によって求められ、ここでνgは群速度であり、フィードバックラインまたはキャビティの長さがLである。結果として、フィードバックは、それ自体で1回の掃引の範囲内ではなく、2回の掃引の範囲内である。キャビティ内のフィードバック遅延ラインは、標準的な周波数掃引発生源と異なり、完全掃引の全周波数を「記憶」する。
フーリエドメインモードロッキング(FDML)レーザの時間経過における安定かつ最適な動作を保証するために、同調可能フィルタ要素の動作を制御する電子信号への周期的または連続的な調整を行うことが必要となる場合がある。これらの制御信号調整により、広範囲の時間尺度において発生する可能性のある、環境変化や構成部品特性におけるドリフトを補償することができる。例えば、同調可能フィルタ要素としてファブリペローフィルタが使用される場合には、調整を必要とする制御信号としては、AC駆動電圧およびDC電圧オフセットが挙げられる。図1は、共振周波数同調を使用するFDML動作に好適なシステム10を説明している。
図2は、「フィードバック技法」と呼ぶことができる第1のクラスの最適化技法を使用する制御システム20を示す。この制御システム20には、2006年1月20日に出願され、現在は米国特許第7414779号となっている米国特許出願第11/337105号、および2008年7月28日に出願され、本出願がそれに対して部分係属となっている、米国特許出願第12/220898号に記載されたFDMLキャビティと類似のFDMLレーザキャビティ21を含めてもよい。レーザ性能の特性を記述するために、レーザ出力23をレーザキャビティ21から結合してもよい。レーザ出力は、周期的に波長掃引される光場の形態とすることができる。レーザ出力23は、光測定装置25に誘導される。光測定装置25は、光ダイオードまたは、光検出用として当該技術において知られているその他任意の装置とすることができる。光測定装置25は、測定パラメータ27を特定するために、レーザ出力23を解析するように構成してもよい。
図4は、「再生式技法」と呼ぶことができる、第2のクラスの最適化技法を使用する別の制御システム40を説明している。制御システム40には、FDMLレーザキャビティ21を含めてもよく、そこでは、レーザ出力23がキャビティ21から出るように連結されて、光測定装置25に入力される。光測定装置25は、電子処理ユニット41に直接適用することができる測定パラメータ27をもたらすことができる。
FDMLレーザの同調可能フィルタ要素および利得媒体は、同調可能フィルタ要素および利得媒体の具体的なタイプに応じて、様々な波形で駆動することができる。例えば、ファブリペローフィルタが同調可能フィルタ要素として使用される場合に、使用することができる1つのタイプの波形は、追加のDC電圧オフセットを含むAC正弦電圧波である。利得媒体が半導体光学増幅器(SOA)である場合には、DC電流を駆動波形として使用してもよい。なお、その他のタイプの駆動波形をこれらの要素に適用することも可能である。さらに、FDMLレーザ性能を改善するために、波形または波形の変調を選んでもよい。
FDMLレーザのいくつかの実施態様の望ましくない特性の1つは、双方向波長掃引である。双方向掃引は、同調可能フィルタ要素の動作のモードの結果である。例えば、同調可能フィルタ要素がファイバファブリペロー(FFP)フィルタである場合に、フィルタ内のファイバは、それが同調されるときに、物理的に前方および後方に移動する。結果的に、レーザは、方向が短波長から長波長(「前方掃引」)へ、続いて長波長から短波長(「後方掃引」)の方向に交番する波長掃引を生成する。FDMLレーザの掃引周波数が増大されると、一方の掃引方向の性能が、他方の掃引方向に対して低下する。このことは、以前から知られている従来型掃引波長レーザ発生源についても当てはまる。すなわち、低下を防止するために、例示的実施形態においては、一方向波長掃引を使用してもよい。
FDMLレーザの一部の実施形態の第2の望ましくない特性は、レーザ出力の瞬間光周波数と時間との間の非線形関係である。例えば、ファブリペローフィルタが同調可能フィルタ要素として使用され、DC電圧オフセットを有する正弦波が駆動信号として使用される場合には、結果として生じる周波数掃引もまた、正弦関数である。多くの応用において、非線形周波数掃引の結果として、追加の信号処理の必要性や性能劣化が生じる。このことは、異なる光周波数がレーザ出力において異なる量の時間だけ、存在するために起きるものであり、これはレーザ出力の時間分解測定を混乱させる可能性がある。デジタルサンプリング時間が各波長に不均一に割り当てられるので、データ収集も悪影響を受ける。
FDMLレーザの一部の実施形態の第3の望ましくない特性は、色分散(chromatic dispersion)の影響による性能低下である。これらの影響としては、帯域幅減少、ノイズ増加および平均出力パワー低下が挙げられる。FDMLレーザキャビティにおける色分散の主要な影響は、異なる波長成分を異なる速度で伝播させることである。例えば、1060nm波長領域において、コーニング(Corning)HI−1060などの、標準のシングルモード光ファイバがキャビティ内で使用される場合には、短い波長が、長い波長よりもより低速で伝播する。したがって、正弦波などの単純な駆動波形を使用して、同調可能フィルタ要素の掃引時間を、レーザ内で活性な全波長の伝播時間に同期させることはできない。色分散の望ましくない影響は、FDMLレーザキャビティの長さが大きくなるほど、あるいはレーザの動作波長が、標準光ファイバにおける1310nmのゼロ分散点から遠ざかるほど悪化する。800nm、1060nmおよび1550nm付近の領域などの1310nmから大幅に離れた波長でFDMLレーザを動作させることが望ましいことが多いので、色分散の制限を克服するための技法を提供することが必要である。
FDMLレーザは、その偏光特性について、非常に特異で普通ではない挙動を示す。偏光管理の主要な問題が、熱ドリフト効果、音響振動および光学構成要素(ファイバ)内で変化する応力である、連続波(cw)(ファイバ)レーザまたはパルス式(ファイバ)レーザにおける場合とは異なり、FDMLレーザでは、波長に依存する偏光状態の固有の反復可能な変化が観測される。そのために、全出力偏光が時間と共に変化する標準的レーザの場合と異なり、FDMLでは、波長または周波数が掃引されるときに、(通常、わずかな時間的なドリフトを含み)出力偏光が変化する。この効果を、本明細書においては、偏光色度と呼ぶ。偏光色度は、遅延を経て伝播した後の偏光構成要素間の高次遅延の特有の結合、および長い瞬間コヒーレンス長の効果によって引き起こされる可能性がある。cw(ファイバ)レーザ(モノクロマティックまたは掃引)またはパルス式ファイバレーザなどの、標準的レーザにおいては、波長板、ファイバスクィーザ(fiber squeezer)、ファラデー素子、その他などの既知のデバイスを使用してこれらの偏光効果を管理することができる。しかしながら、FDMLレーザにおいて、直交偏光状態の高次遅延の特有の効果、偏光色度のために、前記効果を管理するには異なる方法および装置が必要となる場合がある。
上述のように、ほとんどの既知の(ファイバ)レーザ偏光問題は、温度変動、変化するファイバ内の応力および複屈折性、または音響信号、その他によるランダム偏光変動に限定されている。ほとんどの場合に、スペクトルの広いレーザ(例えば、短パルスレーザ)のすべての波長成分は、同様に影響を受ける。しかしながら、FDMLレーザにおいては、異なった、そして非常に異常な挙動が観測される。ファイバを通過して伝播した後に、偏光状態は、周期的、波長依存性の再生可能な変調を示す。この特有の偏光効果、偏光色度、はファイバ遅延における「色偏光モード分散(chromatic polarization mode dispersion)」(色PMD)と記述してもよい効果によって、最も引き起こされやすい。この効果は、FDMLレーザに特有のものであり、その理由は、これらのレーザが長いキャビティ内ファイバループを使用し、同時に出力波長成分の広いスペクトル領域があるためである。スペクトルの広いパルス式ファイバレーザは、通常、キャビティ内に数キロメートル長さの非常に長いファイバを有することはない。標準的なPMDは周知であるのに対して、「色PMD」または偏光色度の狭帯域同調可能レーザに対する影響は、FDMLレーザに特有のものである。
規定された偏光出力を提供する第1のクラスの方法は、偏光制御の能動的方法に関係する。図13は、この方法のステップを利用する制御システム130の略図である。この制御システム130は、FDMLレーザキャビティ21を特徴とする。FDMLレーザキャビティ21にはさらに、通常、電子信号によって時間の経過と共に調整可能である、キャビティ内またはキャビティ外の偏光制御器(PC)131を組み入れてもよい。この制御器は、それに限定はされないが、PZT式ファイバスクィーザ、2つの直交偏光状態の間に1/2または1/4波遅延を導入するモータ式ファイバループパドル(motorized fiber loop paddle)、または電気光学式偏光制御器とすることもできる。一般に、PCは、入力光場の偏光状態の変更可能な回転または変化を導入することができる任意の装置とすることができる。
サンプリング内制御体系において、偏光制御がその上で動作する時間スケールは、PC制御回路が偏光状態の実質的な変化をその上で発生させることができる時間スケールを意味し、FDMLレーザを使用する測定システムの1サンプリング間隔または逆検出帯域幅よりも短い。そのような動作モードは、準偏光解消光(quasi depolarized light)を発生させるために使用してもよく、PCは非常に速くなくてはならない。
掃引内制御体系において、偏光制御が動作する時間スケールは、PC制御回路が偏光状態の実質的な変化を発生させることができる時間スケールを意味し、FDMLレーザを使用する測定システムの1サンプリング間隔または逆検出帯域幅よりも長いが、掃引持続時間よりも短い。この方法は、1掃引の波長または周波数の関数としての偏光状態における変動を意味する、FDMLレーザに典型的な「偏光色度」を補償するために使用することができる。
掃引間制御体系において、偏光制御が動作する時間スケールは、PC制御回路が偏光状態の実質的な変化を発生させることができる時間スケールを意味し、FDMLレーザを使用する測定システムの1サンプリング間隔または逆検出帯域幅よりも長く、掃引自体には作用しないが、次の掃引に作用する。PCの帯域幅は、「掃引内方法」の場合における帯域幅と同等であるが、回路内の遅延によって、1回の掃引からの偏光解析器からの信号が、次回またはその後の掃引のためのPCに対して作用させることが可能になる。フィードバックは、掃引間ではなく、1回の掃引と後の掃引との間である。
長期制御体系において、偏光制御が動作する時間スケールは、PC制御回路が偏光状態の実質的な変化を発生させることができる時間スケールを意味し、1掃引周期よりも長い。そのようなシステムは、長期間の熱ドリフト効果を補償しなくてはならない場合に使用されることになる。通常、制御器は、多数の掃引の平均化された信号に対して作用し、偏光回転の程度をゆっくりと調整する。
規定の偏光出力を提供するための第2のクラスの方法は、偏光制御の受動的に方法に関する。レーザにおける光学構成要素の専用の選択、設計およびネットワークが、所望の効果を達成するために使用される。以下の方法は、FDMLレーザの特有の偏光問題である偏光色度を最小化するために使用される。FDMLレーザは、短い瞬間コヒーレンス長を有する、短パルスレーザではなく、また単色のcwレーザでもないので、偏光管理の対策は標準の偏光管理方法とは異なる。偏光解消器などの偏光依存性の光学構成要素が、cw光と、または広帯域光源と使用されることはよく知られている。以下の方法は、受動装置を用いて、または特別に設計された方法で、偏光を管理するのに適切であり、使用される。
偏光色度を最小化する方法の第1のクラスが、図14(A)〜14(C)に示されている。3つの事例的システム130、131および132が示されている。専用キャビティ設計によって、偏光色度が低減される。キャビティ設計は、少なくとも1つの利得媒体(GAIN)5’、少なくとも1つの光学フィルタ(FIL)6’、任意選択のアイソレータ(ISO)133または光サーキュレータ(CIR)134、任意選択の偏光制御器(PC)135、ビームスプリッタ/カプラ要素(CP)136、遅延要素(D)137、任意選択のファラデーミラーFRMまたは波長板(WP)138を組み入れる。
偏光色度を最小化する第2のクラスの方法および設計は、遅延(DL)としてのファイバスプールの場合に、遅延部分における偏光効果を低減するものである。以下において考察する設計は、ファイバスプールにおける偏光色度を低減するか、またはそれを補償して相殺する方法のいずれかである。
光学要素は、キャビティ遅延に入る前の、波長非依存の光の偏光状態を準備するのに使用することができる。例示的状態としては、線形でスプールの低速軸に平行、線形でスプールの高速軸に平行または円形が挙げられる。偏光制御器の色度を低減するために、大容量(bulk)光偏光器を使用することができる。
用途に応じて、キャビティの内部または外部の追加の光学要素によって、FDMLレーザの性能を改善することができる。
特殊なクラスの要素がマッハツェンダー干渉計(MZI)である。1×2カプラの他にその他の形態のカプラを使用してMZIを構築してもよく、実際に以下に記述するすべての方法は、1×nカプラに拡張できるものと理解されたい。MZIは、図17に描かれているようにFDMLキャビティの内部で使用することができる。なお、この点において、記述の特徴、設計および方法はまた、光場を有限の数の光路に分割し、それらを再び再結合するその他任意のタイプの干渉計によっても達成できることに留意されたい。通常、主たる概念は、2つの異なる光学要素をMZIの2つのブランチ/アームに挿入するか、または規定された方法で長さを調整して、所望の性能改善を達成することである。例えば、パワー性能を増大させるために、同一の要素を挿入することも行うことができる。
MZIの2つのアーム長(光場(A)(1)および(A)(2)によって表わされる)が、1波長のオーダーまたはそれよりも小さい長さまでマッチングされている。この体系において、MZIは、掃引範囲にわたって、顕著なスペクトル伝達特性を有していない。2つの光場は、コヒーレントに結合されて、光場(A)(3)が生じる。この動作体系において、アーム長を、1波長よりも精度のよい値まで安定化させることは、意図的な平均化が望ましくない場合には、非常に重要である。通常、光場の意図的な平均化が望まれない限り、過剰なファイバ長は使用することができない。この体系は、利得要素を多重化するには理想的であり得る。この場合には、各アームは、別個の利得要素を有することになる。アームは、異なる利得波長を有して、掃引範囲を広げることもできる。
MZIの2つのアーム長には、光場(B)(1)および(B)(2)によって説明されるように、1波長よりも大きいが、瞬間コヒーレンス長よりも小さい、意図的なミスマッチがある。この体系において、MZIは、掃引範囲にわたって顕著なスペクトル伝達特性を有する。2つの光場は、光場(B)(3)によって示されるように、コヒーレントに結合されるが、強い変調が観測される。光コヒーレンス断層撮影法(OCT)応用においては、これによって、画像化範囲内でエコーを生成する。この動作体系におけるコヒーレント加算が理由で、意図的な平均化が望まれないのであれば、アーム長を1波長よりも精度のよい値まで安定化させることが重要である。通常、光場の意図的な平均化が望まれない限り、過剰なファイバ長はどちらのアームでも使用することができない。
MZIの2つのアーム長には、光場(C)(1)および(C)(2)によって説明されているように、レーザの瞬間コヒーレンス長よりも大きい意図的なミスマッチがある。この体系において、2つの波形は非コヒーレントに加算されて、光場(C)(3)が生じているので、MZIは、掃引範囲にわたってスペクトル伝達特性を有さず、2つのアームは、MZIの第2のカプラの中に連結された、独立の発生源のように作用する。
(a)先の段落で述べたように、2つのアームは、2つの独立した偏光制御ユニット(PC)を有して、干渉縞コントラストを低減して、偏光色度に起因するスペクトル変調を出力することができる(図17)。通常、これは、スペクトル変調を避けるために、サブ波長ミスマッチ体系(i)または非コヒーレント大ミスマッチ体系(iii)において実行されることになる。しかしながら、コヒーレンス長ミスマッチ体系(ii)において、干渉縞および変調を厳密に打ち消す値に、ミスマッチを設定することも可能である。
一連のファイバブラッグ格子を使用して、キャビティ分散を補償すると共に、異なる波長成分に対して往復時間をマッチングさせることができる。図16Aにおけるのと類似の設定を使用してもよいが、追加の本数のファイバまたは偏光要素を各FBG間に、必ずしも含める必要はない。図16Aに示す設定において、および正常分散体系(例えば、1050nm波長領域)におけるFDML動作の場合に、サーキュレータ/キャビティに近いFBGは、短い波長成分を反射することになる。リング/サーキュレータからさらに遠くのFBGは、長い波長成分を反射することになる。なお、FDMLレーザの全波長領域をカバーする1つのチャープトFBG(チャープトFBGは連続的に変化する周期を有する)を使用できること、またはいくつかのチャープトFBGまたは非チャープトFBGを一連にして使用することができることを指摘したい。FDMLレーザにおいて、短パルスレーザとは異なり、FBGは必ずしも位相マッチングさせる必要がないことを注記しておくのは重要である。
特定の波長を選択し、それらをキャビティを通過する異なる光路を再経由させるために、光スイッチを使用することができる。これは、異なる光路長を有する分散補償方式を適用するため、または特定の波長を取り上げ、それらをキャビティの外に連結するのに、使用することができる。次いで、ここでも、光キャビティ長をl、光の速度をc、追加のファイバの光周波数帯域をbとした場合に、l<c/bを条件として、追加の外部ファブリペローまたはその他の共振器を使用して連続波(cw)出力を提供することができる。
FDMLレーザは、その動作において、わずかに不連続な同調特性またはモードホップを有することができる。不連続動作またはモードホッピング動作においては、出力光は、1つの周波数において有限時間、留まり、次いで急速に変化する。これは、出力光の周波数が円滑かつ連続的に変化する連続同調と対照的である。FDMLレーザのスペクトル出力の観点で、不連続動作によって、非常に狭いスペクトル線が生じ、これは時折、急激にジャンプする。このことは、特定の波長値が出力スペクトルから失われたり、予測不能な時点に発生したりするので、波長解像測定用途に対しては問題となり得る。キャビティの内部または外部の位相変調器は、スペクトル線幅を広げるのに使用することができる。位相変調器は、所望の効果を得るために、レーザの瞬間光帯域幅のオーダーの電子周波数によって駆動すべきである。なお、線幅の拡張はまた、振幅変調器によっても達成できることを理解されたい。
多くの応用において、FDMLレーザを掃引モードで動作させることは便益があり、そのようなモードでは、発生する掃引波形は、一連の離散的光周波数を含むか、または連続的に段階状になった波長を含む。離散的な段階的同調は、光コヒーレンス断層撮影法、分光分析、および計測学などの多くの用途に対して便益があり得る。離散的段階を有する掃引同調は、より狭い瞬間レーザ線幅、改善されたコヒーレンス特性および改善されたノイズをもたらす場合がある。これらの特性は、掃引発生源光コヒーレンス断層撮影法および干渉計応用における画像化性能を改善することができる。一連の離散的周波数または波長段階の発生はまた、レーザ出力を測定することおよびレーザパラメータの制御を改善することにも有利である。
(i)BWFDML<FSRAuxiliary:この動作体系は図23に示されており、図20に示すような出力を有する。この構成は、一連の隔離された周波数段階を含むFDMLレーザ出力を得ることが望ましいときに使用される。このレーザは、補助フィルタの透過極大周波数の範囲にわたって段階状に掃引し、ある光周波数においてレーザ出力を時間tSTEP−ONの間、発生し、この時間中、同調可能FDMLフィルタ極大VFDMLが補助フィルタの透過極大と重畳する。この出力の後に時間tOFFが続き、このときには、レーザ出力強度が実質的に減少して、ゼロ強度に達する場合があり、同調可能FDMLフィルタ透過極大周波数VFDMLが補助フィルタの2つの透過極大周波数の間にある場合に起こる。その後に、FDMLフィルタが掃引を続けるにつれて、レーザは、補助フィルタの次の透過極大周波数において、新しい光周波数に切り換わる。
レーザキャビティの内部の単一の同調可能フィルタを使用することによって、FDMLレーザの段階的同調を達成することができる。これは、システム内の構成要素の数を低減し、それによって複雑度を低減するので、望ましいことがある。単一の同調可能フィルタを使用すると、任意に指定可能な光周波数を出力するFDMLレーザを構築することもできる。このことは、FDMLレーザ出力の柔軟性を向上させるので望ましい。段階的同調および任意に指定可能な光周波数を得るために、同調可能フィルタは、2つの特性を有さなければならない。第1に、光を1つまたは複数の離散的な狭い帯域へとフィルタリングすべきであり、その場合に、離散的狭帯域の中心周波数を、FDML動作を可能にする周期的な方法で、時間の経過と共に同調させることが可能である。第2に、離散的な狭帯域の中心周波数は、任意の離散的設定点に設定できなければならない。
FDMLフィルタとしてバーニア効果(Vernier effect)を使用する同調可能フィルタを組み入れることによって、段階的同調FDML出力を実現することも可能である。そのようなバーニア同調可能フィルタには、静的ファブリペローフィルタおよび実質的に同等の帯域幅およびわずかに異なる自由スペクトル領域を有する同調可能ファブリペローフィルタを含めることができる。同調可能ファブリペローフィルタが同調されている間に、透過極大の異なる対が重複して、段階的同調挙動を起こさせる。FDML動作に対して、同調可能ファブリペローフィルタは、キャビティの往復時間に同期して同調されることになる。ここで、複数の透過極大を生成する、その他任意のタイプの光学フィルタを、ファブリペローフィルタの代わりに使用できることを理解されたい。また、静止ファブリペローフィルタおよび同調可能ファブリペローフィルタの組合せは、1つの段階的同調フィルタとして、または1つのバーニア同調可能フィルタとして考えられることも理解されたい。
以前から知られている従来型波長掃引レーザと比較して、FDMLレーザの性能が改善されたことにより、以前には可能ではなかった新規の測定システムが提供される。FDMLレーザの利点は、第1に、掃引速度が劇的に増大したこと、振幅ノイズが劇的に減少したこと、および位相ノイズが劇的に減少したことに関する。したがって、以前には達成不能な速度と感度で、振幅方式測定および位相方式測定を行うことができる。FDMLレーザが以前から知られていた測定システムに組み込まれると、測定システムは、以前には不可能であった測定を実施することができるようになる。
