Description
図3は、従来のコレステリック液晶表示素子10を表示面側から見た図である。図3には黒色の背景に35という数字がカラーでセグメント表示されている例が示されている。また、各セグメント電極11に電圧を印加するためのセグメント引出線12が示されている。
表示面側から、セグメント電極11と遮光膜13の層、コレステリック液晶が充填された液晶部(セル)14、光吸収層15、コモン電極(ベタ電極)16、ガラス基板17が示されており、セグメント引出線12は省略されている。セグメント電極11は透明であり、遮光膜13と光吸収層15はブラックである。
図5〜図7は、本発明の第1の実施例を説明するための図である。
図7は、コレステリック液晶における透過状態、電界印加により生成された反射状態及び機械的作用により生成された反射状態を説明する図である。図示されているように、電界印加により生成された反射状態と機械的作用による反射状態では液晶の状態がやや相異する。そのため背景と表示色(OFF反射色)の色合いが若干異なるため、視認性に不満が残る場合がある。
図8は、第2の実施例の表示素子200を正面から見た図である。第2の実施例は、背景色用に図9に示す外周電極280が用いられるので、外周電極引出線285のある点が第1の実施例を示す図5の正面図と図8の違いである。
次に、図11A〜図13により、第3の実施例を説明する。
図11Aは第3の実施例の表示素子300の断面を示すものである。表示面側から、上部の基板310、上部のベタ電極320、液晶部330、パターン340、ベタパターン350、下部のベタ電極360、下部の基板370及び光吸収層380が積層されている。
図11Cは、パターン340とベタパターン350の色調の組み合わせを示す図である。(1)の双方ともブラックの組み合わせがコントラストが鮮やかであり、光吸収膜380を省略することができる。しかし、設計上はブラックと透明の4とおりの組み合わせが採用可能であり、透明層としては、配向膜や絶縁膜などを利用することができる。透明層は,膜を形成しないことでも良く,パターン340とベタパターン350がともに透明である場合には,一方が膜無しでも良い。
単層BKと記載されたグラフはブラック1層からなるベタパターン350部分の液晶の反射率と印加電圧の関係を表したものであり、2層BKと記載されたグラフは、パターン340が突出してブラック2層からなる部分の液晶の反射率と印加電圧の関係を表したものである。
図14は、第4の実施例のコレステリック液晶表示素子400の断面を示す図である。図11Aに示された第3の実施例のコレステリック液晶表示素子と比べると、パターンがベタパターン上に多段階の厚さで印刷されているところが異なる。図14では、パターンA410、パターンB420、パターンC430の3パターンの場合が例示されている。
以上説明したように、本発明によれば、OFF表示色をカラー化した背景に埋没することが可能となることから、背景色にカラフルな背景が切望されている、時計、マーカー表示等のデザイン性を重視する産業分野において、本発明の表示素子を利用しそのデザイン性の要望に答えることができる。
Claims (3)
- 色反射状態と透明状態の双安定状態を有するコレステリック液晶を用いた表示素子において、当該表示素子の表示部の色を前記コレステリック液晶の色反射状態と透明状態により形成し、当該表示素子の背景部を、機械的圧力により前記コレステリック液晶の色反射状態に固定したことを特徴とする表示素子。
- 前記表示部は、セグメントに分割されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示素子。
- 前記セグメント用のセグメント電極に対向する位置にコモン電極パターンを形成し、前記セグメント電極の引出配線上には対向電極が存在しないようにしたことを特徴とする請求項2に記載の表示素子。
