Description
高性能シンチレータのこれらの特性は、当技術分野においてはよく知られている。要するに、「光出力」は、X線又はガンマ線のパルスによって励起された後にシンチレータによって放出される可視光の量である。高い光出力は、光を電気パルスに変換する放射線検出器の能力を高めるので望ましい。(パルスのサイズは通常、放射線エネルギーの量を示す。)
「減衰時間」という用語は、放射線励起が終わった時点において、シンチレータによって放出される光の強度が該光強度の規定割合まで低下するのに要する時間を意味する。PET装置のような多くの用途では、より短い減衰時間は、ガンマ線の効率的な同時計数を可能にするので好ましい。その結果、スキャン時間が短縮され、装置を一層効率的に使用することができる。
幾つかの実施形態では、固溶体は、塩化セリウムと臭化セリウムとを含む。これら化合物の両方とも、商業的に入手可能であり、また公知の方法によって作ることもできる。例えば、塩化セリウム(「cerous chloride」と呼ぶこともある)は、塩酸と炭酸セリウム又は水酸化セリウムとの反応によって調製することができる。臭化セリウムは、同様な方法、例えば炭酸セリウム、酸化セリウム(ceric oxide)又は水酸化セリウムと臭化水素酸との反応によって調製することができる。
シンチレータ組成物は、幾つかの異なる形態で調製することができる。幾つかの実施形態では、組成物は、単結晶質(つまり、「single crystal」)の形態である。単結晶質のシンチレーション結晶は、より大きな透明度の性向を有する。この単結晶質シンチレーション結晶は、例えばガンマ線に使用するもののような高エネルギー放射線検出器にとって特に有用である。
上述したように、光検出器は、当技術分野において全てよく知られた多様な装置とすることができる。非限定的な実例には、光電子倍増管、光ダイオード、CCDセンサ及びイメージ増強管が含まれる。特定の光検出器の選択は、部分的には製作しようとする放射線検出器のタイプ及びその意図した用途に応じて決まることになる。

Claims (10)
- 少なくとも2種類のセリウムハロゲン化物の固溶体を含む、シンチレータ組成物。
- 前記ハロゲン化物が、臭素、塩素及びヨウ素から成る群から選ばれることを特徴とする請求項1記載のシンチレータ組成物。
- 前記固溶体が、塩化セリウムと臭化セリウムとを含むことを特徴とする請求項2記載のシンチレータ組成物。
- 前記塩化セリウム及び臭化セリウムの合計モルに基づいて55モル%〜95モル%の塩化セリウムを含むことを特徴とする請求項3記載のシンチレータ組成物。
- ヨウ化セリウムをさらに含むことを特徴とする請求項3記載のシンチレータ組成物。
- 存在する前記ヨウ化セリウムの量が、該組成物中に存在するセリウムハロゲン化物の合計モルに基づいて0.1モル%〜20モル%の範囲内にあることを特徴とする請求項5記載のシンチレータ組成物。
- 高エネルギー放射線を検出するための放射線検出器であって、
(a) 少なくとも2種類のセリウムハロゲン化物の固溶体を含む結晶シンチレータと、
(b)前記シンチレータによって生成された光パルスの放出に応答して電気信号を生成することができるように、該シンチレータに光学的に結合された光検出器と、
を具備する放射線検出器。 - 前記光検出器が、光電子倍増管、光ダイオード、CCDセンサ及びイメージ増強管から成る群から選ばれた少なくとも1つの装置であることを特徴とする請求項7記載の放射線検出器。

前記シンチレータ結晶は少なくとも2種類のセリウムハロゲン化物の固溶体を含む組成物で形成されたことを特徴とする検出方法。
