器を電気的にマイクロコントローラに結合するために
は、高価でしかも複雑な多層メタライゼーション方式(m
ulti-layer metallization system)が必要となる。更
に、複数の光結合器を使用すると、電子システムを実装
するアセンブリ基板の大型化を招くことになる。

合器を提供する。この多方向光結合器は、アセンブリ基
板,アセンブリ基板の第1領域に結合されたエミッタ,
アセンブリ基板の第2領域に結合された別のエミッタ,
アセンブリ基板の第3領域に結合された検出器,アセン
ブリ基板の第4領域に結合された別の検出器,エミッタ
および検出器を結合し、エミッタおよび検出器が所定の
方向の第1信号を送信および受信するように構成する光
透過性領域,ならびに別のエミッタおよび別の検出器を
結合し、別のエミッタおよび別の検出器が異なる方向の
第2信号を送信および受信するように構成する別の光透
過性領域を含む。

質に検出させることが可能な他の光の波長を含むものと

図1では、素子10の説明を簡略化するために、基板1
1を半導体のリードフレームとして図示してある。しか
しながら、他のタイプのアセンブリ基板も基板11とし
て使用可能であることは理解されよう。他のタイプのア
センブリ基板には、ボール・グリッド・アレイ(ballgri
d array) 等が含まれるが、これに限定される訳ではな
い。基板11は、複数の電気リード12,13,14,
15,16,17,18,19を含み、これらは互いに
電気的に分離されている。基板11は、8本のリードを
有するものとして図示されているが、基板11は適切な
本数であればいずれの本数のリードを有してもよいこと
は理解されよう。素子10に対して、リード12,1
3,14,15は1組のリードを構成する。これらは、
平面状であり、ほぼ平行で、互いに隣接している。加え
て、素子10のリード16,17,18,19は、別の
1組のリードも有し、これらも平面状であり、ほぼ平行
で、互いに隣接している。更に、これら2組のリードは
互いに対称的であり、互いにほぼ同一平面にあり、素子
10の対向端にある。リード12,13,14,15,
16,17,18,19は、以後の製造工程の間に折り
曲げることにより、表面実装またはその他の所望の形状
を形成可能であることは理解されよう。

部20および受信部23を電気的に分離し、かつリード
13,17を電気的に分離しなければならない。送信部
20および受信部23は、領域24内に構成されている
ので、送信部20は光信号を発生することができ、この
光信号は方向26に向かって領域24を通過し、受信部
23まで進む。領域24は、光信号の強度を著しく減衰
することなく、この光信号を伝導即ち伝送できなければ
ならない。一例として、領域24は、透明なシリコン・
ダイ・コートまたはゲル,透明なエポキシ,ガラス物質
等で構成することができる。

しかしながら、送信部21および受信部22は領域25
内に構成されているので、送信部21は異なる光信号を
異なる方向27に向けて発生し、光信号は領域25を通

に第2光経路を設ける。したがって、光結合器71は、
複数の方向に複数の光経路即ち光チャネルを有する、マ
ルチチャネル素子である。光結合器71の4つのチャネ
ルにより、各々が単一の光チャネルを有する4つの別個
の光結合器を用いたシステムと比較して、システム60
は小型化を図ることができる。尚、光結合器71は、4
本のみの多方向光経路を有することに限定されるのでは
ないことは理解されよう。例えば、別の実施例では、光
結合器71は、11本またはあらゆる所望数の光経路を
有することができる。
機能およびマルチチャネル特性のために、相互接続系7
5の簡略化が可能となり、しかもシステム60の小型化
も可能となる。従来技術では、マルチチャネル光結合器
は多方向性ではなかった。何故なら、従来技術の光結合
器は、単一方向の光伝導性を有するに過ぎなかったから
である。したがって、従来技術のマルチチャネル光結合
器を使用すると、複数の相互接続レベルを有するクロス
オーバを相互接続系に使用しなければならない。当技術
では既知のように、クロスオーバは、1本の相互接続線
が他の相互接続線と交差する場合に生じる。しかしなが
ら、相互接続系75は、光結合器71,72,73,7
4の多方向機能のために、クロスオーバを必要としな
い。更に、相互接続系75はクロスオーバが不要なの
で、単一レベルの相互接続のみで構成することができ
る。したがって、相互接続系75は、従来技術において
必要とされる相互接続系と比較して、製造が安価でしか
も簡単である。

本発明の光結合器は、複数の方向に向かう複数の光経路
を有する。ここに記載した光結合器は、高価で複雑な多
層メタライゼーション方式の必要性を無くするものであ
る。更に、本発明の光結合器は、その製造プロセスが既
存の光結合器の製造技法と適合性があるので、コスト効
率的でもある。
照しながら特定して示しかつ説明したが、本発明の精神
および範囲から逸脱することなく、形態および詳細にお
ける変更が可能であることは、当業者には理解されよ
う。例えば、領域24,25(図1)の具体的な組成の
ような、ここに記載した多数の詳細は、本発明の理解を
容易にするために与えられたものであって、本発明の範
囲を限定するために与えたのではない。更に、単一の光
結合器における複数の光経路は、互いに平行である必要
はないことは理解されよう。加えて、単一の光結合器内
の複数の光経路は2方向以上の方向を有し得ることも理
解されよう。例えば、光結合器は、3本の光経路を有
し、これらは互いに垂直で、デカルト座標系のX,Y,
Z軸と同様とすることも可能である。したがって、本発
明の開示は、限定を意図するものではない。逆に、本発
明の開示は、特許請求の範囲に記載されている、本発明
の範囲の例示であることを意図するものである。

- 【請求項1】多方向光結合器であって:互いに電気的に
分離された第1領域,第2領域,第3領域,および第4
領域を有するアセンブリ基板(11);前記第1領域に
結合された第1エミッタ(20);前記第2領域に結合
された第2エミッタ(21);前記第3領域に結合され
た第1検出器(23);前記第4領域に結合された第2
検出器(22);前記第1エミッタ(20)および前記
第2検出器(23)を結合する第1光透過性領域(2
4)であって、前記第1エミッタ(20)および前記第
1検出器(23)が第1方向の第1信号を送信し受信す
るように構成する前記第1光透過性領域(24);およ
び前記第2エミッタ(21)および前記第2検出器(2
2)を結合する第2光透過性領域(25)であって、前
記第2エミッタ(21)および前記第2検出器(22)
が前記第1方向とは異なる第2方向の第2信号を送信し
受信するように構成する前記第2光透過性領域(2
5);から成ることを特徴とする多方向光結合器。 - 【請求項2】多方向光結合器であって:互いに電気的に
分離された第1領域,第2領域,第3領域,および第4
領域を有するアセンブリ基板(11);前記第1領域に
結合された第1エミッタ(20);前記第2領域に結合
された第2エミッタ(21);前記第3領域に結合され
た第1検出器(23);前記第4領域に結合された第2
検出器(22);前記第1エミッタ(20)および前記
第2検出器(23)を結合する第1光透過性領域(2
4)であって、前記第1エミッタ(20)および前記第
1検出器(23)が第1方向の第1信号を送信し受信す
るように構成する前記第1光透過性領域(24);前記
第2エミッタ(21)および前記第2検出器(22)を
結合する第2光透過性領域(25)であって、前記第2
エミッタ(21)および前記第2検出器(22)が前記
第1方向とは異なる第2方向の第2信号を送信し受信す
るように構成する前記第2光透過性領域(25);前記
第1光透過性領域(24)の上に位置する反射層(4
3);および前記第1および第2光透過性領域(24,
25)ならびに前記反射層(43)を包囲する封入材
(28);から成ることを特徴とする多方向光結合器。 - 【請求項3】電子素子であって:第1組のリードと、第
2組のリードとを有し、前記第1および第2組のリード
の各々が第1部分と第2部分とを有するリードフレーム
(11);前記第1組のリードの前記第1部分に結合さ
れた第1発光素子(20);前記第2組のリードの前記
第1部分に結合された第2発光素子(21);前記第1
組のリードの前記第2部分に結合された第2光検出素子
(23);前記第2組のリードの前記第2部分に結合さ
れた第2光検出素子(22);前記第1発光素子(2
0)および前記第2光検出素子(22)を封入する第1
電気的絶縁領域(41);前記第2発光素子(21)お
よび前記第1光検出素子(23)を封入する第2電気的
絶縁領域(42);および前記第1および第2電気的絶
縁領域(41,42)を封入するパッケージ材(2
8);から成ることを特徴とする電子素子。
