Abstract

PURPOSE: To maintain the ratio of inflow of substrate to amount of microorganism (F/M ratio) at an appropriate level through control of excessive sludge with quick and accurate detection of changes in the dynamic nature of inflow load or microorganism (activated sludge).
CONSTITUTION: In an aeration tank 2, provided are first-and second-grade oxygen consumption gauges 5 and 6 for measuring the whole oxygen consumption of activated sludge and secular changes in the oxygen consumption in the state of endogenous respiration and a suspended mixture densitometer 7 for measuring the concentration of activated sludge. A sludge returning pipe 8 between a final sedimentation pond 4 and an aeration tank 1 is provided with an return sludge flowmeter 10 while an excessive sludge pipe 11 between the final sedimentation pond 4 and an initial sedimentation pond 1 with an excessive sludge flowmeter 12. CPU 14 computes the results of measurement from the afore-mentioned measuring devices 5 to 7, 9, 10 and 12, whose output controls an excessive sludge pump 13.
