping a constant flow rate by means of a flow control part 12. According to the temperature elevation program preset in a temperature control part 8, the temperature of a heating furnace 9 is raised, and the nonmetal elements in the specimen are caused to react with hydrogen to produce gas hydrides, which are transferred on the hydrogen stream. Then, part of such gas hydrides is passed into a narrow passage 14 connected to a branch pipe 6, and then introduced in a mass spectrometer 7, which discharges air through a vacuum pump 11 of a large capacity, to be analyzed. The obtained mass spectrum is fed into a control-record part 10 to be processed.
