Description
図3には、反射型偏光器(例えば、ねじれネマチック高分子層)を用いた構成を概略的に示す。偏光器の反射性のため、バックライトから放射される光の50%が、反射されてバックライトの方に戻り、残りの50%が偏光手段302を透過する。半透明板では比が20/80のため、光の10%(50%のうちの20%)は、半透明板を透過し、40%(50%のうちの80%)は、反射されて偏光手段302の方に戻る。このとき反射光の円偏光は、矢印で示すように反転される。従って、40%の反射光の全てが、再度反射型偏光器302によって反射され、半透明板201の方に戻される。今度は、8%(40%のうちの20%)の光が半透明板201を透過し、残りの32%の光は、反射されて偏光手段302の方に戻る。ここで、再度円偏光が反転され(元来の方向に戻され)るため、残りの光(32%)の全てが偏光手段302を透過して、バックライトの方に戻される。従って、反対偏光の2つの光部分が半透明板を透過することになり、結果的に、暗状態の劣化が生じ、ディスプレイ装置のコントラストが低下する。この特定の例では、10%の光が正しい偏光状態で透過するが、8%の光が誤った偏光状態で透過し、悪影響を及ぼして消失する。
Claims (9)
- バックライトと、
前記バックライト上に配置された偏光手段であって、前記バックライトから放射された光の一部が前記偏光手段を通過し、偏光を有するようになる、偏光手段と、
前記偏光手段上に配置された半透明板であって、前記偏光手段を通過した前記光の第1の部分に対しては透過性で、前記偏光手段を通過した前記光の第2の部分に対しては不透過性であり、該第2の部分の光を前記バックライトの側に反射する、半透明板と、
前記半透明板上に配置された液晶層と、
を有する半透明型液晶ディスプレイ装置であって、
さらに、前記半透明板と前記偏光手段との間に配置された偏光解消手段を有し、
該偏光解消手段は、前記光の前記第2の部分の偏光を解消するように作動し、これにより、前記光の前記第2の部分の一部は、前記偏光手段を透過するようになることを特徴とする半透明型液晶ディスプレイ装置。 - 前記偏光手段は、吸収型偏光手段であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の半透明型液晶ディスプレイ装置。
- 前記偏光手段は、円偏光器を有することを特徴とする請求項2に記載の半透明型液晶ディスプレイ装置。
- 前記偏光手段は、反射型偏光手段であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の半透明型液晶ディスプレイ装置。
- 前記偏光手段は、ねじれネマチック層を有することを特徴とする請求項4に記載の半透明型液晶ディスプレイ装置。
- 前記半透明板は、ミラーに孔を有するタイプの半透明板であり、少なくとも光に対して不透過性の部分と、少なくとも光に対して透過性の部分とを有することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の半透明型液晶ディスプレイ装置。
- 前記偏光解消手段は、前記半透明板に直接接するように配置されることを特徴とする請求項6に記載の半透明型液晶ディスプレイ装置。
- 前記偏光解消手段は、白色拡散型偏光解消反射層と、該反射層に一体化され該反射層の一部を形成する光散乱粒子とを有することを特徴とする請求項7に記載の半透明型液晶ディスプレイ装置。
- 前記液晶層は、ねじれネマチック型、超ねじれネマチック型または非ねじれネマチック型であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の半透明型液晶ディスプレイ装置。
