Description
本発明は、例えば、米国特許第3668106号明細
書〔オータ(Ota)、米国分類204/299、以下′
106特許と称する)に開示されている如き表示装
置用の電気泳動表示組成物に関する。 上記の如き装置においては、電気泳動的に活性
な粒子からなるコロイド状懸濁液層が2個の電極
(少なくともその1方は透明である)の間に配置
されている。その粒子は、その媒体と光学的にコ
ントラストを有するように選択されている。例え
ば、その光学的コントラストは光吸収材料に対し
て光反射性材料を使用したり、あるいは異なる色
の材料を使用することにより生じる。白色の粒子
を黒色の液体中に分散させた場合の例としては、
その懸濁液は電場を施すまでは灰色である。次
に、電場により影響された粒子は一方の電極の方
へ電気泳動的に移動し、白色の外観を与え、同時
に反対電極の相当する領域が黒色となる。′106特
許中には多数の表示セル構造体が開示されてお
り、この構造体はハウジング、2個の間隔を有す
る電極およびそれらの間に含まれている電気泳動
懸濁液からなつている。′106特許のその部分はセ
ル構造に関する図面とともに参照文献として本明
細書に包含される。 本発明が提起する問題は、上記の如きコロイド
懸濁液の安定性に関するものである。コロイド懸
濁液が不安定であることは良く知られている。凝
集に対して安定性を有する、すなわち長い使用寿
命を有する懸濁液を調製することは困難であり、
この問題は、その懸濁液を表示用に使用した場合
には、その懸濁液は分散した材料上に十分な電荷
も生じて高速の応答性を与えるものでなければな
らないという点において、更に顕著になる。通常
は、コロイドの安定性は、下記の2種の方法のい
ずれかにより達成されている。 水やアルコールの如き極性媒体においては、顔
料表面に吸着したイオン種が、粒子間の静電気的
な反発作用を生じる。その粒子上の電荷が電気泳
動活性をも生じる。脂肪族および芳香族炭化水素
およびそれらのハロゲン化誘導体の如き非極性媒
体においては、その粒子上の非イオン性ポリマー
分散剤からなる厚い吸着層が立体障害と他のエン
トロピー約フアクターを通じて安定性を与える。 電気泳動装置は低い極性の液体を利用する(こ
の場合、通常の有機酸およびその塩のイオン化
(大体10-10モル)は無視できる)ので、その粒子
の電荷は、顔料表面上に通常は電荷調節剤と称さ
れている何らかの強イオン化性、すなわち極性化
種を吸着することにより調節されないかぎり、微
量の不純物により支配されている。この量の電荷
は、電気泳動活性に対しては十分であるが、懸濁
液を静電気的に安定化するには依然として不適当
である。電荷調節剤もポリマーであり、あるいは
ポリマー分散剤が更に存在する場合は、そのコロ
イド安定性を更に確実にすることができる。 本発明の目的は、電気泳動表示器で使用するた
めのものであつて、高い電気泳動感応性も有する
安定な懸濁液を提供することである。このような
改良は、懸濁した粒子の表面に、好ましくはC8
より長い鎖を有する高フツ素化有機化合物を吸着
させることにより実現される。特定的には、高フ
ツ素化長鎖アルキルまたはアルキルアリールカル
ボン酸、スルホン酸、およびリン酸、それらのエ
ステルおよび金属塩;高フツ素化長鎖アルキルま
たはアルキルアリールアルコール;長鎖アルキル
またはアルキルアリールアルコールとエチレング
リコールまたはプロピレングリコールとの高フツ
素化A−Bブロツクコポリマー;および高フツ素
化ポリアルキルメタクリレートとそのコポリマー
が挙げられる。上記の群のイオン性材料、すなわ
ち、フツ素化酸およびその塩は、フツ素原子の強
力な負の誘導効果のために、それらの非フツ素化
相当物よりもはるかに高くイオン化性である。同
じ誘導効果により前記の群の非イオン性材料、す
なわちフツ素化エステルおよびエーテルは高い極
性のC=O結合とC−O結合を有し、この結合が
同時吸着された層のイオン化を誘導する。従つ
て、このようなフツ素化酸、金属塩、エステルお
よびエーテルは、通常の表面活性電荷調節剤であ
る非フツ素化炭化水素相当物に比して、顔料表面
により強力に吸着し、より高い表面電荷密度を与
え、且つより高い電気泳動移動性を生じる。 上記の高フツ素化高分子量有機化合物は、分散
剤として、顔料すなわち粒子表面から延びている
フツ素化鎖からなる厚い保護層を与え、大部分の
CF3基はその最外側表面にある。この層の厚さに
よつて、粒子が互にフアンデルワールズ引力範囲
内に接近するのが妨げられている。−CF3表面の
低エネルギーオートホビツク(autophobic)性
により粒子の凝集が防止されている。この点は、
非フツ素化高分子量有機化合物分散剤に対し特に
有利な点である。驚くべきことに、本発明の高フ
ツ素化高分子量有機化合物は、すぐれた分散剤で
あるのみならず、高度に有効な電荷調節剤である
ことを知見した。これらの2種の特性は電気泳動
表示装置において要求されているものである。上
述の如く、表示装置中の粒子は均一に分散して均
一な外観の表示を与えるものでなければならず、
且つ凝集に対し長い使用寿命を有するものでなけ
ればならず、さもなければ、その懸濁流体をたび
たびとり換えることが必要となる。 表示装置の別の必要条件は、一度像が形成され
たら、その像は容易に消去でき、その装置が数百
万回の像形成を受け得るものでなければならない
ことである。前記の高フツ素化高分子量有機化合
物は、おそらく電極上に吸着され電極と粒子間の
引力を低下させることにより、完全な消去を促進
するのに驚く程有効である。 要するに、表示器のコロイド懸濁液を安定化す
るために、分散した顔料を高フツ素化高分子量有
機化合物殻中にしつかりと包み込むのである。そ
の高分子量有機化合物殻は液体中に充分に延び
て、その中に含まれた顔料が互に十分に接近して
永久的に凝固するのを妨げている。このような高
フツ素化高分子量有機化合物は、それ自身電荷調
節剤として、または通常の電荷調節剤を補助する
めの好ましいマトリツクスとして作用するという
別の利点を有している。これらの高分子量有機化
合物は、また完全な消去も促進し、しかして長期
間の使用が可能となる。 本発明の高フツ素化高分子量有機化合物の有効
性を説明するために、下記の方法と装置を利用し
た。 懸濁液は、約0.2ミクロンの粒子径を有する
0.15gの微細な顔料および約0.01gのテストすべ
き分散剤および/または電荷調節剤を約5mlの液
体中にガラスビン中で超音波撹伴を約1分間使用
して分散させて調製した。 テスト装置は下記の如くして作成した。 2.54cm(1″)×7.62cm(3″)の顕微鏡スライドガ
ラスを約1000Åのクロム層で真空被覆した。その
中央に0.0254mm(1ミル)の間隙を写真製版でエ
ツチングし、2個の電極に分け、その間隙のいず
れかの側の電極をDC電圧源に連結した。 テスト方法は、上記スライドガラスの間隙上に
1滴の上記懸濁液を置き、その液滴上にカバーガ
ラスを置き、且つ圧縮して上記間隙上に約0.0508
mm(2ミル)の厚さの懸濁液を作つて行つた。
200ボルトののDC電圧を上記間隙を横断してか
け、その電気泳動による動きを6X〜100Xで顕微
鏡で観察した。 次の観察と考察が得られた。 分散品質:“劣”は顔料粒子の大きな塊り、す
なわち分剤不良を意味し;“やや良好”は0.0254
mm(3ミル)までの径の粒子の凝集を意味し;
“良好”は約10ミクロンあるいはそれ以下の一次
粒子の柔かい凝集を意味し、“優”は非常に均一
な分散、すなわち顕微鏡下50Xで個々の粒子が認
められないことを意味する。 スイツチ特性:電荷、%+および%−、間隙中
の粒子のみを対象とした。粒子電荷の極性は、十
分に明らかな電気泳動活性を有する粒子に対し測
定した。100%と(%+)+(%−)間の差を鎖状
化すなわち付着特性により求めた。応答時間は電
気泳動粒子が間隙を横断するのに要した時間であ
る。例えば0.2秒の応答時間が全く満足できるも
のであり、100ボルトで使用される。0.0508mm
(2ミル)厚の実際の電気泳動表示器における約
16ミリ秒の応答時間に相当する。 スイツチ層の均一性:Y=有、N=無、すなわ
ち、粒子が均一な層で動く。これは、均一なベタ
領域被覆を達成するために本質的なことである。 鎖状化は、望ましくない特性であり、この場合
には、その粒子は電極から電極へ鎖状の、すなわ
ち線状の粒子を形成する。この現象は電気泳動表
示装置において不均一な像形成を引起こす。 電極への付着性:予め電極上に析出させておい
た粒子が、次の逆の極性の電圧パルスによつてそ
の電極から取除くことができないことである。こ
れは電気泳動表示装置において不完全な消去を引
起す。 次の表のうち第表において非フツ素化高分子
量有機化合物分散剤とそのフツ素化対応物の比較
を示す。第表中における接尾付号“A”は非フ
ツ素化材料を意味し、一方、“B”は同一カテゴ
リーのフツ素化材料を意味し、また第表におい
ては、各種の電荷調節剤を本発明の好ましい分散
剤とともに使用した効果の比較を示している。

同時吸着された層のイオン化を誘導する。従つ
て、このようなフツ素化酸、金属塩、エステルお
よびエーテルは、通常の表面活性電荷調節剤であ
る非フツ素化炭化水素相当物に比して、顔料表面
により強力に吸着し、より高い表面電荷密度を与
え、且つより高い電気泳動移動性を生じる。 上記の高フツ素化高分子量有機化合物は、分散
剤として、顔料すなわち粒子表面から延びている
フツ素化鎖からなる厚い保護層を与え、大部分の
CF3基はその最外側表面にある。この層の厚さに
よつて、粒子が互にフアンデルワールズ引力範囲
内に接近するのが妨げられている。−CF3表面の
低エネルギーオートホビツク(autophobic)性
により粒子の凝集が防止されている。この点は、
非フツ素化高分子量有機化合物分散剤に対し特に
有利な点である。驚くべきことに、本発明の高フ
ツ素化高分子量有機化合物は、すぐれた分散剤で
あるのみならず、高度に有効な電荷調節剤である
ことを知見した。これらの2種の特性は電気泳動
表示装置において要求されているものである。上
述の如く、表示装置中の粒子は均一に分散して均
一な外観の表示を与えるものでなければならず、
且つ凝集に対し長い使用寿命を有するものでなけ
ればならず、さもなければ、その懸濁流体をたび
たびとり換えることが必要となる。 表示装置の別の必要条件は、一度像が形成され
たら、その像は容易に消去でき、その装置が数百
万回の像形成を受け得るものでなければならない
ことである。前記の高フツ素化高分子量有機化合
物は、おそらく電極上に吸着され電極と粒子間の
引力を低下させることにより、完全な消去を促進
するのに驚く程有効である。 要するに、表示器のコロイド懸濁液を安定化す
るために、分散した顔料を高フツ素化高分子量有
機化合物殻中にしつかりと包み込むのである。そ
の高分子量有機化合物殻は液体中に充分に延び
て、その中に含まれた顔料が互に十分に接近して
永久的に凝固するのを妨げている。このような高
フツ素化高分子量有機化合物は、それ自身電荷調
節剤として、または通常の電荷調節剤を補助する
めの好ましいマトリツクスとして作用するという
別の利点を有している。これらの高分子量有機化
合物は、また完全な消去も促進し、しかして長期
間の使用が可能となる。 本発明の高フツ素化高分子量有機化合物の有効
性を説明するために、下記の方法と装置を利用し
た。 懸濁液は、約0.2ミクロンの粒子径を有する
0.15gの微細な顔料および約0.01gのテストすべ
き分散剤および/または電荷調節剤を約5mlの液
体中にガラスビン中で超音波撹伴を約1分間使用
して分散させて調製した。 テスト装置は下記の如くして作成した。 2.54cm(1″)×7.62cm(3″)の顕微鏡スライドガ
ラスを約1000Åのクロム層で真空被覆した。その
中央に0.0254mm(1ミル)の間隙を写真製版でエ
ツチングし、2個の電極に分け、その間隙のいず
れかの側の電極をDC電圧源に連結した。 テスト方法は、上記スライドガラスの間隙上に
1滴の上記懸濁液を置き、その液滴上にカバーガ
ラスを置き、且つ圧縮して上記間隙上に約0.0508
mm(2ミル)の厚さの懸濁液を作つて行つた。
200ボルトののDC電圧を上記間隙を横断してか
け、その電気泳動による動きを6X〜100Xで顕微
鏡で観察した。 次の観察と考察が得られた。 分散品質:“劣”は顔料粒子の大きな塊り、す
なわち分剤不良を意味し;“やや良好”は0.0254
mm(3ミル)までの径の粒子の凝集を意味し;
“良好”は約10ミクロンあるいはそれ以下の一次
粒子の柔かい凝集を意味し、“優”は非常に均一
な分散、すなわち顕微鏡下50Xで個々の粒子が認
められないことを意味する。 スイツチ特性:電荷、%+および%−、間隙中
の粒子のみを対象とした。粒子電荷の極性は、十
分に明らかな電気泳動活性を有する粒子に対し測
定した。100%と(%+)+(%−)間の差を鎖状
化すなわち付着特性により求めた。応答時間は電
気泳動粒子が間隙を横断するのに要した時間であ
る。例えば0.2秒の応答時間が全く満足できるも
のであり、100ボルトで使用される。0.0508mm
(2ミル)厚の実際の電気泳動表示器における約
16ミリ秒の応答時間に相当する。 スイツチ層の均一性:Y=有、N=無、すなわ
ち、粒子が均一な層で動く。これは、均一なベタ
領域被覆を達成するために本質的なことである。 鎖状化は、望ましくない特性であり、この場合
には、その粒子は電極から電極へ鎖状の、すなわ
ち線状の粒子を形成する。この現象は電気泳動表
示装置において不均一な像形成を引起こす。 電極への付着性:予め電極上に析出させておい
た粒子が、次の逆の極性の電圧パルスによつてそ
の電極から取除くことができないことである。こ
れは電気泳動表示装置において不完全な消去を引
起す。 次の表のうち第表において非フツ素化高分子
量有機化合物分散剤とそのフツ素化対応物の比較
を示す。第表中における接尾付号“A”は非フ
ツ素化材料を意味し、一方、“B”は同一カテゴ
リーのフツ素化材料を意味し、また第表におい
ては、各種の電荷調節剤を本発明の好ましい分散
剤とともに使用した効果の比較を示している。

前記のテストは、低い極性の液体中で、好まし
くは電荷調節剤を高フツ素化高分子量有機化合物
分散剤と一緒に使用することにより、像の均一
性、きれいな消去性および高速性を有する装置が
得られることを示している。次の実施例はある種
の好ましい材料の使用例を示すものである。 実施例 電気泳動セルを、0.127mm(5ミル)の厚さの
マイラーが周囲にあるスペーサーにより、2個の
酸化錫で被覆したガラス電極を分離し、その被覆
した表面を互に向い合わせて作成した。このセル
中にテストすべき懸濁液を入れた。テスト電圧は
±100VAC方形波である。その懸濁液体を青色に
染色することにより、その光学的応答性が光検出
器により1個のSnO2ガラス基体を通してみたそ
の反射性の変化として測定することができる。像
の均一性と消去の完全性を肉眼と顕微鏡の両方で
観察した。 約0.05gのTi−ピユア(Pure)R−100顔料を
1mlのフレオンTF中で0.05mlのフルオラツド
(Fluorad)FC−721と混合し、且つ約1分間超
音波により撹伴処理した。この懸濁液を上記の電
気泳動セル中でテストして次の結果を得た。白と
青の像が60ミリ秒の応答時間で5Hzまでの速度で
交互に形成された。両画像とも肉眼で均一であつ
た。粒子は正に荷電していた。 実施例 顔料として50mgのデラマー・イエロー
(Delamar Yellow)を使用し、実施例の実験
を繰返した。その結果、黄色と緑色の像が5Hzま
でで交互に得られ、その像は均一であり、顔料は
正電荷で且つ応答時間は100ミリ秒であつた。 実施例 高フツ素化高分子量有機化合物として1mgのフ
ルオラツド(Fluorad)FC−176を使用し、且つ
1mlのn−ブチルベンゼンを用いて実施例の実
験を繰返した。その結果は実施例の結果と同様
であり、応答時間は2Hzで120ミリ秒であつた。 実施例 顔料として直径1ミクロンの20mgのポリスチレ
ンジビニルベンゼンビーズを使用し、実施例の
実験を繰返し、次の結果を得た。160ミリ秒の応
答時間で明るい青色と暗い青色の均一な像が2Hz
で得られた。顔料の電荷は負であつた。 実施例 50mlのTi−ピユアR−100を顔料として使用
し、且つ1mlのキシレンを液体として使用したこ
とを除いて実施例の実験を繰返した。その結果
は実施例の結果と同様であり、応答時間は
100msであつた。 実施例 高フツ素化高分子量有機化合物として3mgのフ
ルオラツドFC−432を、顔料として50mgのデラマ
ー・イエローを、且つ液体として1mlのn−ブチ
ルベンゼンを使用し、実施例の実験を繰返し
た。その結果は実施例の結果と同様であり、応
答時間は40ミリ秒であつた。 実施例 顔料として50mgのTi−ピユアR−100を使用
し、且つ液体として1mlのキシレンを使用したこ
とを除いて実施例の実験を繰返した。その結果
は実施例の結果と同様であり、応答時間は50ミ
リ秒であつた。 実施例 高フツ素化高分子量有機化合物として3mgのフ
ルオラツドFC−95を、顔料として50mgのデラマ
ー・イエローを且つ液体として1mlのn−ブチル
ベンゼンを使用し、実施例の実験を繰返した。
その結果は実施例の結果と同様であつたが、そ
の像は均一ではなかつた。 実施例 顔料がラジアント・カラーズ(Radiant
Colors)R1700−615であり、且つ液体がフレオ
ンTFであることを除いて実施例の実験を繰返
した。その結果、5Hzまでで交互に赤色と青色の
像が得られ、応答時間は60ミリ秒であつた。1Hz
以下のスイツチ速度では不完全な消去が生じた。
顔料の電荷は正であつた。 実施例 顔料が直径1ミクロンの20mgのポリスチレンジ
ビニルベンゼンビーズであることを除いて実施例
の実験を繰返した。その結果は実施例の結果
と同様であるが、顔料の電荷は正であつた。 実施例 XI 約2mgのフルオラツドFC432と約2mgのAOT
を加えたことを除いて実施例の実験を繰返し
た。その結果、20Hzまでにおいて交互に白色と青
色の像が得られ、応答時間は20ミリ秒であり、非
常に均一な像であり、きれいな消去性が得られ
た。2Hzにおいて108回以上連続的に操作しても、
像の劣化は何ら生じなかつた。 下記の表に本発明で使用した材料の商標名、供
給者、および化学名または化学構造を列記する。

分散剤と一緒に使用することにより、像の均一
性、きれいな消去性および高速性を有する装置が
得られることを示している。次の実施例はある種

リ秒であつた。 実施例 高フツ素化高分子量有機化合物として3mgのフ
ルオラツドFC−95を、顔料として50mgのデラマ
ー・イエローを且つ液体として1mlのn−ブチル
ベンゼンを使用し、実施例の実験を繰返した。
その結果は実施例の結果と同様であつたが、そ
の像は均一ではなかつた。 実施例 顔料がラジアント・カラーズ(Radiant

- 【特許請求の範囲】 1 液体中に懸濁させた粒子からなり、該粒子の
少なくとも一部分に、分散剤としての高フツ素化
高分子量有機化合物が吸着している電気泳動表示
組成物。 2 高フツ素化高分子量有機化合物分散剤が、フ
ツ素化アルキルエステルポリマーからなる特許請
求の範囲第1項に記載の組成物。 3 電荷調節剤を追含する特許請求の範囲第1項
に記載の組成物。 4 電荷調節剤が、高フツ素化高分子量有機化合
物材料からなる特許請求の範囲第3項に記載の組
成物。 5 電荷調節剤が、ジオクチルスルホコハク酸ナ
トリウムから成る特許請求の範囲第3項に記載の
組成物。
