Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare polyamide having uniform molecular weight, by keeping the pressure at the gas-phase part of a polymerization tower to a definite value slightly higher than the maximum atmospheric pressure, thereby preventing the variation of the gas-phase pressure with the variation of atmospheric pressure.
CONSTITUTION: Caprolactam is pre-polymerized at 200W270°C under a pressure of 0.1W2.0 kg/cm2 in the presence of water, and the prepolymer is polymerized in a continuous polymerizing tower 1. The mixture of generated water and lactam monomer and the introduced inert gas (N2) are introduced from the gas-phase of the polymerization tower 1 through a piping 8, a partial condenser 6 and a condenser 7 to water-seal tanks 12 and 13. The rate of discharge is controlled with a flow-control valve of the piping 8 according to the pressure of the gas-phase part of the polymerization tower 1, and the pressure is maintained to a definite value slightly higher than the maximum atmospheric pressure, i.e. about 1030 mb. The water-seal tank 12 has a depth of about 2 cm and used for the pressure controlling, and the tank 13 has a depth of about 50 cm and acts a role of the safety valve in case of an abnormally low atmospheric pressure.
