Description
また、本発明の表示素子の第2の構成は、光源と、前記光源から出射された光を伝播させる導波路とを備え、導波路中を伝播している光を導波路側面より外部へ取り出す表示素子であって、前記導波路の少なくとも一部が透明なゲルからなり、前記導波路側面に貼付され、前記導波路の形状を変形させる複数のアクチュエータをさらに備え、前記アクチュエータを選択的に動作させて前記アクチュエータを変形させることにより、前記導波路側面の形状を変化させて、前記光を前記導波路側面から前記導波路外部へ取り出すことを特徴とする。
本発明の実施の形態に係る表示素子および表示装置について図を用いて説明する。図1は、本発明の実施の形態1に係る表示素子1の構成を示す断面図である。実施の形態1の表示素子1は、光源2と、光源2から出射された光を伝播させる導波路3と、導波路3の形状を変形させる複数のアクチュエータ4とを備えている。
本発明の実施の形態2に係る表示素子11について、図4を用いて説明する。実施の形態2の表示素子11と、実施の形態1の表示素子1とは、アクチュエータが異なる。それ以外の構成は略同一であるので、同一の機能を有する部材には同一符号を付し、説明を省略する。
本発明の実施の形態3に係る表示素子について図5を用いて説明する。図5は実施の形態3に係る表示素子21の構成を示す断面図である。図5に示しているように、表示素子21は、光源22と、導波路23と、導波路23に対向する対向電極膜25と、導波路23近傍に配置された微粒子26とを備えている。
本発明の実施の形態4に係る表示素子31について図8を用いて説明する。実施の形態4に係る表示素子31は実施の形態3に係る表示素子21の導波路23の導波路電極膜23c設置側表面に、表面張力が比較的大きな塗布材料37が塗布されている構成である。塗布材料37の表面張力は、具体的には、50mN/m以上が望ましい。塗布材料37は、コア23aおよび導波路電極膜23cを覆っていて、塗布材料37は、コアの一部であり、導波路23中を伝播する光は、塗布材料37と空気との界面でも全反射する。塗布材料37以外の部材は同一の機能を示すので同一の符号を付し、説明を省略する。
Claims (11)
- 光源と、前記光源から出射された光を伝播させる導波路とを備え、導波路中を伝播している光を導波路側面より外部へ取り出す表示素子であって、
前記導波路側面に貼付され、前記導波路の形状を変形させる複数のアクチュエータをさらに備え、
前記アクチュエータは、前記導波路側面に設置された電極膜と、前記導波路に対向して、近接している外部電極膜とを備え、
前記外部電極膜と前記電極膜との間に電圧を印加することで生じる静電力によって、前記アクチュエータを選択的に動作させて前記アクチュエータを変形させることにより、前記導波路側面の形状を変化させて、前記光を前記導波路側面から前記導波路外部へ取り出すことを特徴とする表示素子。 - 前記導波路は、コアおよび前記コアの一つの側面に沿って形成されたクラッドを備え、
前記アクチュエータは、前記クラッドに貼付されていて、
前記アクチュエータの変形により、前記導波路側面の形状を変化させる、請求項1に記載の表示素子。 - 前記導波路の、少なくともコアの一部が変形することで、前記光を導波路外部へ取り出す、請求項2に記載の表示素子。
- 前記外部電極膜は、前記導波路側面側に凸部を有し、前記静電力により、前記外部電極膜の前記凸部が、前記導波路側面を押圧することで、前記導波路の形状を変化させる、請求項1に記載の表示素子。
- 前記導波路の少なくとも一部が弾性体からなる、請求項1に記載の表示素子。
- 前記アクチュエータが画素ごとに形成されている、請求項1に記載の表示素子。
- 光源と、前記光源から出射された光を伝播させる導波路とを備え、導波路中を伝播している光を導波路側面より外部へ取り出す表示素子であって、
前記導波路の少なくとも一部が透明なゲルからなり、
前記導波路側面に貼付され、前記導波路の形状を変形させる複数のアクチュエータをさらに備え、
前記アクチュエータを選択的に動作させて前記アクチュエータを変形させることにより、前記導波路側面の形状を変化させて、前記光を前記導波路側面から前記導波路外部へ取り出すことを特徴とする表示素子。 - 前記光源は、3色LEDまたは3色レーザである、請求項1から7のいずれかに記載の表示素子。
- 請求項1から7のいずれかに記載の表示素子と、
前記光源を駆動させる前記光源駆動回路と、
前記アクチュエータを駆動させるアクチュエータ駆動回路と、
前記光源駆動回路および前記アクチュエータ駆動回路を制御する制御回路とを備えたことを特徴とする表示装置。 - 請求項6に記載の表示素子と、
前記各アクチュエータをそれぞれ制御するアクティブマトリクス素子とを備えたことを特徴とする表示装置。 - 前記アクティブマトリクス素子は、TFTまたはTFDである、請求項10に記載の表示装置。
