Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare a cation-modified starch derivative useful as a dispersant for filler, an antistatic agent, etc., and giving highly transparent aqueous solution, by treating starch or its alkylene oxide-derivative with an inorganic alkali and reacting the product with an ammonium salt. CONSTITUTION:1 part by weight of starch or its alkylene oxide-derivative is treated with an inorganic alkali, e.g. sodium hydroxide, etc. (preferably 0.05-0.4 mole on the basis of the anhydrous glucose unit) at 40-60 deg.C in preferably 4-7 parts by weight of a mixed solvent of water and an alcohol. The product is reacted with a glycidyltrialkylammonium salt expressed by the formula (R is 1-3C alkyl; X is chlorine, etc.) (preferably 0.16-1.3 mole on the basis of an anhydrous glucose unit), and neutralized with an acid to give the desired cation-modified starch derivative.
