Description
【発明の詳細な説明】本発明は強誘電性スメクチック材
料を用いたスメクチック液晶デバイスの製造方法に係
る。液晶装置は一般的に2つのガラス板または壁の間に
薄い液晶材料層を挟んだものから成る。両方の壁の内面
に薄い透明電極をデポジットする。このような液晶層と
壁と電極とを組合せたものを液晶セルと呼ぶことが多
い。2つの電極間に電界を印加すると、液晶分子が電界
内で回転してオン状態になる。電界を除去すると、分子
は反転してオフ状態になる。オフ状態はセルの組立て前
に壁に対して行なわれる表面処理および液晶材料の種類
によって決定されるものである。オン状態とオフ状態で
は光透過特性が異なる。デバイスによってはオン状態と
オフ状態を視覚的に区別するために1つまたはそれ以上
の偏光子および/または色素を要するものがある。大雑
把に言って液晶材料にはネマチック、コレステリック、
スメクチックの3種類の相があり、それぞれ分子の秩序
性が異なる。このような材料が液晶相を呈するのは、固
相と等方性液晶の間の限られた温度範囲だけである。液
晶相の温度範囲内で、材料はネマチック相、コレステリ
ック相、スメクチック相のうち1種またはそれ以上の相
を呈する場合があるが、通常はその動作温度範囲に亘っ
て1種類の液晶相のみ呈するものを選択する。本発明は
強誘電性スメクチック液晶材料を使用する装置の製造方
法に係る。現在、表示装置は一方の壁に電極を行状に形
成し、もう一方の壁に列状に電極を形成して構成されて
いる。これらが集まって、大型表示装置の上に個別にア
ドレス可能な素子から成るx−yマトリックスを形成す
る。このような表示装置にアドレスする方法の1つがマ
ルチプレックス方式、すなわち1行毎に装置全体のアド
レスを終わるまでアドレスして行く方法であり、表示が
必要になる度にこれを繰返す。別の種類の表示装置とし
て、オン状態とオフ状態を用いて光学シャッタを形成す
るものがある。さらに別の種類の表示装置は光学記憶装
置として使用される。これまではこのような装置にネマ
チック、コレステリックおよびスメクチック液晶材料が
使用されている。装置の多くが抱える問題の1つに、2
つの状態間での切換え速度、すなわち応答時間の問題が
ある。大抵の表示装置では応答時間を速くする必要があ
る。90度捩って構成したネマチック材料の応答時間で
普通100ミリセカンドである。スメクチック材料を含
む装置はネマチック材料やコレステリック材料を用いた
装置ほど広範囲に使用されるに至っていない。現存のス
メクチック材料を基材とする表示装置が必要な特性を備
えていないためである。しかし最近になって、切換え速
度が速く、双安定特性を有するスメクチック強誘電性が
重要視されるようになった。例えば、N.A.Clar

99−901を参照され度い。例えばSC,SI,
SF,SJ,SG,SH,等の傾斜液晶スメクチック相
にあるキラル材料が強誘電性を示すことが分かってい
る。これについては、R.B. Meyer,L.Li
ebard,L,Strzelecki,P.Kell
er著, J.de Physigue(Let
t.),36,L−69(1975)に記載されてい
る。強誘電性またはキラルスメクチック(S*)材料を
用いた装置には、セルが不均等になり継ぎ合せたような
(patchy)状態になるという欠点がある。捩れネ
マチック装置に使用するような擦過ポリイミド材料など
従来の配向層を使用した装置において特に特徴的に生じ
る問題点として、「ジグザグ」欠陥がある。この欠陥は
顕微鏡検査で見ることができ、セルがコントラストレベ
ルや観測角の異なる領域に分かれていることが解る。こ
のため、スメクチックC材料を用いた表示装置やシャッ
タの外観が容認し難い状態となるのである。本発明で
は、接触する液晶分子に大きな傾斜角(high ti
lt)を与えるセル壁面処理方法を用いることによっ
て、上記の問題点を解決する。本発明により提供される
液晶デバイスの製造方法は、電極構造を一方の面に担侍
する2つのセル壁部を設ける段階と、前記セル壁部の電
極を担侍する表面に対して表面配向処理を施す段階であ
って、該処理は配向方向と液晶材料に対する5度以上の
表面チルトとを与えることと、電極構造を担侍し表面配
向処理が施された表面がお互いに向き合うようにして、
スペーサによって一定間隔離されるように該セル壁部を
配置する段階と、キラルスメクチック相を有する液晶材
料であって、該スメクチック相より上の温度範囲におけ
るコレステリック相と、該コレステリック相の上の温度
範囲における等方相とを含有する液晶材料を用意する段
階と、該キラル液晶材料をその等方相にまで加熱する段
階と、このように加熱された材料を2つのセル壁部の間
に導入する段階と、該材料を2つのセル壁部の間に封止
する段階と、良好な配向と一様な外観を与えるべく、該
材料をそのコレステリック相から該スメクチック相まで
緩慢に冷却する段階と、少なくとも1つの偏光子を一つ
のセル壁部に隣接して、その偏光子の光学軸が液晶分子
配向方向に実質的に平行になるように配置する段階と、
液晶材料に二色性色素を添加するか、第2の偏光子をセ
ル壁部に隣接して、2つのセル壁部がこの2つの偏光子
の間におかれるようには位置する段階と、を含有する。
2つのセル壁の配向方向は同一方向または反対方向で平
行とするが、多少の変動は容認される。偏光子の間に遅
延器を組入れて色およびコントラストを最適化するこも
できる。反射器を用いて装置を反射光で観察するように
しても好い。その場合は第2偏光子の代わりに遅延器を
セルと反射器の間に設ける。キラルスメクチック材料
は、スメクチック相と等方性相の間で周囲温度以上の温
度においてコレステリック相を有する。好適には、スメ
クチック相とコレステリック相の転移温度から上0.1
℃またはそれ以上の温度範囲に亘ってコレステリックピ
ットPが層の厚さdの半分より大きくなるようにする。
材料の自発分極係数PSは少なくとも0.1nC/cm
2、好適には1nC/cm2またはそれ以上である。液
晶材料を加熱して等方性相とした後、2つの孔を介して
毛細管作用によりセル壁の間に導入してこれらの孔を実
質的に封止するか、あるいは1つの孔を介して真空充填
により導入する。液晶材料を定位置に配し終わると、こ
れを加熱してコレステリック相とし、周囲温度まで徐冷
する。この操作が良好な配向の獲得と外観を均質にする
のを促進する働きをする。一般的な冷却速度はスメクチ
ック相とコレステリック相の転移温度の±5℃の範囲内
で0.05〜2℃/分である。ほとんどの表示装置につ
いては周囲温度を0℃〜40℃とみなすことができる
が、計器類やその他の機器に装着される表示装置の周囲
温度は100℃に達する場合もある。図1,図2,図3
に示したセル1は、スペーサリング4および/または分
散スペーサによって約2〜15μmの間隔をあけて配設
した2つのガラス壁2,3を含む。透明酸化錫から成る
電極構造5,6が両壁の内面に形成されている。これら
の電極は従来の行(x)と列(y)の形状半径と角度
(r,θ)の形状または文字数字表示用の7セグメント
またはそれ以上のセグメント表示装置とすることができ
る。スメクチック液晶材料層7が壁2,3とスペーサリ
ング4の間に含まれる。偏光子8,9がセル1つの前と
後にそれぞれ配設される。直流電圧源10から制御ロジ
ック11を経て、リード線14,15により電極構造
5,6に接続されている駆動回路12,13に給電され
る。セル表示装置は透過光によって観察することができ
るが、その場合はタングステン電球16のような光源を
表示装置の後方に配設する。選択的方法として、偏光子
の後方に反射器17を配設し、反射光によって表示装置
を観察するようにしても良い。さらに、壁3と偏光子9
の間に遅延器(不図示)を配設する場合もある。電極
5,6を被覆した壁2,3は組立て前に周知の方法であ
る一酸化ケイ素の斜め蒸着により表面処理される。これ
については、例えばG.B. 1,454,296,
1,472,247, 1,470,592に記載され
ている。一酸化ケイ素の流れを基板表面に対して15度
までの角度で壁上に堆積させる。この方法を上記明細書
に記載の方法でネマチック液晶材料を用いると、液晶分
子が、均等に直線配向すると共に分子と壁の間の傾斜角
が30度となる。この整列は液晶分子を配向させる擦過
と類似しているが、擦過の場合の傾斜角は約2度であ
る。SiOの蒸着を15度までの蒸着角度と15〜30
度の蒸着角度で連続的に行なうことにより、いろいろな
分子傾斜角度を作り出すことができる。これら2つの方
向で堆積する材料の量を変えることによって傾斜角を0
〜45度の間で変化させることができる。スメクチック
材料はスメクチック相の上でピッチが長いコレステリッ
ク相を有するものが望ましい。分子26とマイクロレイ
ヤ25の両方の均一な配向を得るために、装置の用途に
より例えば40℃あるいは100℃にもなる装置動作温
度以上の高温においてコレステリック相を有するスメク
チック材料を使用することが必要である。図4aはコレ
ステリック相を有する典型的な従来のスメクチック材料
に関するコレステリックピッチP対温度曲線を示す。温
度が低下してコレステリック相とスメクチック相の転移
温度に接近するに従って、ピッチPは無限大に大きくな
る。この転移温度から離れると、コレステリックピッチ
が非常に小さくなり、普通は1μm未満となる。本願発
明と同時に出願した同時係属出願であるGB 86 0
8,114および 86 08,115に記載の発明の
表示装置はこの相転移温度から上少なくとも0.1℃に
亘るコレステリック相において長いピッチを有するもの
である。この範囲は好ましくは5℃であり、理想的には
コレステリック温度範囲の全体で長いピッチを有するの
が良い。この温度範囲内では層の厚さをdとすると最小
ピッチPが4dより大きい。上述の材料はいくつかの方
法で達成することができる。例えば左旋性コレステリッ
ク捩れ方向を有するキラル成分1種類またはそれ以上と
右旋性コレステリック捩れ方向を有するキラル成分1種
類またはそれ以上を組合わせる。但し左旋性成分はいず
れも右旋性成分のラセミ化合物でないことを条件とす
る。必要なスメクチック相を備えていれば、この混合物
をそれだけ用いることができる。また非キラル液晶材料
またはラセミ液晶材料は、例えばスメクチック7Cホス
ト材料にキラル混合物を添加しても良い。キラル成分の
種類によって温度/ピッチ特性が異なる場合がある。こ
の場合は結果的に得られるピッチがスメクチック/コレ
ステリック相転移温度より上の温度範囲において所要の
値となるようにする必要がある。捩れ方向が反対のキラ
ル成分を用いた場合、結果的に得られる混合物の自発分
極値PSが所要の値となるようにする必要がある。全て
のキラル成分がその捩れ方向とは無関係に同方向のS*
分極を有する場合がある。すなわちそれらのPSが加算
される。あるいはまた、1つまたはそれ以上のキラル成
分のPSを逆の符号のものとして、正味のPSが十分な
値となるようにすることもできる。上記材料を達成する
もう1つの方法としては、コレステリック捩れ方向およ
びS*分極方向が同じであるが、なおかつ上記のコレス
テリックピッチ値を満足するキラル成分を1つまたはそ
れ以上使用する方法がある。このような混合物は単独で
用いても良いし、SCホスト材料のような非キラルまた
はラセミ液晶材料と併用しても良い。コレステリック相
におけるピッチを長くする結果、材料を冷却してSC *
相にすると、セル壁処理による均一な配向が生じる。そ
の結果が図3に示す配向である。スメクチック相におけ
るピッチは約1μmより大きくなるように、また好適に
はそれよりはるかに大きくなるように構成する。コレス
テリック相でのピッチ補整を図4a,図4b,図4cに
示す。図4aはコレステリック相からスメクチック相へ
の転移を示す非補整材料に関してコレステリックピッチ
と温度の関係を示したものである。この転移においてピ
ッチが無限大に向かう。図4bの補整材料は、転移温度
より数度上の所でピッチが大きくなり、それより下では
減少を示している。材料を適当に選択することによっ
て、このピッチの増加を図4cのように転移温度に近付
けることもできるが、数度の相違は最終的な結果に影響
を及ぼすことはないようである。液晶材料をセル内に導
入すると図3において矢印EEで示した蒸着方向に沿っ
てセル壁の液晶分子が配向し、表面傾斜角が例えば30
度になる。2つの壁2と壁3でのEの方向は同じでも反
対でも良い。液晶分子は印加された電圧の極性により、
2つの配向方向D1,D2のうち何れか一方をとること
が観察される。通常の電圧は±10〜50ボルトであ
る。これら2つの配向方向を図3では実線D1と破線D
2で示しており、それぞれ蒸着/配向方向Eの両側に位
置している。直流パルスを印加した時に2つの状態間で
のスイッチングが速くなるのは、材料のもつスメクチッ
ク強誘電性によるものである。通常の場合、液晶材料の
種類により数μsから数ms、例えば1msでセルをD
1とD2の間で切換えることができる。これら2つの方
向D1,D2はPSの2つの方向を表わしており、アッ
プ方向とダウン方向と呼ばれることが多い。材料の組成
により、2つの方向D1,D2の開きは約45度にな
る。図1と図2に示すように、偏光子8,9は光軸を交
差させて配設される。偏光子8がその軸を方向D1と平
行に整列される。セル1は分子整列方向D1またはD2
と平行な平面に偏光された光を透過する。即ちセルの一
方の状態D1においては、偏光子8とセル1と偏光子9
とを組合せたものを通過する光はごくわずかになる。と
ころがセルがD2の状態にある時は、両方の偏光子8,
9の光軸に対して分子が45度の角度を成し、光が透過
される。通常の印加電圧は厚さ6μmの液晶材料層の場
合で±15〜20ボルト、厚さ2μmの層で±5〜10
ボルト、厚さ12μmの層で±約30ボルトである。図
1に示したx−yマトリックス表示装置については、各
電極交差部x,yが正または負の電圧パルスによってア
ドレスされる。mとnはそれぞれx電極とy電極の数に
等しい整数である。これらのパルスが各xm,yn交差
部におい液晶材料を必要に応じて透過性または不透明に
切換える。周知の技術であるマルチプレックスアドレス
を用いて各交差部を順次アドレスする。この時のアドレ
シングは1度に交差部1つとしても良いし、1度にx行
全体に行なっても良い。従来は表示装置のフリッカーを
無くすためにx−yマトリックスを連続的にリフレッシ
ュ、すなわち再アドレスする必要があった。その理由は
従来のネマチック材料が非常に急速に弛緩してオン状態
からオフ状態に戻るためである。従来のアドレシング法
ではオンからオフへ変わる前に各交差部をリフレッシュ
する。このため、アドレスできるx−y交差部の数が厳
しく制限される。これに対して本発明方法により製造さ
れたセルは真の双安定性を有しており、セルをD1状態
またはD2状態に切換えた時、他の状態に切換えるまで
電圧を印加しなくてもセルの材料および構成により数秒
から場合によっては数時間にも亘って切換えたままの状
態を維持する。このことは、表示装置にフリッカーを生
じることなくアドレスできる交差部の数をはるかに多く
できるということを意味するものである。あるいはまた
表示装置全体をリフレッシュする代わりに変更すべき部
分のみをアドレスしても良い。本発明の方法に使用する
のに適する材料は下記の通りである。 例1 CM6=43.5%CD3(キラル成分)+56.5%
H1(Sホスト) この時、CD3=22%CC1+78%CC3。
料を用いたスメクチック液晶デバイスの製造方法に係
る。液晶装置は一般的に2つのガラス板または壁の間に
薄い液晶材料層を挟んだものから成る。両方の壁の内面
に薄い透明電極をデポジットする。このような液晶層と
壁と電極とを組合せたものを液晶セルと呼ぶことが多
い。2つの電極間に電界を印加すると、液晶分子が電界
内で回転してオン状態になる。電界を除去すると、分子
は反転してオフ状態になる。オフ状態はセルの組立て前
に壁に対して行なわれる表面処理および液晶材料の種類
によって決定されるものである。オン状態とオフ状態で
は光透過特性が異なる。デバイスによってはオン状態と
オフ状態を視覚的に区別するために1つまたはそれ以上
の偏光子および/または色素を要するものがある。大雑
把に言って液晶材料にはネマチック、コレステリック、
スメクチックの3種類の相があり、それぞれ分子の秩序
性が異なる。このような材料が液晶相を呈するのは、固
相と等方性液晶の間の限られた温度範囲だけである。液
晶相の温度範囲内で、材料はネマチック相、コレステリ
ック相、スメクチック相のうち1種またはそれ以上の相
を呈する場合があるが、通常はその動作温度範囲に亘っ
て1種類の液晶相のみ呈するものを選択する。本発明は
強誘電性スメクチック液晶材料を使用する装置の製造方
法に係る。現在、表示装置は一方の壁に電極を行状に形
成し、もう一方の壁に列状に電極を形成して構成されて
いる。これらが集まって、大型表示装置の上に個別にア
ドレス可能な素子から成るx−yマトリックスを形成す
る。このような表示装置にアドレスする方法の1つがマ
ルチプレックス方式、すなわち1行毎に装置全体のアド
レスを終わるまでアドレスして行く方法であり、表示が
必要になる度にこれを繰返す。別の種類の表示装置とし
て、オン状態とオフ状態を用いて光学シャッタを形成す
るものがある。さらに別の種類の表示装置は光学記憶装
置として使用される。これまではこのような装置にネマ
チック、コレステリックおよびスメクチック液晶材料が
使用されている。装置の多くが抱える問題の1つに、2
つの状態間での切換え速度、すなわち応答時間の問題が
ある。大抵の表示装置では応答時間を速くする必要があ
る。90度捩って構成したネマチック材料の応答時間で
普通100ミリセカンドである。スメクチック材料を含
む装置はネマチック材料やコレステリック材料を用いた
装置ほど広範囲に使用されるに至っていない。現存のス
メクチック材料を基材とする表示装置が必要な特性を備
えていないためである。しかし最近になって、切換え速
度が速く、双安定特性を有するスメクチック強誘電性が
重要視されるようになった。例えば、N.A.Clar
k並びにS.T.Lagerwall著、App.Ph
ys.Letters 36(11)1980 pp8
99−901を参照され度い。例えばSC,SI,
SF,SJ,SG,SH,等の傾斜液晶スメクチック相
にあるキラル材料が強誘電性を示すことが分かってい
る。これについては、R.B. Meyer,L.Li
ebard,L,Strzelecki,P.Kell
er著, J.de Physigue(Let
t.),36,L−69(1975)に記載されてい
る。強誘電性またはキラルスメクチック(S*)材料を
用いた装置には、セルが不均等になり継ぎ合せたような
(patchy)状態になるという欠点がある。捩れネ
マチック装置に使用するような擦過ポリイミド材料など
従来の配向層を使用した装置において特に特徴的に生じ
る問題点として、「ジグザグ」欠陥がある。この欠陥は
顕微鏡検査で見ることができ、セルがコントラストレベ
ルや観測角の異なる領域に分かれていることが解る。こ
のため、スメクチックC材料を用いた表示装置やシャッ
タの外観が容認し難い状態となるのである。本発明で
は、接触する液晶分子に大きな傾斜角(high ti
lt)を与えるセル壁面処理方法を用いることによっ
て、上記の問題点を解決する。本発明により提供される
液晶デバイスの製造方法は、電極構造を一方の面に担侍
する2つのセル壁部を設ける段階と、前記セル壁部の電
極を担侍する表面に対して表面配向処理を施す段階であ
って、該処理は配向方向と液晶材料に対する5度以上の
表面チルトとを与えることと、電極構造を担侍し表面配
向処理が施された表面がお互いに向き合うようにして、
スペーサによって一定間隔離されるように該セル壁部を
配置する段階と、キラルスメクチック相を有する液晶材
料であって、該スメクチック相より上の温度範囲におけ
るコレステリック相と、該コレステリック相の上の温度
範囲における等方相とを含有する液晶材料を用意する段
階と、該キラル液晶材料をその等方相にまで加熱する段
階と、このように加熱された材料を2つのセル壁部の間
に導入する段階と、該材料を2つのセル壁部の間に封止
する段階と、良好な配向と一様な外観を与えるべく、該
材料をそのコレステリック相から該スメクチック相まで
緩慢に冷却する段階と、少なくとも1つの偏光子を一つ
のセル壁部に隣接して、その偏光子の光学軸が液晶分子
配向方向に実質的に平行になるように配置する段階と、
液晶材料に二色性色素を添加するか、第2の偏光子をセ
ル壁部に隣接して、2つのセル壁部がこの2つの偏光子
の間におかれるようには位置する段階と、を含有する。
2つのセル壁の配向方向は同一方向または反対方向で平
行とするが、多少の変動は容認される。偏光子の間に遅
延器を組入れて色およびコントラストを最適化するこも
できる。反射器を用いて装置を反射光で観察するように
しても好い。その場合は第2偏光子の代わりに遅延器を
セルと反射器の間に設ける。キラルスメクチック材料
は、スメクチック相と等方性相の間で周囲温度以上の温
度においてコレステリック相を有する。好適には、スメ
クチック相とコレステリック相の転移温度から上0.1
℃またはそれ以上の温度範囲に亘ってコレステリックピ
ットPが層の厚さdの半分より大きくなるようにする。
材料の自発分極係数PSは少なくとも0.1nC/cm
2、好適には1nC/cm2またはそれ以上である。液
晶材料を加熱して等方性相とした後、2つの孔を介して
毛細管作用によりセル壁の間に導入してこれらの孔を実
質的に封止するか、あるいは1つの孔を介して真空充填
により導入する。液晶材料を定位置に配し終わると、こ
れを加熱してコレステリック相とし、周囲温度まで徐冷
する。この操作が良好な配向の獲得と外観を均質にする
のを促進する働きをする。一般的な冷却速度はスメクチ
ック相とコレステリック相の転移温度の±5℃の範囲内
で0.05〜2℃/分である。ほとんどの表示装置につ
いては周囲温度を0℃〜40℃とみなすことができる
が、計器類やその他の機器に装着される表示装置の周囲
温度は100℃に達する場合もある。図1,図2,図3
に示したセル1は、スペーサリング4および/または分
散スペーサによって約2〜15μmの間隔をあけて配設
した2つのガラス壁2,3を含む。透明酸化錫から成る
電極構造5,6が両壁の内面に形成されている。これら
の電極は従来の行(x)と列(y)の形状半径と角度
(r,θ)の形状または文字数字表示用の7セグメント
またはそれ以上のセグメント表示装置とすることができ
る。スメクチック液晶材料層7が壁2,3とスペーサリ
ング4の間に含まれる。偏光子8,9がセル1つの前と
後にそれぞれ配設される。直流電圧源10から制御ロジ
ック11を経て、リード線14,15により電極構造
5,6に接続されている駆動回路12,13に給電され
る。セル表示装置は透過光によって観察することができ
るが、その場合はタングステン電球16のような光源を
表示装置の後方に配設する。選択的方法として、偏光子
の後方に反射器17を配設し、反射光によって表示装置
を観察するようにしても良い。さらに、壁3と偏光子9
の間に遅延器(不図示)を配設する場合もある。電極
5,6を被覆した壁2,3は組立て前に周知の方法であ
る一酸化ケイ素の斜め蒸着により表面処理される。これ
については、例えばG.B. 1,454,296,
1,472,247, 1,470,592に記載され
ている。一酸化ケイ素の流れを基板表面に対して15度
までの角度で壁上に堆積させる。この方法を上記明細書
に記載の方法でネマチック液晶材料を用いると、液晶分
子が、均等に直線配向すると共に分子と壁の間の傾斜角
が30度となる。この整列は液晶分子を配向させる擦過
と類似しているが、擦過の場合の傾斜角は約2度であ
る。SiOの蒸着を15度までの蒸着角度と15〜30
度の蒸着角度で連続的に行なうことにより、いろいろな
分子傾斜角度を作り出すことができる。これら2つの方
向で堆積する材料の量を変えることによって傾斜角を0
〜45度の間で変化させることができる。スメクチック
材料はスメクチック相の上でピッチが長いコレステリッ
ク相を有するものが望ましい。分子26とマイクロレイ
ヤ25の両方の均一な配向を得るために、装置の用途に

極値PSが所要の値となるようにする必要がある。全て
のキラル成分がその捩れ方向とは無関係に同方向のS*
分極を有する場合がある。すなわちそれらのPSが加算
される。あるいはまた、1つまたはそれ以上のキラル成
分のPSを逆の符号のものとして、正味のPSが十分な
値となるようにすることもできる。上記材料を達成する

- 【請求項1】 液晶デバイスの製造方法であって、 電極構造を一方の面に担侍する2つのセル壁部を設ける
段階と、 前記セル壁部の電極を担侍する表面に対して表面配向処
理を施す段階であって、該処理は配向方向と液晶材料に
対する5度以上の表面チルトとを与えることと、 電極構造を担侍し表面配向処理が施された表面がお互い
に向き合うようにして、スペーサによって一定間隔離さ
れるように該セル壁部を配置する段階と、 キラルスメクチック相を有する液晶材料であって、該ス
メクチック相より上の温度範囲におけるコレステリック
相と、該コレステリック相の上の温度範囲における等方
相とを含有する液晶材料を用意する段階と、 該キラル液晶材料をその等方相にまで加熱する段階と、 このように加熱された材料を2つのセル壁部の間に導入
する段階と、 該材料を2つのセル壁部の間に封止する段階と、 良好な配向と一様な外観を与えるべく、該材料をそのコ
レステリック相から該スメクチック相まで緩慢に冷却す
る段階と、 少なくとも1つの偏光子を一つのセル壁部に隣接して、
その偏光子の光学軸が液晶分子配向方向に実質的に平行
になるように配置する段階と、 液晶材料に二色性色素を添加するか、第2の偏光子をセ

けるコレステリック相と、該コレステリック相より上の
温度範囲における等方相とを含有する液晶材料を用意す
る段階と、 該キラル液晶材料をその等方相にまで加熱する段階と、 このように加熱された材料を2つのセル壁部の間に導入
する段階と、 該材料を2つのセル壁部の間に封止する段階と、 良好な配向と一様な外観を与えるべく、該材料をそのコ
レステリック相からスメクチック相まで緩慢に冷却する
段階と、 少なくとも1つの偏光子を一つのセル壁部に隣接して、
その偏光子の光学軸が液晶分子配向方向に実質的に平行
になるように配置する段階と、 液晶材料に二色性色素を添加するか、第2の偏光子をセ
ル壁部に隣接して、2つのセル壁部がこの2つの偏光子
の間に置かれるようには位置する段階と、 を含有する方法。
