Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to measure the loss easily and highly accurately at the measuring site by detecting at the incident end the intensity of optical pulses which have transmitted back and forth through an optical fiber to be measured.
CONSTITUTION: A measuring light source 1 is subjected to pulse modulation by a pulse generator 2, and the resultant optical pulse train is divided into two by an optical branching circuit 3. One of the pulse trains divided enters a fiber 5 to be measured and is reflected at a total reflection terminal device 7 so that it is guided into an optical signal detector 8 after it has transmitted back and forth in the optical fiber 5. The other pulse train is guided as reference signals into an optical detector for the reference signals. The output of the detector 4 is converted into a DC output by a synchronous detecting circuit 9, whereas the output of the detector 8 is converted through a gate circuit 10 into a DC output by asynchronous detecting circuit 10. The DC output 12 of the reference signals is compared with the DC output 13 of the signals having reciprocated once through the fiber 5 by means of a comparator circuit 4 so that the desired loss can be measured.
