Abstract
PURPOSE:To measure the opening position of an optical fiber by converting the electric signals, which have been subjected to FM modulation by the modulated waves of triangular waves, into optical signals to guide then into a fiber to be measured and by converting the optical signals reflected from the opening position into electric signals. CONSTITUTION:The position of the broken opening midway of an optical fiber is measured. The modulated waves of triangular waves, which are generated from an FM modulator 1, are converted by an electro-optical converter 3 into optical signals, which are guided from a half mirror 4 into a fiber 6 to be measured. The optical signals reflected at a point shown in broken line are reflected by the half mirror 4 and are converted by a photoelectric converter 8 into electric signals. The resultant electric signals are mixed with the above modulated electric signals so that beat frequency signals are taken out. From these beat signals, the maximum beat frequency signals are detected and processed by a processor 12 so that the distance L of the fiber 6 from the incident point to the broken point A can be attained.
