(ただし、n1x、n1y、n1zはそれぞれx軸、y軸、z軸方向における第1層の主屈折率を表し、n2x、n2y、n2zはそれぞれx軸、y軸、z軸方向における第2層の主屈折率を表す)
このような第1層161と第2層162間のx方向の屈折率差がy方向の屈折率差より小さいと、偏光されない光が膜に垂直方向(即ち、z方向)に入射する時、フレネルの式(Fresnel’s equation)によって、y方向と並んでいる偏光成分は、高い屈折率差により大部分反射されるが、x方向と並んでいる偏光成分は、低い屈折率差により一部分は透過され、一部分は反射される。
n2x=n2y=n2z=1.57
このように第1層と第2層のx及びz方向の屈折率が同じであり、y方向の屈折率が異なる場合、偏光されない光が膜に垂直方向(即ち、z方向)に入射する時、フレネルの式によってx方向の偏光成分は全部透過し、y方向の偏光成分は全部反射することになる。このような特性を有する複屈折性の誘電体多層膜の代表的な例として、3M社のDBEF(Dual Brightness Enhancement Film)を挙げられる。前記DBEFは、互いに異なる2つの材質の薄膜が交互的に数百層が積層されている多層膜構造に形成されている。即ち、複屈折率(birefringence)が非常に高いポリエチレンナフタレート(polyethylene naphtalate)層と等方性構造を有するポリメチルメタクリレート(polymethyl methacrylate;PMMA)層を交互に積層してDBEFを形成する。ナフタレン基は平面構造を有しているので、隣接した時に積層が容易であり、積層方向の屈折率が他の方向の屈折率と大きく異なるようになる。一方、PMMAは、無定形高分子として等方性配向をするので、全ての方向への屈折率が等しい。

このように、第1層161と第2層162のz方向の屈折率が異なる場合、偏光されない光が膜に垂直方向(即ち、z方向)に入射する時、フレネルの式によってx方向の偏光成分も一部透過及び一部反射され、y方向の偏光成分も一部反射及び一部透過される。この際、第1層161又は第2層162の厚さや屈折率を調節して反射される光の反射率を半透過型液晶表示装置の特性に合わせて調節することができる。即ち、反射特性を強化した半透過型液晶表示装置は反射率を高くする一方、透過特性を重要視する半透過型液晶表示装置は、反射率を低くして透過率を向上させる。

Claims (13)
- 第1基板と、
その内面が前記第1基板と対向するように位置する第2基板と、
前記第1基板と第2基板との間に形成された液晶層と、
前記第1基板の外面に形成された第1偏光板と、
前記第2基板の内面と反対側の外面に形成された第2偏光板と、
前記第1偏光板の後側に位置したバックライトと、
前記第1偏光板と前記バックライトとの間に形成され、互いに異なる屈折率を有する第1層及び第2層が交互に多数積層され、第1方向に偏光される入射光の第1偏光成分を反射し、前記第1方向と直交する第2方向に偏光される入射光の第2偏光成分を部分的に反射及び透過する透明半透過膜とを備えてなり、
該透明半透過膜は、膜の厚さ方向をz軸とし、膜の面をx−y面とする時、前記第1層及び第2層の3つの主屈折率n x 、n y 、n z が、

の関係を満足することを特徴とする半透過型液晶表示装置。 - 前記半透過膜は、前記第1偏光板と一体に形成される請求項1記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記半透過膜は、前記第1偏光板と分離された別の膜形態に形成されている請求項1記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記半透過膜の第1層は、膜の面内に屈折率異方性を有し、前記第2層は、膜の面内に屈折率異方性を有しない請求項1から3のいずれか1つに記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記半透過膜は、入射光の偏光状態及び方向によって透過率及び反射率の大きさが異なる異方性特性を有する請求項1から4のいずれか1つに記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記半透過膜は、入射光の偏光状態及び方向によって透過率及び反射率の大きさが異なる2つの異方性半透過膜を、偏光方向が互いに垂直になるように付着して形成されている請求項1から5のいずれか1つに記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記半透過膜は、入射光の偏光状態及び方向によって透過率及び反射率の大きさが異なる第1半透過膜と、入射光の偏光状態及び方向と関係なく等方的に透過及び反射特性を有する第2半透過膜を付着して形成されている請求項1から6のいずれか1つに記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記半透過膜は、膜の面に垂直に光が入射する時、いずれの方向の偏光成分に対しても4%以上の反射率を有する請求項1から7のいずれか1つに記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1基板又は前記第2基板に形成された光散乱層を更に備える請求項1から8のいずれか1つに記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記光散乱層は、前記第1基板と第1偏光板との間、前記第2基板と第2偏光板との間又は前記第1偏光板と半透過膜との間に形成されている請求項9記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1基板又は前記第2基板に形成された位相差板を更に備える請求項1から10のいずれか1つに記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記位相差板は、前記第1基板と第1偏光板との間又は前記第2基板と第2偏光板との間に形成されている請求項11記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記液晶層の屈折率異方性Δnと厚さdをかけた値Δndが0.2〜0.6μm程度である請求項1から12のいずれか1つに記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
