Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform highly accurate measurement with a simple constitution by detecting the ultrasonic pulses generated by an exciting means moving according to displacements with the receiving means provided at both ends and differentially processing the ultrasonic wave arrival time.
CONSTITUTION: An exciting means 4 moving to the positions corresponding to displacements generates ultrasonic pulses according to the oscillation outputs of an oscillator OS. The ultrasonic pulses propagate in a magnetostrictive wire in both directions and are detected in the receiving means 2, 3 provided at both ends of the wire 1, thus resetting the flip-flops FF1, FF2 which are set by the oscillation outputs of the oscillator OS. This causes the FF1, FF2 to generate the pulses of the width corresponding to the ultrasonic wave arrival time proportional to displacement positions. When these pulses are differentially processed in an arithmetic circuit CK, the errors owing to the ultrasonic pulse generating time delay of the means 4 with respect to the oscillation outputs of the oscillator OS, etc. are negated. Hence, the displacement positions are detected highly accurately with the simple constitution.
