Abstract

PURPOSE: To code a variable-density picture effectively by controlling at least either scanning input signal or comparison reference signal at each scanning-line period when converting a difference signal, obtained by comparing the scanning input signal with the comparison reference voltage, into a binary signal.
CONSTITUTION: Scanning circuit 1 scans on a picture optically and then converts the signal into an electric signal, and comparator circuit 3 compares the output of circuit 1 with a comparison reference voltage and converts the difference signal into a binary signal. In this case, a pulse synchronizing with the horizontal scanning signal, a scan output, is applied to timing-signal application terminal 5 and then sent via counter 6 to comparator circuit 3, where at least either scanning input signal or comprison reference signal is controlled at each scanning line period, and the output of circuit 3 is outputted as a binary quantization signal via sampling circuit 4. Consequently, a variable-density picture can be coded effectively.
