Description
The present application relates generally to optical vortex retarders, and more particularly to optical vortex retarder microarrays and methods of making the same.
The wave plate changes the polarized light by adding a predetermined phase shift between the two orthogonal polarization components of the polarized light field. Traditionally, the additional phase shift is called waveplate retardance and is measured at a fraction of the wavelength for normal incident light. For example, a wave plate that adds a π phase shift between orthogonal polarizations is called a half wave plate, while a wave plate that adds a π / 2 phase shift is called a quarter wave plate. ing.
Wave plates have traditionally been manufactured using uniaxial birefringent materials. A uniaxial birefringent material has two principal refractive indices, namely has a normal refractive index n o and extraordinary refractive index n e, where the birefringence is defined as Δn = n e -n o. In the waveplate, the axis with the low refractive index is called the fast axis, while the axis with the higher refractive index is called the slow axis and is perpendicular to the fast axis. For example, for n e> n o positive uniaxial birefringent material is, while the extraordinary axis is the slow axis, Tsunejiku is fast axis. The extraordinary axis is also the optical axis, which is understood to be the direction in which linearly polarized light propagates through the medium at the same speed regardless of its polarization state. In order to provide the necessary phase shift, typically the optic axis of a uniaxial birefringent material used in the manufacture of conventional waveplates is oriented at an angle that is not perpendicular to the plane of the waveplate. For example, a waveplate is often a uniaxial birefringent material having its optic axis parallel to the plane of the waveplate (ie, referred to as an A-plate), or a uniaxial complex having its optic axis at an oblique angle to the plane of the substrate. Manufactured from a refractive material (ie, referred to as an O-plate). Alternatively, the waveplate can be manufactured from a uniaxial birefringent material having its optic axis perpendicular to the plane of the waveplate (ie, referred to as the C plate) so that its retardance increases with angle of incidence (AOI). )
One important application of wave plates is to change the polarization state of polarized light that passes through the wave plate. For example, a half-wave plate can be used to rotate the direction of linearly polarized light, while a quarter-wave plate can be used to convert linearly polarized light into circularly polarized light. Regarding the former, when the direction of polarization of incident light is directed to θ with respect to the optical axis in the plane of the waveplate, the rotation angle is 2θ. With regard to the latter, typically the direction of polarization of the incident light is oriented at 45 degrees with respect to the optical axis in the plane of the waveplate. In either case, if the incident polarization state is uniform across its cross section, a waveplate is used to provide a uniform polarized beam (ie, a beam of polarized light radiation whose polarization does not change across the beam cross section). Are preferably spatially uniform (ie, do not change across the surface of the wave plate such that the entire surface of the wave plate has the same optical axis direction).
More recently, it has been recognized that inducing spatial polarization changes across a uniformly polarized beam is a very useful wavefront shaping tool. In practice, when such a beam with spatially variable polarization is analyzed using a linear polarizer, the net effect is across the beam cross-section, known as the Pancharatnam-Berry phase. Is the addition of a spatially variable phase shift. Some examples of light beams having linearly varying spatially polarized light are radially polarized light beams and azimuthally polarized light beams (ie, tangentially polarized light beams) where polarization The local axis is parallel to the radial direction, ie, the line connecting the local point and the center point, or tangential, ie, perpendicular to this line. The polarization patterns of these beams are shown in FIG. 1, where the arrows schematically indicate the local direction of polarization of the beams.
Whether the beam is polarized in the radial direction or in the azimuth direction, the direction of polarization depends on the azimuth angle of a particular spatial position and not on the radial distance from the center point. These types of polarized beams are sometimes referred to as cylindrical vector beams or polarized vortex beams. The term “polarized vortex” is related to the term “optical vortex”. An optical vortex is a point in the cross-section of a beam that exhibits a phase anomaly, so the electric field of beam radiation develops by a multiple of π in any closed circuit drawn around that point. Similarly, the polarization vortex is in a linear polarization state, in which the polarization direction develops around the beam axis by a multiple of π. When looking at such a beam, such a beam has zero intensity at the center point (eg, along the axis of the beam if the vortex is centered within the beam). Polarized vortex beams have several unique properties that may be advantageous when used in various practical applications such as particle capture (optical tweezers), microscope resolution enhancement, and photolithography.
One way to obtain a polarized vortex beam is to pass a uniformly polarized optical beam through an optical vortex retarder. An optical vortex retarder, referred to herein simply as a vortex retarder, relates to a class of wave plates having a spatially varying fast axis that rotates about a point. More specifically, the azimuth angle of the fast axis rotates around a point. If the optical retarder is an achromatic retarder (eg, a multi-layer design in which two or more retarders are stacked or laminated to make the optical retarder achromatic), the spatially varying fast axis is the effective fast axis (Ie, the direction that appears to be the fast axis if the multilayer retarder is assumed to be a single layer of birefringent material). The term “azimuth angle” refers to the azimuthal direction of the axis projected onto the plane of the optical retarder and is measured relative to some arbitrary reference point. The azimuth angle of the vortex retarder's fast axis rotates around a point, but the polar angle of the fast axis is typically constant across the surface of the retarder (ie, the vortex retarder is typically spatially Note that it has a uniform retardance. The term “polar angle” refers to a fast axis out-of-plate tilt.
In general, the azimuth angle of the spatially varying fast axis of the vortex retarder will vary with the azimuthal position on the vortex retarder in a predetermined relationship. For example, referring to FIG. 2, typically the spatially varying fast axis azimuth angle θ varies with the azimuthal position φ according to the following equation:
θ (φ) = αφ + θ (0) (1)
Where α is a constant equal to the rate of change of the azimuth angle of the fast axis with respect to the azimuth position. Note that both the fast axis azimuth angle θ and the azimuthal position φ are measured with respect to a predetermined reference point (eg, shown as the x-axis). The azimuth angle of the fast axis at this reference point is θ (0). As shown in FIG. 3A, when θ (0) = 90 degrees, the fast axis is considered to be oriented in the tangential direction. As shown in FIG. 3B, when θ (0) = 0 degrees, the fast axis is considered to be oriented in the radial direction.
Referring again to equation (1), when α = m / 2, the spatially varying fast axis θ is just continuous at all φ, where m is called the vortex retarder mode. It is an integer. In practice, the vortex retarder is often characterized by the mode of the vortex retarder (eg, m = 2α). For example, the vortex retarders shown in FIGS. 3A and 3B are m = 2 vortex retarders. In particular, a vortex retarder with m = 2 (eg, α = 1 there) is a special case where a 1 degree counterclockwise rotation at the azimuth position corresponds to a 1 degree increase in the azimuthal direction of the fast axis. Equivalent to. In contrast, for a vortex retarder with m = -2 (eg, where α = -1), a 1 degree counterclockwise rotation at the azimuth position corresponds to a 1 degree reduction in the fast axis azimuth direction. To do. FIG. 4 shows an example of a vortex retarder having modes equal to 1, −1, 2, and −2.
例えば、LCPを用いた渦リターダの製造は、S.C.McEldowney、D.M.Shemo、R.A.Chipman、およびP.K.Smith、「Creating vortex retarders using photoaligned liquid crystal polymers」、Opt.Lett.Vol.33、134〜136頁(2008年)、ならびにScott C.McEldowneyl、David M.Shemo、および Vortex retarders have been manufactured using a series of birefringent crystals, stress-induced birefringence, nanostructures, liquid crystals (LC), and liquid crystal polymers (LCP). Since the resulting vortex retarder is useful in the visible wavelength range and has a rapidly changing fast axis, it is advantageous to use LC and LCP to produce vortex retarders. In addition, both the LC material and the LCP material can be aligned using a linear photopolymerizable polymer (LPP) layer that is sensitive to linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) light. More specifically, the LPP layer is selectively polymerized in a direction parallel to the LPUV light. Thus, the vortex retarder can be manufactured by rotating at least one of the substrate supporting the LPP layer and the direction of the LPUV light. For example, the manufacture of vortex retarders using LCP is C. McEldownney, D.M. M.M. Chemo, R.A. A. Chipman, and P.M. K. Smith, “Creating vortex retarders using photoaligned liquid crystal polymers”, Opt. Lett. Vol. 33, 134-136 (2008), and Scott C.I. McEldownney, David M. et al. Shemo, and Russell A.I. Chipman, “Vortex retailers produced from photo-aligned liquid crystal polymers”, Vol. 16, pages 7295-7308, 2008, both of which are incorporated herein by reference.
In order to provide an improved vortex retarder, it has been shown to rotate the direction of the substrate and / or LPUV light while illuminating the LPP layer, but this method is similar to that of a single vortex retarder. Limited to production.
J.N.Eakinおよび

Advantageously, each of the optical vortex retarder arrays shown in FIGS. 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B and 9B is designed to be easily controlled and optimized by simply changing the orientation of the separate orientation patches. including. In other words, this method of generating an array of optical vortex retarders is easy to control and optimize regardless of the array design / mode.
More advantageously, the optical vortex retarder arrays shown in FIGS. 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B and 9B include alternating +/− mode vortices. For example, FIG. 5B shows an alternating + 1 / −1 mode optical vortex retarder, while FIG. 6B shows an alternating + 2 / −2 mode optical vortex retarder. Maintaining +/− mode neutrality is believed to result in a stable vortex array without orientation conflicts and / or frustration.
In particular, the orientation patterns shown in FIGS. 5A, 6A, 7A, 8A and 9A take advantage of the nature of the optical vortex retarder array. For example, these orientation patterns are designed to help produce four different vortices using each separate orientation patch (eg, at the location of each patch, four adjacent vortices have a common orientation direction). ) In addition, the singular point of each vortex retarder whose direction of the fast axis is substantially indefinite is conveniently centered at the center of each interstitial region (eg, at the point between each lattice).
Referring to FIG. 10A, which shows a larger area of the orientation pattern shown in FIG. 5A, it is clear that a plurality of
D=3*((V/2)/(cos(45*π/180))−(V/2)) (2)
U=3*V+2*D (3)
P=D/√2 (4)
The characteristics of the array of optical vortex retarders will be determined at least in part by the geometry of the
D = 3 * ((V / 2) / (cos (45 * π / 180)) − (V / 2)) (2)
U = 3 * V + 2 * D (3)
P = D / √2 (4)
For example, if a vortex retarder having a diameter V of 20 microns is desired, the diagonal dimension D of each orientation patch is typically about 8.2 microns, and the unit cell length and width U is typically Typically about 56.6 microns, and the length and width P of each oriented patch is typically about 5.8 microns.
In general, the size of the interstitial region, V, and thus the size of the vortex retarder will be somewhat limited. If the interstitial region is too large, the orientation patch cannot force the LC or LCP to the desired orientation. For example, in this case, the LC or LCP material will have the freedom to deviate from the desired vortex orientation, possibly randomly oriented, or form more than one vortex per gap. If the interstitial region is too small, the LC may not be able to follow the orientation pattern that it is trying to be forced because the LC or LCP cannot make a sudden change in direction.
The exact range of possible sizes of vortex retarders will depend on various parameters including the type of LC or LCP material used. For example, a vortex retarder array based on LCP material that varies between two adjacent alignment regions that differ in orientation by 45 degrees over 5-20 microns (eg, as shown in FIG. 11) is (V + D ) / 2 is modeled to have a parameter in the range of about 5 microns to about 20 microns. Experimentally, a 1D array of vortex retarders based on the same LCP material where each vortex retarder has a diameter of about 15 microns to about 30 microns has been observed.
In addition, the size of the vortex retarder will depend on the viscosity of the LC material and the layer thickness. If the layer thickness is too large, the LC orientation can deviate from the ideal of vertical orientation. If the viscosity is too low, the LC between patches will deviate more freely from the desired orientation behavior. If the viscosity is too high, the LC may be kinetically prevented from organizing in the preferred orientation at each location. In general, the layer thickness will be selected to provide the retardance required by the optical vortex retarder (eg, Γ = Δnd, where d is the layer thickness). For example, in one embodiment, the array of optical vortex retarders is configured as a half-wave plate with an optical wavelength of 540 nm.
In particular, the primary orientation patches (ie, larger squares including 120A-D, 220A-D, 320A-D, and 420) in the above embodiment are at periodic intervals corresponding to the lattice points of a square lattice. Although shown to be placed, it is within the scope of the present invention to place these separate oriented patches at periodic intervals corresponding to different 2D grating types. For example, in one embodiment, the primary orientation patches are arranged at periodic intervals corresponding to lattice points of a hexagonal lattice. In this embodiment, each optical vortex retarder is also centered at a lattice point, so that each optical vortex retarder is surrounded by six separate equidistant patches. In practice, orientation patches consist of a square grid (eg, checkerboard pattern), a triangular grid, a hexagonal grid, or two or more types of regular polygons (ie, squares and octagons) arranged like tiles. Various embodiments centered around a grid are envisioned.
In addition, primary orientation patches (ie, larger squares including 120A-D, 220A-D, 320A-D, and 420) have been shown as having a square shape, but the primary orientation patch. It is also within the scope of the present invention that can be designed in other shapes. For example, in other embodiments, the primary orientation patch is designed as a cross, a circle, a four-pointed star, or a combination thereof. One skilled in the art will appreciate that the unit cell dimensions, patch dimensions, and geometric relationships with respect to interstitial regions may be re-evaluated based on the selected patch shape and the LC or LCP material.
5B, FIG. 6B, FIG. 7B, FIG. 8B, and FIG. 5B, FIG. 6B, FIG. 7B, FIG. 8B and FIG. Although the optical vortex retarder microarray shown in FIG. 9B has been shown, other combinations are also within the scope of the present invention. For example, in one embodiment, an optical vortex retarder microarray includes m = −1 vortices, m = + 1 vortices, and hybrid m = + / − 1 vortices. A hybrid m = + / − 1 vortex is defined as a vortex retarder with m = + 1 in two of the four quadrants and m = −1 in the other two quadrants.
Referring to FIGS. 12 and 13, hybrid m = + / − 2 and m = + / − 4 optical vortex retarder embodiments are shown, respectively, where the arrows drawn are the axes of the birefringent material. (For example, fast axis or slow axis). In the present embodiment shown in the upper half of FIG. 12, the upper half of the vortex retarder is m = + 2, while the lower half of the vortex retarder is m = -2. In the present embodiment shown in the lower half of FIG. 12, the four quadrants of the hybrid vortex retarder alternate between m = + 2 and m = −2. Similarly, in this embodiment shown in the upper half of FIG. 13, the upper half of the vortex retarder is m = + 4, while the lower half of the vortex retarder is m = -4. In the present embodiment shown in the lower half of FIG. 13, the four quadrants of the hybrid vortex retarder alternate between m = + 4 and m = -4.
Advantageously, the 2D patterns shown in FIGS. 5A, 6A, 7A, 8A, 9A and 10 above can provide a relatively large array of optical vortex retarders. For example, referring to FIG. 14, a 3 × 3 array of
One way to create the alignment layer is to use a photolithographic photoalignment technique. For example, in one embodiment, the alignment layer is created as follows.
First, a layer of linearly polymerizable photopolymer (LPP) is coated on a transparent substrate (eg, a 2 × 2 inch glass substrate). For example, in one embodiment, the LPP layer is formed by spin coating a 2 wt% solution of LPP in cyclopentanone onto a glass substrate (eg, 60 seconds at 3000 revolutions per minute (RPM)), whereby 50 nm An alignment layer of a thickness of In other embodiments, the LPP layer is formed using another coating method such as wire coating, gravure-coating, slot coating, and the like. When exposed to linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) light, this LPP is set so that the molecular orientation of the polymer is parallel to the incident polarization (ie, the molecular orientation is determined by the direction of the incident light). It is a material that polymerizes. LPP layers that often contain cinnamic acid derivatives and / or ferulic acid derivatives are well known in the art. An example of a suitable LPP is ROLIC LPP ROP108 / 2CP available from ROLIC Technologies. Another example of an LPP material is polyvinyl 4-methoxy-cinnamate ("PVMC: PolyVinyl 4-Methoxy-Cinnamate"). The LPP coated substrate is optionally baked at a temperature of 150-200 degrees Celsius for several minutes (ie, annealed) to stabilize the LPP layer and / or remove excess solvent from the spin coating process. . Optionally, an adhesion promoter such as a silane coupling agent is applied to the substrate before the LPP is coated on the substrate. Further, suitably, the transparent substrate that supports the LPP layer will include a broadband antireflection (AR) film on its back surface.
The LPP coated substrate is then subjected to LPUV at a wavelength suitable for selectively polymerizing the LPP layer (eg, at a wavelength of 280-365 nm if the LPP is ROLIC LPP ROP108 / 2CP). Irradiated through a photomask fixed using. For example, in one embodiment, a substrate coated with a 50 nm thick ROLIC LPP ROP108 / 2CP layer is irradiated using LPUV light at about 300-340 nm at normal incidence and an energy density of 12 mJ / cm 2 for 10 seconds. Is done. In general, the photomask will have a plurality of apertures arranged in a grid pattern, with the shape of each aperture giving the desired discrete alignment patch shape (eg, square for the pattern shown in FIG. 5A). Selected as For example, in one embodiment, the photomask is a solid metal plate that includes a plurality of square cutouts. In another embodiment, the photomask includes a transparent substrate having an opaque layer, such as chromium, coated / sputtered thereon to provide a plurality of openings and patterned into a predetermined pattern by etching. When the LPP layer is irradiated through the photomask, the small patches of the alignment layer will have the direction set there, while the unexposed areas (ie masked areas) remain non-directional. It is. In order to obtain small patches of alignment layers with different directions, the irradiated LPP-coated substrate is subjected to another irradiation stage using LPUV light with different polarization directions. The second irradiation step is performed through different photomasks or through the same photomask after the photomask has been shifted laterally (eg, to provide linear translation). For example, in one embodiment, an LPP-coated substrate is irradiated with LPUV light having a first polarization through a photomask, and the mask is offset by a predetermined amount of openings. And then the LPP layer is illuminated with LPUV light having a second polarization direction (e.g., the mask is micro-determined in X and Y orientations between exposures). Offset by meters). Depending on the desired alignment pattern, the steps of rotating the polarization of the LPUV light and shifting the photomask will be repeated many times. For example, to provide the alignment pattern shown in FIG. 5A, the photomask must be shifted four times and the direction of the LPUV light needs to be rotated four times (eg, using a waveplate and / or polarizer). is there. In contrast, to provide the orientation pattern shown in FIG. 6A, each of the direction of LPUV light and the position of the photomask need only be switched twice. Alternatively, small patches of alignment layers with different orientations are obtained using a fixed mask and a LVVP light source as the substrate is rotated between irradiation steps (eg, using the 2D pattern shown in FIG. 6A). To form it, it is necessary to rotate the
Another way to create an alignment layer having a plurality of separate alignment patches is to use direct laser writing (DLW) techniques. For example, in one embodiment, the LPP layer is coated on a transparent substrate as described above, but rather than irradiating it through a photomask, the LPP layer is a polarized UV laser beam that causes the LPP layer to be appropriately polarized. The maskless direct laser writing technique used to selectively expose at the location of each patch in the orientation of.
Yet another way to create an alignment layer with a plurality of separate alignment patches is to use a rubbing technique. An example of an alignment material that faces the rubbing direction when mechanically rubbed is polyimide. Polyimide alignment layers are well known in the art and may be deposited by spin coating, wire coating, gravure coating, slot coating, and the like. Optionally, the polyimide layer is baked prior to mechanical rubbing (eg, 180-220 degrees Celsius for about 1 hour). In one embodiment, a plurality of separate orientation patches are formed using microrubbing techniques, and the orientation patches are individually rubbed using a small rubbing tool. In another embodiment, the plurality of separate alignment patches form a resist layer having a plurality of openings arranged in a predetermined 2D pattern on top of the alignment layer and covered with a resist using a synthetic felt cloth. The alignment layer is rubbed and the resist layer is removed.
Once an alignment layer having a plurality of separate alignment patches is formed, the alignment layer is then coated with LC or LCP precursor material to a certain thickness to obtain the desired retardance. If non-polymeric LC materials are used, typically a counter substrate will be used to form the LC cell. For example, in one embodiment, the counter substrate also includes an alignment layer having a 2D pattern of separate alignment patches reflecting that of the first substrate. If an LCP precursor material is used, which can include liquid crystalline monomers, oligomers, or polymers having crosslinkable groups, a single substrate will typically be used. In addition, if an LCP precursor is used, further processing steps may include annealing, UV (ultraviolet) curing, baking, lamination, and / or coating of additional layers. Both LC precursor materials and LCP precursor materials are known in the art and may exhibit a nematic phase, a smectic phase, or a cholesteric phase. For example, the crosslinkable liquid crystal material of the LCP material can exhibit a nematic phase, a smectic phase, or a cholesteric phase. One example of a suitable LCP precursor material includes a crosslinkable diacrylate nematic liquid crystalline compound that is polymerized and / or crosslinked (and not necessarily polarized) thermally and / or with UV radiation. One LCP precursor that is particularly well-suited for use with LPP layers formed using ROLIC LPP ROP108 / 2CP is ROF5151, also available from Rolic, which is cured with UV light. To crosslink the LCP precursor to form an LCP layer (ie, fix the orientation of the LCP vortex array).
If Δn is in-plane birefringence, the LC or LCP material is applied at a thickness d such that the product of Δn * d is 0.5 at the wavelength of interest λ, and the array Each vortex retarder inside is a half-wave vortex retarder. In this case, the LC or LCP material is configured as an A plate. Of course, it is also within the scope of the present invention to use an O-plate type LC material.
The optical vortex retarder microarray described above has the potential to be used for microlithography, driving micro-optomechanical pumps, and processing quantum information. For example, vortex networks are expected to be useful in measuring rotation angles, small linear displacements, and in super-resolution microscopy, 3D scanning interferometry. In addition, the structured light potential energy landscape provided by the vortex retarder array can provide a new type of optical trap.
One particularly useful application of a vortex retarder is to encode information about the orbital angular momentum state of a light beam, which generates a polarization vortex of a given order and then propagates the beam Made by letting. The order of the beam can be maintained over a significant propagation distance and is easily restored. In the case of an array for a periodic array of vortex retarders, the information can be encoded at the location of each vortex retarder. This can be useful for periodic arrays with two orders (eg, +1 and −1). When multiple orders can be generated, the amount of information that can be propagated by a single beam increases exponentially.
Another application for optical vortex retarder arrays involves the manipulation of small particles. It is well known that optical vortices generate angular momentum. Thus, an array of optical vortices can be used to transport small particles once it is correctly designed. One example is the creation of a microfluidic pump based on an array of optical traps, in which each vortex is combined with a high numerical aperture lens to create a trapping region that can transport fluid microscopically. .
Of course, the above-described embodiments and applications are given merely as examples. It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that various modifications, alternative configurations, and / or equivalents can be used without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. For example, although various periodic 2D patterns and regular 2D patterns have been shown, it is within the scope of the present invention to use irregular patterns. In addition, the vortex retarders described above were part of a 2D array of optical vortex retarders, but forming a 1D array or even forming a single micro-sized vortex retarder is still within the scope of the present invention. Is within. Accordingly, the scope of the invention is therefore limited solely by the scope of the appended claims.
