Description
いわゆる相ガイドの安定性とは、液体/空気界面がそれを越えるために必要とされる圧力のことである。高度親水系における前進液体/空気界面にとって、水平面における相ガイドとチャネル壁面との接触角はその安定性に決定的な役割を果たす。

同様な設計規則は相ガイドの形状にも当てはまる。相ガイド(2Dまたは3D)が前進液体メニスカスに対向する点で鋭角をなす場合には(相ガイドの平面図を示す図3(a)を参照のこと)、この点でオーバフローが直接生ずる可能性が高い。臨界角はまたも以下の通りである。

両側でチャンバまたはチャンバ壁面と接する相ガイドを前提として、図4には、第1と第2の壁面104,106との間に一方で大きな接触角α1、他方で小さな接触角α2を有する相ガイド100につき、前進液面の相ガイド越えが示されている。相ガイドは小さいほうの角度部で越えられる。チャネル壁面との間に形成される接触角が両側で同じであれば、高度親水系における前進液体相につきオーバフローがどこで生ずるかは予測不能である。そうではなく、上記2つの接触角のうちの一方が他方よりも小さければ、相ガイド−壁面接触角が小さいほうの側でオーバフローが生ずると予測することができる。
相ガイドに沿った一定の点でオーバフローの制御が達成されるべき場合には、本発明により、いずれの相ガイド−壁面角度よりも小さい角度α3を有する点に屈曲部が導入される。図5は相ガイドに沿った選択された点でオーバフローを惹起させる3種のストラテジーを平面図で示したものである。これら3種のストラテジーとは−(a)鋭角の屈曲部、
(b)鋭角を有した枝分かれ相ガイド108、(c)鋭角を具えたオーバフロー構造−によるものである。いずれの場合にも、角度α3は相ガイド−壁面角度α1およびα2よりも小さくなければならない。
相ガイドは、相ガイドを援用しない限り湿潤しないままであると考えられる死角を充填するのに不可欠のツールである。液体チャンバのジオメトリは、相ガイドがなければ空気が死角に捕獲されるものとする。死角の最奥の隅から発する相ガイドは、前進相が相ガイドを越える前に相ガイドの全長に沿って整列されるようにしてこの問題を解決する。
本発明の趣旨において、いわゆる閉じ込め式相ガイド116は大型チャネルまたはチャンバ内に一定量の液体体積102を閉じ込める。これは、得られる液体体積に応じて、液体/空気境界の形状を決定する。図7は、単一の相ガイドによるか(図7(a)を参照のこと)または多重相ガイド(図7(b)を参照のこと)による体積閉じ込めの2つの例を示している。相ガイドの形状は必ずしも直線状である必要はなく、任意の形状を有していてよい。
死角の充填を支援する相ガイドならびに閉じ込め式相ガイドは、必須相ガイドの代表例である。これは、それらがなければ、デバイスのマイクロ流体機能が阻害されることを意味している。これらの必須相ガイドに加えて、支援相ガイドを使用することができよう。これらの相ガイドは、所要の方向への液体/空気メニスカスの前進を徐々に操作する。これらの支援相ガイドにより、液体/空気メニスカスは必須相ガイドのみによる場合と同様に、より連続的にコントロールされるため、系の信頼度は向上する。これは、小さな操作ステップが実施されるにすぎないために、相ガイド接触面における超過圧力の発生を防止する。超過圧力は液体がエネルギー的に不利な形で操作される場合に発生し得ると言えよう。支援相ガイドの使用例は図8に示されている。この場合、図7(b)の構造に−最終的に閉じ込められる形状へと液体102を徐々に操作すべく−付加的に支援相ガイド118が設けられている。
死角相ガイドを援用して、任意の形状の任意のチャンバ(コンパートメントとも称される)を、充填口および放出チャネルの位置にかかわりなく、充填することが可能である。排出チャネルは、充填中にチャンバ内の圧力発生が防止されるように、後退相を排出する。図9は方形チャンバ120の充填例を示している。まず、死角が定められ、次いで、相ガイドが当該死角から引き出され、ある時点において想定される前進液体/空気メニスカスの全長にわたって張り渡される。したがって、相ガイド同士が互いに重ならないようにすることが重要である。特別な相ガイド(遅延相ガイドと称されてもよい)が使用されて、チャネル全体が充填される前に液体相が排出チャネルに侵入することが防止される。これは、排出チャネルへの侵入が早すぎると圧力発生によって不完全な充填が招来されることになるために、重要である。支援相ガイドを追加することにより、充填挙動は著しく改善されよう。
上述した死角法に係わる別途技術は輪郭相ガイドを援用して行われるコンパートメントの充填である。この場合、相ガイドは、図12(a)および(b)に示したように、チャンバがその輪郭全体に沿って薄い液体層で充填されるようにパターン化される。隣接する相ガイドは同一の輪郭を保ちながら、最終的な所要形状に向かって液体を徐々に操作する。特に、図12(a)は輪郭充填法による方形チャンバの充填例を示している。図中、参照符号122は充填口を、参照符号124は排出口を、参照符号136は一連の輪郭相ガイドをそれぞれ表している。図12(b)は輪郭充填によって充填される複雑なチャンバジオメトリの一例を示している。図12(c)に示したように、死角相ガイド128、補助相ガイド132、ならびに遅延相ガイド130を設けることにより、同じ複雑なジオメトリを死角充填法で充填することも可能である。
図7に示した閉じ込め式液体充填のコンセプトは、過大な液体体積の注入は閉じ込め式相ガイドのオーバフローを引き起こすという問題を有している。これを防止するため、オーバフローコンパートメントを構造に付加することが可能である(図13を参照のこと)。ただし、閉じ込めチャンバエリアが充填される前に液体相がオーバフローチャンバに達することが防止されなければならない。これは、オーバフローチャンバの入口に別のオーバフロー相ガイドを付加することによって実現可能である。任意の閉じ込め式相ガイドの前方でオーバフロー相ガイドが確実に越えられるようにするために、その安定性は、たとえばその相ガイド−壁面角を閉じ込め式相ガイドのいずれの相ガイド−壁面角よりも小さく選択することによって、低減されなければならない。
閉じ込め式相ガイド構造、たとえば図7、8、図13に示した構造は、液体の層状パターン化を可能にする。これは液体を互いに隣接させて順次挿填することができることを意味している。ただし、閉じ込め式相ガイドのみが使用される場合には、問題が生ずる。図14にはこの問題が表されている。図14は、閉じ込め式相ガイド116を使用した多重液体充填例を示している。図14(a)に示したように、第1の液体102は問題なく充填されるが、第2の液体103が第1の液体102と接触すると、図14(b)および(c)からわかるように、充填形状は歪み146を呈する。
図14の原理で、あらかじめ別々に注入された2つの液体を合体させることが可能である。この場合、圧力発生を防止するため、別の排出構造が付加される必要がある。図16および17は液体合体の2つのコンセプトを示している。図16では、第3の液体105が2つの液体間のスペースに導入される。ひとたび他の液体と接触すると、閉じ込め式相ガイドバリアはその機能を喪失し、エアスロットは3つの液体のいずれか1つにかかる最小限の圧力によって充填可能である。図17は、2つの別々の液体のいずれか一方にかかる過圧によって閉じ込め式相ガイドが越えられる別途アプローチを示している。エアスロットの完全な充填を保証するため、オーバフローは排出構造から離れたスロット端で生じなければならない。これは、たとえば相ガイド−壁面接触角の減少による、当該側の相ガイド安定性の低減によって行うことが可能である。
図14、図15、図16、図17に示したコンセプトは逆転も可能である。つまり、これらのコンセプトは液体のコンパートメントからの選択的排出にも使用可能である。この場合には、所望されないメニスカスからの前進を防止する、より多くの閉じ込め式相ガイドが追加されなければならない。
図18のコンセプトはバルブ化原理として使用可能である。液体で充填されたチャネルは、作動時にのみ、流体力学的な液体抵抗をもたらす。空隙が導入される場合には、液体/空気メニスカスの圧力は液体を交換するために克服される必要がある。この原理は、要求に応じて空気が導入・除去されて、液体の流れまたは流れの停止をもたらす、バルブ化コンセプトとして使用可能である。
相ガイドは、チャネルまたはチャンバへの充填中における気泡156の捕獲に使用することができる。これは、気泡が導入される必要のあるエリア周囲で液体/空気界面をガイドすることによって行われる。図21にはその種の構造例が示されている。相ガイド158の形状に応じて、気泡156は所定の位置に固定されるかもしくは一定の自由度を持つことが可能である。図21において、気泡は流れの方向において妨害されず、かくして、その生成後、流れによって運ばれることが可能である。
移動型気泡生成コンセプトは流体ダイオード160の創出に使用することができる。この場合、気泡は、それがチャネルの入口をブロックするまで、一方向に流動性を有する流体ダイオードチャンバ内で生成される。反対方向の流れについては、気泡は気泡捕獲相ガイド158によって捕えられる。この場合、気泡156はチャネル幅全体をブロックすることがないため、流体流れは持続可能である。このコンセプトは、疎水性または低親水性パッチについてだけでなく、その他の相、たとえば空気または水に代えて油相についても機能する。
(b)は、充填時にチャネルをブロックする気泡156(図23(c))が形成され、こうして、流れは前方方向に生ずることを示している。逆方向の流れについては、気泡は捕獲構造によって再び捕獲され、こうして、流れを妨害することはない。図23(e)は、気泡捕獲に疎水性(または低親水性)パッチが使用される代替の実施形態を示している。これらのパッチの利点は、液体表面張力が減少するにつれて気泡の移動性が増大されることである。
上述した相ガイド構造の用途は非常に多い。そもそも液体がチャンバ、チャネル、毛管またはチューブに導入される場合には、充填挙動を制御するために、本発明による相ガイドを使用することができよう。
の原理はまた、第2の液体の湿潤特性が第1の液体の湿潤特性よりも著しく低い場合の液体/液体界面についても機能するであろう。この場合、この第2の液体は、上記の例および用途に述べたような、気相と同様の挙動を示すであろう。
Claims (24)
- コンパートメントを液体で部分的に湿潤させるための相ガイドパターンであって、
前記コンパートメントに少なくとも一定量の液体体積の境界を形成するための少なくとも1つの閉じ込め式相ガイドが設けられ、前記液体体積の境界の少なくとも一部は前記コンパートメントの壁面によって閉じられておらず、
前記相ガイドは、前進面が相ガイドを越える前に相ガイドに沿って整列されるように、前進相面の全長に及ぶ毛管圧バリアである、相ガイドパターン。 - 充填プロセス中のある時点に前進または後退液体を閉じ込める少なくとも2つの相ガイドを含む、請求項1に記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 前記相ガイドは、メニスカスが相ガイドを飛び越える前に少なくとも部分的に相ガイドに沿って整列するように、毛管圧境界として作用する、移動液体/気体、液体/油、または気体/油メニスカスの全長に亘り湿潤性の異なる材料の溝、隆起、または線を含んでなる、請求項1又は2に記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 超過液体を受けることによって、前記閉じ込め式相ガイドのオーバーフローを防止するためのオーバフローコンパートメントが設けられている、請求項1〜3のいずれか1項記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 排出チャネルを更に備える、請求項1〜3のいずれか1項記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 1以上の支援相ガイドを更に備える、請求項1〜3のいずれか1項記載の相ガイドパターン。
- コンパートメント内に含まれた液体の流れをガイドするための相ガイドパターンであって、
前記相ガイドは、前進面が相ガイドを越える前に相ガイドに沿って整列されるように、前進相面の全長に及ぶ毛管圧バリアであり、
前記相ガイドパターンの少なくとも1つの相ガイドは、液体相による相ガイドのオーバフローが生ずる位置を制御すべく、前記相ガイドに沿って工学的な毛管力の局所的変化が生ずる形状とされ、
液体による相ガイドの前記オーバフローが引き起こされる相ガイドに沿った前記位置は、毛管力が局所的に変化する位置にあると共に相ガイドの最も弱い点を表し、よって、相ガイドの安定性が規定される、相ガイドパターン。 - 前記液体が前進する場合において、前記毛管力の変化は毛管力の増大であり、
前進液体相から離れた側で、前記相ガイドパターンは前記コンパートメントの第1の壁面との間に第1の角度を、前記コンパートメントの第2の壁面との間に第2の角度を、それぞれ形成し、前記第1の角度は前記第2の角度よりも小さく、よって、この小さいほうの角度部でオーバフローが引き起こされるか、または
前進相とは離れた側に、相ガイドと前記コンパートメントの第1および第2の壁面とによって形成されたいずれの角度よりも小さい屈曲角を有する相ガイド屈曲部が導入されるか、または
相ガイドの前進相から離れた側に、枝分かれ構造が設けられ、相ガイドと前記枝分かれ構造とによって形成される角度は、相ガイドと前記コンパートメントの第1および第2の壁面とによって形成されたいずれの角度よりも小さい、請求項7記載の相ガイドパターン。 - 前記液体が後退する場合において、前記毛管力の変化は毛管力の減少であり、
後退液体相から離れた側で、前記相ガイドパターンは前記コンパートメントの第1の壁面との間に第1の角度を、前記コンパートメントの第2の壁面との間に第2の角度を、それぞれ形成し、前記第1の角度は前記第2の角度よりも小さく、よって、この小さいほうの角度部でオーバフローが引き起こされるか、または
後退相とは離れた側に、相ガイドと前記コンパートメントの第1および第2の壁面とによって形成されたいずれの角度よりも小さい屈曲角を有する相ガイドの屈曲部が導入されるか、または
相ガイドの後退相から離れた側に、枝分かれ構造が設けられ、相ガイドと前記枝分かれ構造とによって形成される角度は相ガイドと前記コンパートメントの第1および第2の壁面とによって形成されたいずれの角度よりも小さい、請求項7記載の相ガイドパターン。 - 前記相ガイドは、メニスカスが相ガイドを飛び越える前に少なくとも部分的に相ガイドに沿って整列するように、毛管圧境界として作用する、移動液体/気体、液体/油、または気体/油メニスカスの全長に亘り湿潤性の異なる材料の溝、隆起、または線を含んでなる、請求項7〜9のいずれか1項記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 充填プロセス中のある時点に前進または後退液体を閉じ込める少なくとも2つの相ガイドを含んでなり、前記相ガイドは、所定の順序による相ガイドの順次的オーバフローおよび/または選択的オーバフローを定めるために、安定性が相違している、請求項7〜10のいずれか1項記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 少なくとも1つの閉じ込め式相ガイドが前記コンパートメント内で少なくとも1つの液体体積の境界を形成するために設けられ、前記液体体積の境界の少なくとも一部は前記コンパートメントの壁面によっては閉じ込められていない、請求項2〜11のいずれか1項記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 超過液体を受容するためにオーバフローコンパートメントが設けられ、これによって、閉じ込め式相ガイドのオーバフローが防止される、請求項2〜12のいずれか1項記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 前記オーバフローコンパートメントはいずれの閉じ込め式相ガイドよりも低い安定性を有する相ガイドによって閉鎖される、請求項13記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 互いに隣接する液体体積を順次に挿填または排出するために閉じ込め式相ガイドが設けられる、請求項2〜14のいずれか1項記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 充填または排出中の液体形状を維持するための少なくとも1つの輪郭相ガイドをさらに含んでなる、請求項15記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 2つまたはそれ以上の液体が少なくとも2つの閉じ込め式相ガイドによって分離されており、前記液体は少なくとも1つの閉じ込め式相ガイドのオーバフローによって合体可能であるか、または
前記輪郭相ガイド間の空のスペースへの付加的な液体の挿填によって合体可能である、請求項2〜16のいずれか1項記載の相ガイドパターン。 - 液体は少なくとも2つの閉じ込め式相ガイドによって閉じ込められており、最初にオーバフローされる相ガイドの安定性は他方の相ガイドの安定性よりも低い、請求項2〜17のいずれか1項記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 前記安定性を低減させるために、オーバフローされるべき相ガイドの相ガイド−壁面接触角の少なくとも1つは、他方の閉じ込め式相ガイドの相ガイド−壁面接触角のいずれよりも小さく選択されるか、または
前記安定性を低減させるために、オーバフローされるべき相ガイドに、閉じ込め式相ガイドの相ガイド−壁面接触角のいずれよりも小さい屈曲角を有する屈曲部が導入されるか、または
前記安定性を低減させるために、閉じ込め式相ガイドの相ガイド−壁面接触角のいずれよりも小さい角度が形成されるようにして枝分かれ構造が設けられる、請求項18記載の相ガイドパターン。 - 少なくとも1つの相ガイドは、前記相ガイドが設けられなければ充填中に湿潤されなかったか、もしくは排出中に排出されなかったと考えられるスペースによって形成される少なくとも1つの死角から発している、請求項2〜19のいずれか1項記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 排出チャネルは、想定されるマイクロ流体スペースが、前進液体の場合において完全に充填されるか、または、後退液体の場合において完全に排出されるまでメニスカスが排出構造に侵入することをブロックする遅延相ガイドによって閉鎖される請求項20記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 充填または排出されるべきコンパートメントの境界から一定の距離を保ってコンパートメントの輪郭に追従する少なくとも1つの輪郭相ガイドが設けられる、請求項2〜21のいずれか1項記載の相ガイドパターン。
- 請求項22記載の相ガイドパターンを含んだコンパートメントを充填および/または排出する方法であって、最初にスペース全体の輪郭が充填され、続いて、付加的な輪郭相ガイドによって所要の形状に向かって徐々に操作されるか、または 最初にスペース全体の輪郭が排出され、続いて、付加的な輪郭相ガイドによってスペースが徐々に排出される、方法。
- 請求項1〜23のいずれか1項記載の相ガイドパターンを1以上備える液体のコンパートメント。
