Description
【発明の詳細な説明】 〔産業上の利用分野〕 本発明は素子あるいは集積化素子間の信号伝達を容易に
かつ高速で行なう電子回路を構成した半導体装置に関す
る。

半導体装置の作製プロセスの発展に伴ない高密度で素子
を集積化することが可能となつてきた。しかしながら、
素子の高密度化は素子間の信号伝達機構を複雑化し、信
号の処理時間は、素子の演算時間よりもむしろ素子間や
装置間の信号伝達時間で規制されるようになつてきた。
そのために装置間の信号伝達に光を用いる方法が提案さ

い相互キヤパシタンスの増加や駆動電圧の低下が生じ、
信号のクロストークが問題となり、また装置間の接続配
線数の増加に伴なうクロストークなどが問題となつてい
る。

以上示したように、素子や装置の高集積化、高速化に伴
ない、集積化装置内における素子間あるいは集積化装置
間の信号伝達性能を向上させるための技術的対策が必要
となつてきた。

本発明の目的は、異なる波長を有する光を半導体装置の
信号伝達とした場合、上記異なる波長を識別する手段を
設けることにより一つの導波路で多量の信号を伝達可能
とする半導体装置を提供することにある。

素子の高集積化に伴なつて信号伝達機構が複雑になるの
は、配線数の増大と配線面積の増大による。これは、信
号伝達の手段として電子を用いていることによる。電子
を一定場所へ導くためには、ポテンシヤル勾配が必要で
あり、ある一つの信号を他の信号と区別するためには、
異なる信号を担う電子をアイソレートする必要がある。
このためには、一つの信号に対応して一つの配線が必要
であることを意味する。したがつて、信号伝達の手段と
して電子を用いる限り、信号伝達機構が複雑となるのは
避けられない。

このためには、一つの信号に対応して一つの配線が必要
であることを意味する。したがつて、信号伝達の手段と
して電子を用いる限り、信号伝達機構が複雑となるのは
避けられない。
本願発明者等は、信号の伝達手段として光を半導体電子
装置に導入することを発明した。しかし、光の場合、信
号を伝送する導波路の幅を信号の波長より小さくするこ
とが難しく、したがつて導波路の幅を電子の場合の配線
の幅より小さくすることが難しい。そこで、本願発明者
等はさらに異なる波長を有する光を半導体装置の信号伝
達の手段として用いることを発明した。この場合、その
波長を識別することにより、一つの導波路で波長の異な
る信号を伝送でき、またその信号がどこから来たかを容
易に認識することが可能であり、したがつて、導波路等
を用いて光をアイソレーシヨンする必要が全くなく、一
つの導波路で多量の信号を伝送できるという長所があ
る。すなわち、光を伝搬させる部分は、全信号共通で使
用できる。
装置に導入することを発明した。しかし、光の場合、信
号を伝送する導波路の幅を信号の波長より小さくするこ
とが難しく、したがつて導波路の幅を電子の場合の配線
の幅より小さくすることが難しい。そこで、本願発明者
等はさらに異なる波長を有する光を半導体装置の信号伝
達の手段として用いることを発明した。この場合、その
波長を識別することにより、一つの導波路で波長の異な
る信号を伝送でき、またその信号がどこから来たかを容
易に認識することが可能であり、したがつて、導波路等
を用いて光をアイソレーシヨンする必要が全くなく、一
つの導波路で多量の信号を伝送できるという長所があ
る。すなわち、光を伝搬させる部分は、全信号共通で使
用できる。
第1図は、上述の方法を実現する構成の一実施例を示し
たものである。集積化素子を形成した第1層1の下に、
光の発受信部4を形成した第2層2を形成し、つぎに平
板の透明な光伝搬部3を形成する。光の発受信部は、信
号の発受信に適した箇所に形成すればよい。光の発受信
部4は第1層に存在する集積化素子と電気的あるいは光
学的に結合しており、集積化素子からの信号を即時に光
に変えて発信し、また受信して集積化素子へ伝達する。
信号の区別が必要の時は発信部からの光の波長を変えて
行なう。たとえば、第1の発信部からは波長λAの光を
発信するようにし、第2の発信部からは波長λB(B≠λ
A)の光を発信するようにする。このようにすれば、受
信部 では、第1の発信部からの光を受けるときはλAの光を
受信すればよく、第2の発信部からの光を受けるときは
λBの光を受信すればよい。

ば伝達できる信号の情報量は飛躍的に増大することはい
うまでもない。

また、第2図に示すように、半導体装置間を光フアイバ
などの波長多重光導波路5で接続した場合も高性能な伝
導ができた。この場合、光導波路5の規模が小さくてよ
く、また波長多重発受信部4は集積化技術により集積装
置内に組みこむこともでき、小型、高性能が可能であ
る。

第1図において、第1層1にLSIを実装し、それからの
信号を各LSIに付随して第2層2に形成した発行ダイオ
ードから光信号として発するように形成した。発行ダイ
オードからの光は、石英ガラス板からなる第3層3を伝
搬する。また、各LSIに付随して、PINダイオードを形成
し、信号光を受信するようにした。なお、各LSIには、L
SIからの信号を光信号に変えるための信号を変調するIC
が具備されている。このような方法で形成した論理演算
回路は、従来の電気的配線を用いた場合より、50%程度
その大きさが小さくなつた。したがつて、本発明による
光を用いた信号伝達技術を導入した半導体装置は、従来
の電気的配線を用いた方法により、大幅に小形化できる
ことがわかる。
信号を各LSIに付随して第2層2に形成した発行ダイオ
ードから光信号として発するように形成した。発行ダイ
オードからの光は、石英ガラス板からなる第3層3を伝
搬する。また、各LSIに付随して、PINダイオードを形成
し、信号光を受信するようにした。なお、各LSIには、L
SIからの信号を光信号に変えるための信号を変調するIC
が具備されている。このような方法で形成した論理演算
回路は、従来の電気的配線を用いた場合より、50%程度
その大きさが小さくなつた。したがつて、本発明による
光を用いた信号伝達技術を導入した半導体装置は、従来
の電気的配線を用いた方法により、大幅に小形化できる
ことがわかる。

2図は2個の半導体装置間を波長多重光導波路で接続し

Claims (2)
- 【請求項1】半導体集積化電子回路における信号伝達の
一部もしくは全部を光を用いて行うことを特徴とする半
導体装置において、上記半導体集積化電子回路は、少な
くとも2つ以上の異なる波長の光を発信する発信部と、
上記異なる波長の光を伝搬させる層および/もしくは部
分と、上記異なる波長の光を識別して受信する受信部と
を具備してなることを特徴とする半導体装置。 - 【請求項2】特許請求の範囲第1項において、上記光の
発信部および受信部は、上記半導体集積化電子回路と電
気的あるいは光学的に結合していることを特徴とする半
導体装置。
