食材を噛む力が低下した人(歯が抜けている人、入歯の人、老人、顎や歯が悪い人)が、良く噛んで食べる必要がある食材(肉、烏賊、ラッキョウ、沢庵等)を噛まずに食べると消化不良を起こす場合がある。
特許文献1には、刃身の刃先側に鋸刃を設けた包丁が開示されている。
また、特許文献2には、把手を設けた、少なくとも一枚の切断刃を基台に回動可能に取り付けた食品切断器が開示されている。

特許文献1の包丁は、把手を持った状態で、カバーを手で押し下げて冷凍肉を切る構造になっているが、鋸刃が小さいので、食材の種類や大きさによっては、良く切れない。
特許文献2の食品切断器は、把手を回動させて食品を切断する構造になっているが、鋸刃が形成されていないので切れ味が悪いとともに、食材カスが切断刃間に溜まる。
