Description
本願は、2014年3月26日付け出願の米国特許仮出願第61/970,804号「Global Light Compensation in a Variety of Displays」に基づく優先権を主張するものであり、この出願の開示内容の全てを本願に援用する。
本発明は、広くディスプレイ技術に関し、特に、直接照明または側面照明される照明ユニットを用いるディスプレイ技術に関する。
ライトバルブ(例えば、LCD画素またはサブ画素)を含むディスプレイパネルを照明するために使用されるバックライトは、しばしば、ライトフィールドの不均一性と色ずれを欠点に持つ。結果として、ディスプレイパネルは、望ましくない色の濃淡 (tint)を特定の領域内に含む画像を描画し得る。そのような視覚的アーチファクトが広範な種類のディスプレイに存在する一方で、不均一性や色ずれの実際のパターンは、ディスプレイに使用される異なるバックライト設計やコンポーネントに依存する。
本発明を、限定のためではなく例示を目的として、添付図面の各図により示す。これらの図において、類似の要素には同種の参照符号を付している。
グローバル光補償技術に関する実施形態例が、本明細書中に記載される。以下の説明においては、便宜上、本発明を完全に理解できるように、多数の詳細事項を説明する。ただし、これらの詳細事項抜きでも本発明を実施可能であることは明白であろう。他方、本発明の説明を不必要に不明瞭にしないように、周知の構造およびデバイスの細かな詳細までは説明しない。

本概要は、本発明の一実施形態が有するいくつかの側面につき、基本的説明を提示する。本概要は、実施形態が有する諸側面についての広範かつ網羅的な要約ではない、ということに留意すべきである。さらに留意すべきは、本概要は、実施形態が有する任意の特に重要な側面や要素を示すものとして理解されるようには意図されておらず、また、その特定の実施形態のあるいは広く本発明の何らの範囲を、規程するものとして理解されるようにも意図されていない。本概要は、単に、実施形態例に関するいくつかの概念を凝縮された簡素な形式で提示するものであって、以下に続く、諸実施形態例についてのより詳細な説明に対する単なる概念的な前置きとして理解されるべきである。
図1Aは、バックライトユニット(BLU)110、第1の光学スタック108、光再生成層106、第2の光学スタック104、カラーフィルタ層102、等を含むディスプレイシステムの構成例を例示する。画素構造を、図1Aに例示する層のうち1つ以上において実装可能である。ある実施形態例では、透過光の光強度を変調するために使用される画素構造が、対応画素(またはサブ画素)につき様々な色のフィルタを含み得るカラーフィルタ層(102)および、対応画素につき液晶ユニット構造を含み得る第2の光学スタック(104)中に埋め込まれている。
理想的には、ディスプレイパネルが有する複数画素中の各画素は、同一構成の光色組合わせ(例えば、BT.709のような規格や仕様に定義された白点を生成する、等の)を含む一定の光を用いて、照明される。ところが、たとえ照明を生成するために均質な材料やコンポーネントを用いたとしても、照明の均一性は達成が難しい。例えば、QDシートのような光再生成層(例えば、106等)をバックライトユニット(例えば、110、110―1、110―2等)の一部として、あるいはそれと併せて使用する場合、光再生成層(106)の異なる空間位置における光の生成/変換は、様々であり得る。
いくつかの実施形態では、照明補償パターンは、不均一照明パターンに基づいて決定または生成可能である。ある例では、ある特定の白点や特定の色域を基準にした、空間的に変化する偏りまたは不均一性は、変換行列(例えば、その特定の白点を定義するCIE X,Y,Z値から、またはその特定の色域を定義するRGB値から等の変換をそれぞれ表現する、複数の3×3行列等)によって表現し得る。その変換行列が表現する偏りや不均一性を打ち消す逆変換行列を、その変換行列の逆行列として、計算し得る。この逆変換行列は、空間的に変化する偏りまたは不均一性を相殺するためにディスプレイ装置中で実施される必要がある照明補償パターンを表現するために用い得る。
ディスプレイ装置における照明補償パターンは、様々な照明補償技術のうち1つ以上を使用して、実装可能である。光補償技術の例には、以下のいずれかが含まれ得るが、それらに限定はされない。すなわち、均質な光再生成層を空間的に不均一な(または不均質な)光再生成層で置換すること、空間的に不均一な光再生成層を追加すること、空間的に一定なパターンを有するカラーフィルタ層を空間的に不均一なパターンを有するカラーフィルタ層で置換すること、空間的に不均一なパターンを有するカラーフィルタ層を追加すること、均質な光を放出するBLUを空間的に不均一な(または不均質な)光を放出するBLUで置換すること、ディスプレイパネルの特定空間領域内における1つ以上の弱いあるいは不飽和な色を補う発光素子を追加すること、1つ以上の光変調層の光変調を光補償ロジックで強化すること、光補償ロジックにより変調される光変調層を追加すること、等である。
1つ以上の光補償層(例えば、フィルム、シート等)が、ディスプレイ装置の光学構成において使用され得る。図4Aは、BLU 110、第1の光学スタック108、光補償層402―A、光再生成層106、第2の光学スタック104、カラーフィルタ層102、等を備えるディスプレイ装置構成例を、例示する。光補償層402―Aは、光再生成層(106)の他に加えられる追加的な光再生成層であってもよく、図3BのLCD画素データ断面(314)が生成するものと同様の照明補償パターンを生成するように構成され得る。光補償層(402―A)により表現されるこの追加的な光再生成層は、量子ドットなどのような1つ以上のタイプの光再生成材料を、1つ以上の特定の空間的不均一分布パターン(ディスプレイパネルのいくつかの空間領域内に補償的な色光を生成するように構成される)で含むことが可能である。追加的、選択的、または代替的に、光補償層(402―A)の代わりに、またはそれと併せて、量子ドットなどのような1つ以上のタイプの光再生成材料を1つ以上の空間的に不均一な特定分布パターン(ディスプレイパネルのいくつかの空間領域内における或る色光の弱さを補う照明を生成するように構成される)で有する光再生成層で、光再生成層(106)を置換できる。
図5は、工程フロー例を例示する。いくつかの実施形態では、当工程フローは、1つ以上の計算装置またはユニットにより実行される。ブロック502では、照明補償システム(例えば、照明補償を実装するディスプレイ装置、あるディスプレイ装置のクラスにおける照明補償を実装するディスプレイ装置設計システム等)が、ディスプレイ装置が有するディスプレイパネルの不均一照明パターンを判定する。この不均一照明パターンは、ディスプレイパネルが有する第1の空間領域内における1つ以上の照明特性についての第1の値群と、ディスプレイパネルが有する第2の別空間領域内における1つ以上の照明特性についての第2の別値群とを含む。ディスプレイパネルは、第1の空間領域および第2の空間領域を含む、複数の空間領域を有する。
一実施形態によれば、本明細書に説明されている技術は、1つ以上の専用の計算装置により実施される。専用の計算装置は、技術を実行するようハードワイヤードで接続され得るか、または、技術を実行するよう持続的にプログラムされた1つ以上の特定用途向け集積回路(ASIC)またはフィールドプログラマブルゲートアレイ(FPGA)のようなデジタル電子デバイスを含み得るか、または、ファームウェア、メモリ、その他の格納装置、または何らかの組み合わせにおけるプログラム指令に従って技術を実行するようプログラムされた、1つ以上の汎用のハードウェアプロセッサを含み得る。そのような専用の計算装置はまた、カスタムハードワイヤード論理、ASIC,またはFPGAとカスタムプログラミングとを組み合わせることにより、技術を達成し得る。専用の計算装置は、デスクトップコンピュータシステム、ポータブルコンピュータシステム、携帯用のデバイス、ネットワーキングデバイス、またはハードワイヤードおよび/またはプログラム論理を組み込むことにより技術を実施する、任意の他のデバイスであり得る。

Claims (5)
- ディスプレイ装置が有するディスプレイパネルの不均一照明パターンを判定する工程であって、前記不均一照明パターンは、前記ディスプレイパネルが有する第1の空間領域の或る照明特性についての第1の値群と、前記ディスプレイパネルが有する第2の別空間領域の前記と同じ照明特性についての第2の別値群と、を含み、前記ディスプレイパネルは、前記第1の空間領域および前記第2の空間領域を含む複数の空間領域を有し、前記不均一照明パターンは、ある特定の白点および/または或る特定の色域からの偏りに関するものでありかつ変換行列または変換関数により表現される、工程と、
少なくとも部分的に前記不均一照明パターンに基づき、照明補償パターンを生成する工程であって、前記照明補償パターンは、前記第1の空間領域および前記第2の空間領域を含む前記複数の空間領域における前記照明特性の値群を均質化するように構成され、前記照明特性は或る原色光色の輝度レベルを表す、工程と、
前記ディスプレイ装置の1つ以上の光変調層を用いて前記照明補償パターンを実施する工程と、
を含み、
前記ディスプレイ装置は、均質な第1の量子ドット(QD)層と第2の量子ドット層とを有し、前記第1の量子ドット層は第1の不均一照明パターンを生成し、前記第2の量子ドット層は、前記第1の不均一照明パターンを低減する第2の不均一照明パターンを生成し、前記不均一照明パターンは、少なくとも部分的に前記第1の量子ドット層により生成され、
前記1つ以上の光変調層内のライトバルブは、前記照明補償パターンを実装するアルゴリズム的な補償から導出される駆動値を用いて制御され、
前記照明補償パターンは、前記不均一照明パターンを打ち消すための逆変換行列または逆変換関数を含む、方法。 - 請求項1に記載の方法を遂行するように構成されたディスプレイ装置。
- プロセッサを備え、かつ、請求項1に記載の方法を実行するように構成された、装置。
- 1つ以上のプロセッサにより実行されるとき請求項1に記載の方法の実行を引き起こすソフトウェア指令を格納する、非一時的コンピュータ可読記憶媒体。
- 1つ以上のプロセッサと、1つ以上の記憶媒体であって、前記1つ以上のプロセッサにより実行されるとき請求項1に記載の方法の実行を引き起こす1組の指令を格納する媒体と、を備える計算装置。
