Description
すなわち、液晶表示装置のさらなる低消費電力化が求められており、液晶表示素子の低電圧駆動を実現することが望まれている。
本実施の形態のゼロ面アンカリング液晶配向法は、平坦化処理を施した基板にポリマーブラシを形成し、この基板間に液晶を挟持した液晶セルにおいて、ポリマーブラシは、次の一般式(1)で表され、
本実施の形態の非接触液晶配向法(以下、「非接触配向法」と略す。)は、上記のゼロ面配向法を応用したものであり、ゼロ面配向法を、基板表面に形成した幾何学的凹凸構造と組み合わせることで、非接触配向技術として活用することができる。
まず、光源と検出器との間に何も置かない状態を透過率100%とし、検出器側への光の入射を遮断した状態を透過率0%とする。
続いて、LCDを光源と検出器との間に置き、電圧−透過率曲線を測定する。このとき、透過率は、0〜100%の間の数値となる。
次に、上記の方法で得られた電圧−透過率曲線の中から、最も透過率の高い値と最も低い値をそれぞれ、100%と0%として、電圧−透過率曲線を書き直す。このときの透過率が相対透過率である。
・簡便、且つ安価な方法で、非接触配向を実現できる。
・ラビングに起因する画質低下/歩留まり低下の問題を解決できる。
・光配向法のような高価な装置は不要であり、工程の簡略化、コストダウンが実現できる。
・低電圧駆動が可能であり、低消費電力化が実現できる。
Claims (1)
- 上偏光板を備えた上基板および下偏光板を備えた下基板の少なくとも一方の基板上に凹凸構造を形成し、前記上基板上、前記下基板上、および前記凹凸構造上のそれぞれにメタクリレート系モノマー、アクリレート系モノマー及びビニル系モノマーからなる群から選択されるラジカル重合性モノマーをリビングラジカル重合させてガラス転移温度Tgが−5℃以下であるポリマーブラシを形成する工程と、
クロスニコルに配置された前記上偏光板と前記下偏光板の一方の透過軸と、前記凹凸構造の長軸方向とを一致させる工程と、
前記上基板および前記下基板の間に常温において液晶を注入し、前記液晶を常温で注入した直後は液晶分子が均一に配向して、それにより、磁場または熱を加えることなく常温において前記ポリマーブラシと前記液晶との共存部にゼロ面アンカリング状態を与える工程と、
を有し、液晶の一様配向を、加熱、加圧以外の方法を用いずに、前記ゼロ面アンカリング状態と前記凹凸構造により実現するゼロ面アンカリング状態を活用した液晶表示素子の製造方法。
