Description
Claims (8)
- 電解質と、
空気極電極および燃料極電極と、
少なくとも1つの反応物出口に近接し、空気極触媒層の端部から燃料電池の外側縁部まで延在する非反応性領域からなる電解質凝縮ゾーンと、
その非反応性領域にわたって延在する燃料極触媒層と、を含むとともに、
前記燃料極触媒層の端部が、実質的に縁部シールの内側縁部に一致した燃料電池であって、
前記電解質凝縮ゾーンは、反応物ガスストリーム中に蒸発した電解質が該燃料電池から流出する前に、その電解質を前記燃料電池中に凝縮させて戻すように構成されており、
前記縁部シールが、酸化タングステンと、酸化タングステンおよびシリコンカーバイドの混合物と、からなる群から選択された材料から作製されることを特徴とする燃料電池。 - 前記電解質がリン酸であることを特徴とする請求項1記載の燃料電池。
- 前記電解質が、高温電解質膜を有する燃料電池内に包含される遊離酸であることを特徴とする請求項1記載の燃料電池。
- 電解質を含む少なくとも1つの燃料電池を備えた燃料電池スタックアッセンブリの作動方法であって、
空気極電極に隣接して空気極流れ場プレートを介して酸化剤を流すステップであって、前記空気極電極が、空気極触媒層の端部から燃料電池の外側縁部まで延在する非反応性領域からなる、少なくとも1つの反応物出口に隣接する電解質凝縮ゾーンを有する、酸化剤を流すステップと、
燃料極電極に隣接して燃料極流れ場プレートを介して燃料を流すステップであって、前記燃料極電極が前記非反応性領域にわたって延在する、実質的に縁部シールの内側縁部と一致する端部を有する燃料極触媒層を有する、燃料を流すステップと、
燃料電池スタックアッセンブリにおける前記電解質凝縮ゾーンに近接する少なくとも1つの冷却液チャネルを介して冷却液を流すステップと、
前記酸化剤ストリーム中に蒸発した電解質が前記燃料電池から流出する前に、その電解質を、前記電解質凝縮ゾーンにおいて前記燃料電池中に凝縮させて戻すステップと、
を含み、
前記縁部シールが、酸化タングステンと、酸化タングステンおよびシリコンカーバイドの混合物と、からなる群から選択された材料から作製されることを特徴とする燃料電池スタックアッセンブリの作動方法。 - 前記電解質がリン酸であることを特徴とする請求項4記載の燃料電池スタックアッセンブリの作動方法。
- 前記電解質が、高温電解質膜を有する燃料電池内に包含される遊離酸であることを特徴とする請求項4記載の燃料電池スタックアッセンブリの作動方法。
- 前記冷却液が、前記電解質凝縮ゾーンに近接して前記燃料電池スタックアッセンブリに入ることを特徴とする請求項4記載の燃料電池スタックアッセンブリの作動方法。
- 前記燃料電池の反応性部分よりも前記電解質凝縮ゾーンにより近接して冷却液経路が多数存在することを特徴とする請求項4記載の燃料電池スタックアッセンブリの作動方法。
