Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a device having excellent characteristics for locating a troubled point of a power cable by converting the surge detected at end into an optical signal by a photoelectric converting element and by transmitting the converted signal to the other end so that the time difference between the arriving time of the optical signal at the end and the surge detecting time at the other end.
CONSTITUTION: The surge, which is detected at the terminal A of a powef cable 1, is fed through a high frequency filter 3 and then has its time measured by a time meter 4. The surge detected the other terminal B is also fed through the high frequency filter 3 to an optical voltage switch 7. Thus, the optical signal pulses from a light source 10 are transmitted through an optical fiber 9 to a photoelectric converter 8. These optical signals are returned by the converter 8 into the electric pulse signals, which are measured by the time meter 4. The time period, for which the optical signal pulses run through the optical fiber 9 from the switch 7 to the coverter 8, is known to be constant because the length of the cable is known, so that the timing correction is made in advance in the time meter 4.
