Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the position of a fault point with good accuracy by applying the carrier wave having undergone amplitude modulation to a cable through a hybrid circuit, fetching the waves reflected from the fault point and comparing the phase of the envelope of the time when transmitted from the input side and that of the reflected waves.
CONSTITUTION: The carrier S of a carrier signal generator 1A is applied to the cable 3 to be measured and terminal device 4 by way of a hybrid circuit 3. When the cable 3 and terminal device 4 are matched, the carrier S does not come out from the terminal 23 of the circuit 2, but when a fault occurs in the cable 3, the carrier S reflects at the fault point and returns to the terminal 21. On the other hand, the signal which the carrier S of the signal generator 1A is amplitude-modulated 6 by the modulating wave M is applied as a reference signal to a phase detector 7. The modulating wave M having been demodulated by a detector 5 connected to the terminal 23 of the circuit 2 is applied to the phase detector 7 and is compared with the above-mentioned reference signal, whereby the phase difference of both is detected and the distance up to the fault point is obtained.
