この発明は、上記課題を解決するためになされたもので

「課題を解決するための手段」
そこで、本発明の液晶素子ては、ボン表示をなオOMI
モードの液晶素子を基本とし、この液晶素子の液晶組成
物に、該液晶組成物のみからなる液晶素子の明状態での
色相とh11色の関係にある色相を呈する二色性色素を
添加することによって、前記課題の解決を図った。

本発明の液晶素子にあっては、まず主に高情報密度化の
指標となるγ特性とコントラストが良好となるように、
基本となるOMIモードで各パラメータ(例えばリタテ
ーノヨン、液晶分子のライスト角、偏光板の配置、d/
p、材料定数等)を最適値に設定する。ここでγ特性と

本発明の液晶素子では、OMI型液晶素子をなす液晶組
成物に更に二色性色素が添加される。この二色性色素は

表示色の分光特性を考慮して、これと補色の関係にある
色相を持つものが用いられる。例えば、前述のようにO
MI型液晶素子の電界無印加部分の表示が青〜緑系であ

「作用 」
本発明の液晶素子では、ボッ表示のOMI型液晶素子を
基本とし、このOMI型液晶素子の明状態の表示色と補
色の関係にある色相を呈する二色性色素が液晶組成物に
添加されてなるものなので、第1図に示すように、OM
I型液晶素子で吸収の少なかった範囲の光が二色性色素
によって吸収される。その結果本発明の液晶素子では、
電界無印加部分の表示色が波長依存性の少ないものとな
る。
基本とし、このOMI型液晶素子の明状態の表示色と補
色の関係にある色相を呈する二色性色素が液晶組成物に
添加されてなるものなので、第1図に示すように、OM
I型液晶素子で吸収の少なかった範囲の光が二色性色素
によって吸収される。その結果本発明の液晶素子では、
電界無印加部分の表示色が波長依存性の少ないものとな
る。
しかも、本発明の液晶素子ては、前記のように補色の関
係にある色相を呈する二色性色素を添加するようにした
ので、極少量の色素を添加するたけで鮮明な白黒表示を
実現することができる。

「実施例」
(実施例1)
本発明の液晶素子を下記のように試作して、白黒表示の
品位、γ特性、コントラスト比、視角依存性を調べた。

まずインノウム・スズ酸化物(I’l”0)からなる電
極が形成された平滑度の高いカラス基板(市販のS B
E用基板)上に、ポリイミド樹脂(日産化学(株)製
5E−4110)を印刷しこれを300°Cて30分熱
処理して配向膜を形成した。つぎに液晶分子のツイスト
角が左巻き240°を勾えるように配向膜にラヒンク処
理を施した。次に一方の基板にソリ力系の球状スペーサ
を散布し、接着剤を所定パターンに印刷したあと、2枚
の基板を張り合イつせ、セル厚7μ71の液晶セルを作
成した。

組成物を調整した。なお、使用したホスト液晶AP−4
60]xxの室温における複屈折率はΔn−〇 〇85
てあった。また、調整された液晶組成物をセルに注入し
た際のΔn−dは約0595、d/pは約0.54であ
る。

次に、これらの液晶組成物を前記液晶セルにd人して、
エボキノ系の接着剤(セメタイン製、セメダインハイス
ーパ30)て封止し、ついで偏光板(に]東電工(株)

偏光板の偏光軸の角度は、偏光板を回転させながら液晶
素子がボン表示となるように、かつまた高密度情報表示
の指標であるγ値とコントラストが良好となる決定した

ことを示す。

添加する色素として、LSR−405の代イっりにLS
R−401(色相赤)を、G−233の代イっりにG−

(実施例8)
ツイスト角が180°、200°、225°、270°
、300°となるように液晶セルを作成し、それぞれに
ついて実施例1〜7と同様の実験を行ったところ、いず
れの場合も鮮明な白黒表示を実現できなかった。

このことから、ツイスト角を180° 〜300°の範

[発明の効果J
以上説明したように本発明の液晶素子は、ボッ表示のO
MI型液晶素子を基本とし、この液晶素子の液晶組成物
に、該液晶組成物のみからなる液晶素子の明状態の色相
と補色の関係にある色相を呈する二色性色素が添加され
たものなので、電界無印加部分すなわち明状態の表示色
が波長依存性の少ないものとなる。

従って、本発明の液晶素子は、基本的にポジモートの表
示を行えると共に、鮮明な白黒表示と表示の高密度化を
同時に達成できるものとなる。

従って、本発明の液晶素子は、表示か明るく、また色素
の析出する不安の無いものとなる。

Claims (1)
- 【特許請求の範囲】 1対の基板間に封入された液晶組成物のツイスト角が1
80〜300度の範囲に設定されると共に、リタデーシ
ョンが0.45〜0.7の範囲に設定され、電界印加時
に暗、無印加時に明状態を与える液晶素子であって、 前記液晶組成物に、該液晶組成物からなる液晶素子の明
状態での色相と補色の関係にある色相を呈する二色性色
素が添加されたことを特徴とする液晶素子。
