Abstract

PURPOSE: To attain a stable measurement for a long time, by using an yeast of trichosporon family.
CONSTITUTION: A temperature preservation jacket 12 is maintained at a constant temperature by water of constant temperature which is supplied to and discharged from the jacket through a supply pipe 21 and a discharge pipe 22. A phosphrous buffer liquid saturated with oxygen is made to flow at a constant velocity from an inlet 19 to an outlet 20 througha flow cell 13 until the output from a microbiological electrode 11 reaches an equilibrium electric current value. Then, the specimen liquid is supplied from a supply 15 into the flow cell 13 to contact the microbiological electrode 11. In consequence, the organic matters in the specimen liquid is diffused into the porous membrane and is utilized by the fixed yeast. The difference between the equilibrium current when the amount of oxygen has reached the equilibrium state and the equilibrium current before the supply of the specimen liquid is in proportion to the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).
