Description
最初に、本発明の実施形態の内容を列記して説明する。一実施形態に係る半導体光変調器は、マッハツェンダー型の半導体光変調器であって、基板の一辺に設けられた光入力ポートと、一辺に設けられ、光入力ポートに対して互いに対称な位置に設けられた2つの光出力ポートと、光入力ポートから入力された光を8本のアーム導波路に分岐する分岐部と、4本のアーム導波路を伝搬した光を合波して一方の光出力ポートに提供する第1合波部と、別の4本のアーム導波路を伝搬した光を合波して他方の光出力ポートに提供する第2合波部と、8本のアーム導波路それぞれに設けられた変調電極と、を備える。
本発明の実施形態に係る半導体光変調器の具体例を、以下に図面を参照しつつ説明する。なお、本発明はこれらの例示に限定されるものではなく、特許請求の範囲によって示され、特許請求の範囲と均等の意味及び範囲内でのすべての変更が含まれることが意図される。以下の説明では、図面の説明において同一の要素には同一の符号を付し、重複する説明を省略する。
Claims (5)
- マッハツェンダー型の半導体光変調器であって、
基板の一辺に設けられた光入力ポートと、
前記一辺に設けられ、前記光入力ポートに対して互いに対称な位置に設けられた2つの光出力ポートと、
前記光入力ポートから入力された光を8本のアーム導波路に分岐する分岐部と、
4本の前記アーム導波路を伝搬した光を合波して一方の前記光出力ポートに提供する第1合波部と、
別の4本の前記アーム導波路を伝搬した光を合波して他方の前記光出力ポートに提供する第2合波部と、
前記8本のアーム導波路それぞれに設けられた変調電極と、
を備え、
前記4本のアーム導波路は、前記変調電極と前記分岐部との間に、光の進行方向を前記一辺に向けて折り返す第1折返し部を有し、
前記別の4本のアーム導波路は、前記変調電極と前記分岐部との間に、光の進行方向を前記一辺に向けて折り返す第2折返し部を有し、
前記第1折返し部は、前記第2折返し部とは逆側に前記4本のアーム導波路を折り返し、
前記第1折返し部は、
前記4本のアーム導波路を前記一辺に沿った方向に曲げる第1曲折部と、
前記第1曲折部を経た前記4本のアーム導波路のうち外側の2本の前記アーム導波路を前記一辺に向かう方向に曲げる第2曲折部と、
前記第1曲折部を経た前記4本のアーム導波路のうち内側の2本の前記アーム導波路を前記一辺に向かう方向よりも大きな角度で曲げる第3曲折部と、
前記第3曲折部を経た前記内側の2本のアーム導波路を前記一辺に向かう方向に曲げる第4曲折部と、
前記第1曲折部と前記第2曲折部との間に設けられ、前記第1曲折部を経た前記外側の2本のアーム導波路のうち内側のアーム導波路を更に内側に膨らませる第5曲折部と、
を有し、
前記第1曲折部及び前記第2曲折部において、前記外側の2本のアーム導波路のうち外側の前記アーム導波路の曲率半径は、前記外側の2本のアーム導波路のうち内側の前記アーム導波路の曲率半径よりも大きく、且つ、前記外側の2本のアーム導波路の間隔は、曲げ前の部分及び曲げ後の部分と比較して狭くなっており、
前記第3曲折部において、前記内側の2本のアーム導波路のうち外側の前記アーム導波路の曲率半径は、前記内側の2本のアーム導波路のうち内側の前記アーム導波路の曲率半径よりも大きく、且つ、曲げ後の部分における前記内側の2本のアーム導波路の間隔は、曲げ前の部分における前記内側の2本のアーム導波路の間隔よりも狭くなっており、
前記第4曲折部において、前記内側の2本のアーム導波路は、互いに逆向きに曲がることにより互いの間隔を広げる部分と、その後に同じ方向に曲がる部分とを有する、半導体光変調器。 - 前記光入力ポートが前記一辺の中心に位置する、請求項1に記載の半導体光変調器。
- 前記第1折返し部における前記4本のアーム導波路の光路長が互いに等しく、
前記第2折返し部における前記別の4本のアーム導波路の光路長が互いに等しい、請求項1または請求項2に記載の半導体光変調器。 - 前記第1曲折部は前記4本のアーム導波路を90°曲げ、
前記第2曲折部は前記外側の2本のアーム導波路を更に90°曲げ、
前記第3曲折部は前記内側の2本のアーム導波路を更に180°曲げ、
前記第4曲折部は前記内側の2本のアーム導波路を更に−90°曲げる、請求項1から請求項3のいずれか1項に記載の半導体光変調器。 - 前記第1合波部から出力された光をモニタするための第1モニタポートと、
前記第2合波部から出力された光をモニタするための第2モニタポートと、を更に備え、
前記第1モニタポート及び前記第2モニタポートは、前記一辺において前記光入力ポートに対して互いに対称な位置に設けられている、請求項1から請求項4のいずれか1項に記載の半導体光変調器。
