Abstract

PURPOSE: To secure a flat display of a large screen with a high luminance and low power consumption through a simple constitution by leading out the light enclosed inside the plate-type optical wave director from each position distributed at the optical wave director with variation of the refractive index and based on the picture information.

CONSTITUTION: Plate-type optical wave director 4 of picture display unit 3 featuring the light transmissivity are formed into the optical reflector face at full outer side face except the area where light A is introduced from light source 1 and encloses the introduced light A with a uniform energy distribution over the entire region. Medium 6 featuring the same or higher refractive index than director 4 is formed into sheet-type substance 7 composed of the flexible and transparent resin and distributed close and over the full range on one face 5 of director 4. And pressers G₁, G₂... which are driven selectively with picture information B sent from picture inforamtion source 2 are distributed at positions P₁', P₂'..., and in case position P₁' is pressed through driving of presser G₁, medium 6 touches corresponding position P₁ of director 4. Thus, the equivalent refractive index is varied at position P₁, and then the enclosed light is led outside in the form of light L₁ through position P₁ and P₁' to perform display.
