Description
【0001】
Phys.

Phys.
Adv.
Phys.

Phys. Electron. Devices,44巻,1245頁,1997年)。
【0087】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an organic electroluminescent device, and more particularly to a thin film device that emits light by applying an electric field to a light emitting layer made of an organic compound.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, as a thin film type electroluminescent (EL) element, there are ZnS, CaS, SrS, etc. which are inorganic material II-VI compound semiconductors, Mn which is an emission center, rare earth elements (Eu, Ce, Tb, Sm, etc.) ) Is generally used, but an EL element made from the above inorganic material is
1) AC drive is required (50-1000Hz),
2) High drive voltage (about 200V)
3) Full color is difficult (especially blue is difficult),
4) The cost of the peripheral drive circuit is high.
Has the problem.
[0003]
However, in recent years, EL devices using organic thin films have been developed to improve the above problems. In particular, in order to improve luminous efficiency, the type of electrode is optimized for the purpose of improving the efficiency of carrier injection from the electrode, and a hole transporting layer made of aromatic diamine and a light emitting layer made of 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum complex, Development of an organic electroluminescent device equipped with a substrate (Appl. Phys. Lett., 51, 913, 1987) significantly improves luminous efficiency compared to conventional EL devices using single crystals such as anthracene. Has been made. Also, for example, by using 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum complex as a host material and doping with a fluorescent dye for laser such as coumarin (J. Appl. Phys., 65, 3610, 1989), the luminous efficiency is improved. In addition, conversion of light emission wavelength and the like are also being performed, which is approaching practical characteristics.
[0004]
In addition to the electroluminescent device using the low molecular weight material as described above, as a material of the light emitting layer, poly (p-phenylene vinylene), poly [2-methoxy-5- (2-ethylhexyloxy) -1,4 Development of electroluminescent devices using polymer materials such as -phenylenevinylene] and poly (3-alkylthiophene), and devices that combine low molecular light emitting materials and electron transfer materials with polymers such as polyvinylcarbazole. Has been done.
[0005]
One of the major problems when applying such an organic electroluminescent element to the field of flat panel displays is to improve luminous efficiency. In particular, low power consumption is a point in application to display elements of portable devices. In application to a small character display element, a simple matrix driving method is mainly employed. However, in this method, it is necessary to illuminate the element with a high duty ratio in a very short time, and therefore the voltage is reduced. There is a problem that the power emission efficiency is lowered due to the increase.
[0006]
In organic electroluminescent elements reported so far, light is emitted basically by a combination of a hole transport layer and an electron transport layer. That is, the holes injected from the anode move through the hole transport layer, recombine with the electrons injected from the cathode and moving through the electron transport layer near the interface between the two layers, and the hole transport layer and In principle, the electron transport layer is excited to emit light.
[0007]
Conventionally, 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum complexes and the like have been reported as electron transport materials having a high electron transport capability, but these are substances having good sublimation properties and excellent film quality after vacuum deposition. The electron mobility was about two orders of magnitude lower than the hole mobility of a general hole transport material, and could not be said to be sufficient.
[0008]
In addition, low molecular weight compounds having a molecular weight of less than 400, such as oxadiazole derivatives, quinoxaline derivatives, and phenanthroline derivatives, exhibit high electron mobility, but they can be used alone as electron transport materials because they have low Tg and are easily crystallized. It was difficult to use.
[0009]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
As described above, in order to improve the light emission efficiency of the organic electroluminescence device, the electrons injected from the cathode are efficiently transported to the light emitting layer, and the holes passing through the light emitting layer are completely blocked and reused. It is necessary to reduce the amount of current that does not contribute to coupling, and further improvement studies have been desired for the device structure and materials for producing a device with high luminous efficiency and stability.
[0010]
The present invention has been made in view of the above-described conventional situation, and an object of the present invention is to provide an organic electroluminescence device that can emit light with high luminous efficiency and can be driven stably.
[0011]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The gist of the present invention resides in the organic electroluminescent elements shown in the following (1) to (5).
(1) In an organic electroluminescent device in which an anode, a light emitting layer, a hole blocking layer, an electron transport layer and a cathode are formed in this order on a substrate, the electron transport layer comprises a host material having a molecular weight of 400 to 800, a molecular weight Less than 400 dopant material, wherein the host material is, An aluminum complex of 8-hydroxyquinoline, an aluminum complex of 2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinoline, or Ten- Hydroxybenzo [h] QuinolineAn organic electroluminescent element in which the aluminum complex and the dopant material are oxadiazole derivatives or phenanthroline derivatives, and the electron mobility of the dopant material is higher than the electron mobility of the host material.
(2) The organic electroluminescence device according to (1), wherein the ionization potential of the hole blocking layer is 0.1 eV or more larger than the ionization potential of the light emitting layer.
(3) The organic electroluminescence device according to (1) or (2), wherein the hole blocking layer contains a metal complex, a styryl compound, a triazole derivative, or a phenanthroline derivative.
(4) The organic electroluminescence device according to any one of (1) to (3), wherein the thickness of the hole blocking layer is in the range of 0.5 to 50 nm.
[0012]
That is, the present inventors have conducted the following studies for the purpose of providing an organic electroluminescence device that can emit light with high luminous efficiency and can be driven stably.
[0013]
First, it is represented by an aluminum complex of 8-hydroxyquinoline as an electron transport layer.aluminumOxadiazole derivatives with complex as host materialTheAmong the materials selected from the enanthroline derivatives, an electron transporting compound having a molecular weight of less than 400 is used as a dopant material, and by using these together, it is possible to achieve both high electron mobility and excellent film quality.
[0014]
In addition, although the electron mobility of the electron transport layer is improved by doping an electron transport compound having a molecular weight of less than 400, it reaches the cathode without recombining with electrons among the holes injected from the anode. No significant effect was obtained with respect to the effect of preventing the problem.
[0015]
Therefore, as a result of further studies, the present inventors have provided a hole blocking layer having an ionization potential that is 0.1 eV or more larger than the ionization potential of the light emitting layer so as to be in contact with the cathode side interface of the light emitting layer. By providing an electron transport layer containing two or more kinds of electron transport materials as described above on the cathode side of the hole blocking layer, it is possible to achieve a high amount of current that does not contribute to recombination while achieving both high electron transport properties and excellent film quality. It has been found that it is more preferable because it can be reduced to improve luminous efficiency.
[0016]
In the present invention, a metal complex, a styryl compound, a triazole derivative, or a phenanthroline derivative is preferably used as the material for the hole blocking layer, and the film thickness of the hole blocking layer is preferably 0.5 to 50 nm.
[0017]
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Embodiments of the organic electroluminescent element of the present invention will be described below in detail with reference to the drawings.
[0018]
1 and 2 are cross-sectional views schematically showing an example of the structure of the organic electroluminescence device according to the embodiment of the present invention, where 1 is a substrate, 2 is an anode, 3 is an anode buffer layer, and 4 is hole transport. Layers 5, 5 are light-emitting layers, 6 is a hole blocking layer, 7 is an electron transport layer, and 8 is a cathode.
[0019]
The substrate 1 serves as a support for the organic electroluminescent element, and a quartz or glass plate, a metal plate or a metal foil, a plastic film, a sheet, or the like is used. In particular, a glass plate or a transparent synthetic resin plate such as polyester, polymethacrylate, polycarbonate, or polysulfone is preferable. When using a synthetic resin substrate, it is necessary to pay attention to gas barrier properties. If the gas barrier property of the substrate is too small, the organic electroluminescent element may be deteriorated by the outside air that has passed through the substrate, which is not preferable. For this reason, a method of providing a gas barrier property by providing a dense silicon oxide film or the like on at least one surface of the synthetic resin substrate is also a preferable method.

[0034]
The fluorescent compound used for the light-emitting layer 5 must have a stable thin film shape, a high fluorescence yield in a solid state, and a compound that can efficiently transport holes and / or electrons. It is. Further, it is required to be a compound that is electrochemically and chemically stable and does not easily generate impurities as traps during production or use.
[0035]
Materials satisfying such conditions include metal complexes such as aluminum complexes of 8-hydroxyquinoline (JP 59-194393 A), metal complexes of 10-hydroxybenzo [h] quinoline (JP 6-322362 A). Gazette), bisstyrylbenzene derivatives (JP-A-1-245087, JP-A-2-222484), bisstyrylarylene derivatives (JP-A-2-247278), metal complexes of (2-hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazole ( JP-A-8-315983), silole derivatives and the like. These light emitting layer materials are usually laminated on the hole transport layer by a vacuum deposition method.
[0036]
Of the above-described hole transport layer materials, fluorescent aromatic amine compounds can also be used as the light emitting layer material.
[0037]
The film thickness of the light emitting layer 5 is usually 3 to 200 nm, preferably 5 to 100 nm.
[0038]
The light emitting layer 5 can also be formed by the same method as the hole transport layer 4, but usually a vacuum deposition method is used.
[0039]
For the purpose of improving the luminous efficiency of the device and changing the emission color, for example, doping a fluorescent dye for lasers such as coumarin with an aluminum complex of 8-hydroxyquinoline as a host material (J. Appl. Phys., Volume 65) , 3610, 1989). This doping technique can also be applied to the light emitting layer 5, and various fluorescent dyes can be used as a doping material in addition to coumarin. Examples of fluorescent dyes that emit blue light include perylene, pyrene, anthracene, and derivatives thereof. Examples of the green fluorescent dye include quinacridone derivatives and coumarin derivatives. Examples of yellow fluorescent dyes include rubrene and perimidone derivatives. Examples of red fluorescent dyes include benzopyran derivatives such as DCM, rhodamine derivatives, benzothioxanthene derivatives, azabenzothioxanthene and the like.
[0040]
In addition to the above-mentioned fluorescent dyes for doping, depending on the host material, Laser Research, Vol. 8, p. 694,
Fluorescent dyes listed on pages 803 and 958 (1980); Volume 9, page 85 (1981) can be used as a doping material for the light emitting layer.
[0041]
The amount of the fluorescent dye doped with respect to the host material is 10-3~ 10 wt% is preferred.
[0042]
A method for doping the above-described fluorescent dye into the host material of the light emitting layer 5 will be described below.
[0043]
In the case of coating, the host material and the fluorescent dye for doping are added, and if necessary, additives such as a binder resin that does not become an electron trap or a light quenching quencher, and a coating property improving agent such as a leveling agent are added and dissolved. The applied coating solution is prepared, applied onto the hole transport layer 4 by a method such as spin coating, and dried to form the light emitting layer 5. Examples of the binder resin include polycarbonate, polyarylate, and polyester. When the amount of the binder resin added is large, the hole / electron mobility is lowered.
[0044]
In the case of the vacuum evaporation method, the host material is put in a crucible installed in a vacuum vessel, the fluorescent dye to be doped is put in another crucible, and the inside of the vacuum vessel is filled with an appropriate vacuum pump.-6After evacuating to about Torr, each crucible is heated and evaporated simultaneously to form a layer on the substrate placed facing the crucible. As another method, a mixture of the above materials in a predetermined ratio may be put in the same crucible and evaporated.
[0045]
When the above-described fluorescent dye as a dopant is doped in the light emitting layer, it is uniformly doped in the film thickness direction of the light emitting layer 5, but there may be a concentration distribution in the film thickness direction. For example, doping may be performed only in the vicinity of the interface with the hole transport layer 4, or conversely, doping may be performed only in the vicinity of the interface of the hole blocking layer 6 described later.
[0046]
A hole blocking layer 6 is provided on the light emitting layer 5. The hole blocking layer 6 has a role of blocking holes moving from the hole transport layer 4 from reaching the cathode 8 and efficiently injects electrons injected from the electron transport layer 7 toward the light emitting layer 5. The layer is formed of a compound that can be transported, and has an ionization potential of 0.1 eV higher than the ionization potential of the light emitting layer 5. The hole blocking layer 6 needs to have a wider band gap than the light emitting layer material in order to confine excitons generated by recombination in the light emitting layer 5 in the light emitting layer. The band gap in this case is determined from the difference between the oxidation potential and the reduction potential determined electrochemically or from the light absorption edge. The hole blocking layer 6 has a function of confining both charge carriers and excitons in the light emitting layer 5 to improve the light emission efficiency.
[0047]
As the hole blocking layer material satisfying such conditions, mixed ligand complexes, metal complexes such as binuclear metal complexes, styryl compounds such as distyrylbiphenyl derivatives (Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 11-242996), 3- (4- Triazole derivatives such as biphenylyl) -4-phenyl-5- (4-tert-butylphenyl) -1,2,4-triazole (JP-A-7-41759), phenanthroline derivatives such as bathocuproine (JP-A-10- 79297).

In addition, although the exemplary compounds of the above-mentioned distyrylarylene derivative, triazole derivative, and phenanthroline derivative are not described in the structural formula, the aromatic ring in each compound may be further substituted. Is, for example, an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms such as a methyl group, an ethyl group or a butyl group; an alkoxide group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms such as a methoxy group, an ethoxy group or a butoxy group; a halogen atom; .

These compounds may be used alone or in combination of two or more as required.
[0063]
The film thickness of the hole blocking layer 6 is usually 0.3 to 100 nm, preferably 0.5 to 50 nm.
[0064]
Such a hole blocking layer 6 can also be formed by a method similar to that of the hole transporting layer 4, but a vacuum deposition method is usually used.
[0065]
An electron transport layer 7 is provided on the hole blocking layer 6 for the purpose of further improving the luminous efficiency of the device. The electron transport layer 7 is formed of a compound capable of efficiently transporting electrons injected from the cathode 8 between the electrodes to which an electric field is applied in the direction of the light emitting layer 5. The electron transport layer 7 has an effect of preventing excitons generated by recombination in the light emitting layer 5 from diffusing and being quenched at the cathode 8.

Materials satisfying such conditions include metal complexes such as aluminum complexes of 8-hydroxyquinoline (JP 59-194393 A), metal complexes of 10-hydroxybenzo [h] quinoline, oxadiazole derivatives, Styryl biphenyl derivative, silole derivative, 3- or 5-hydroxyflavone metal complex, benzoxazole metal complex, benzothiazole metal complex, trisbenzimidazolylbenzene (US Pat. [0068]
Among these substances, oxadiazole derivatives, quinoxaline derivatives, and phenanthroline derivatives, especially low molecular weight compounds having a molecular weight of less than 400, exhibit high electron mobility but are used alone for reasons such as low Tg and easy crystallization. It was difficult. A metal complex such as an aluminum complex of 8-hydroxyquinoline is a substance that has good sublimation properties and excellent film quality after vacuum deposition, but its electron mobility is compared with that of a hole-transporting substance. However, it was not as low as two digits.
[0069]
In the present invention, the electron transport layer has a molecular weight of 400 to 800, preferably a molecular weight of 400 to 800 represented by an aluminum complex of 8-hydroxyquinoline.aluminumBy using a complex as a host material and a low molecular weight compound having a molecular weight of less than 400, preferably 130 to 399 as a dopant material, it is possible to achieve both high electron mobility and excellent film quality.
[0070]
In the present invention, if the proportion of the dopant material doped in the electron transport layer is small, high electron mobility cannot be obtained, and conversely if too much, the film quality becomes inferior. Is preferably a molar ratio of host material: dopant material = 99: 1 to 50:50.

[0081]
In addition, the electron mobility of the host material and dopant material of an electron carrying layer is measured using a Time-of-flight (TOF) method. The TOF method measures charge carrier mobility by irradiating the sample surface with pulsed light while applying an electric field to the measurement sample, and measuring the transient photocurrent generated by the generated charge carriers moving through the thin film. It is a method to do. At this time, the absolute value of mobility differs depending on the strength of the applied electric field and the state of the sample (whether it is made of a single compound or dispersed in a binder resin), but the electrons of the host material and the dopant material are different. It is sufficient that the relative magnitude relationship of the mobility satisfies the relationship of the present invention.

The thickness of the electron transport layer 6 is usually 5 to 200 nm, preferably 10 to 100 nm.
[0083]
The electron transport layer 7 is formed by laminating on the light emitting layer 5 by a coating method or a vacuum deposition method in the same manner as the light emitting layer 5. Usually, a vacuum deposition method is used.
[0084]
In the case of the vacuum vapor deposition method, as in the vapor deposition of the light emitting layer 5, the metal complex as the host material is placed in a crucible installed in a vacuum vessel, and an oxadiazole derivative or quinoxaline as a dopant material to be co-deposited. A substance selected from a derivative and a phenanthroline derivative is put in another crucible.-6After evacuation to about Torr, each crucible is heated and evaporated at the same time, and the electron transport layer 7 is formed on the substrate placed facing the crucible. As another method, a mixture of the above materials in a predetermined ratio may be evaporated using the same crucible.
[0085]
At this time, co-evaporation is uniformly performed in the film thickness direction of the electron transport layer 7, but there may be a concentration distribution of the dopant material in the film thickness direction.

According to the organic electroluminescent device of the present invention, since the electron transport layer contains a low molecular weight compound such as an oxadiazole derivative, a quinoxaline derivative, or a phenanthroline derivative having a high electron transport ability and a metal complex having a good film quality, Excellent stability and current can be efficiently injected. As a result, recombination of holes and electrons occurs effectively in the light emitting layer, and a device with high light emission efficiency can be obtained. Further, when a hole blocking layer is provided, light emission from only the light emitting layer can be obtained, and a light emitting element with high color purity can be obtained.

Next, as the material for the light-emitting layer 5, an aluminum 8-hydroxyquinoline complex (EM-1) having the structural formula shown below and a benzopyran derivative (DYE-1) of an orange fluorescent dye having the structural formula shown below are used. Similarly, co-evaporation was performed on the hole transport layer 4 at a ratio of EM-1: DYE-1 = 100: 1. The temperature of the crucible at this time was controlled in the range of 285 to 294 ° C and 314 to 317 ° C, respectively. Vacuum degree during deposition is 7.0 × 10-7Torr (approximately 9.3 × 10-FivePa), the deposition rate of EM-1 and DYE-1 is

[0105]
Subsequently, the above-described 8-hydroxyquinoline complex of aluminum (EM-1) and the following oxadiazole derivative (ET-1) are similarly formed on the hole blocking layer 6 as materials for the electron transport layer 7. (EM-1) :( ET-1) = 95: 5 (molar ratio). At this time, the temperature of the crucible was controlled in the range of 298 to 308 ° C. and 118 to 121 ° C., respectively. Degree of vacuum during deposition is 6.0 × 10-7Torr (about 8.0 × 10-FivePa), EM-1 and ET-1 were deposited at a rate of 0.13 nm / second, and an electron transport layer 7 having a thickness of 35 nm was formed.

[0107]
In addition, the electron mobility measured by TOF method of EM-1 which is host material, and ET-1 which is dopant material satisfies the conditions of this invention.
[0108]
The substrate temperature from the anode buffer layer 3 to the electron transport layer 7 was vacuum-deposited at room temperature.
[0109]
Here, the element that has been deposited up to the electron transport layer 7 is once taken out from the vacuum deposition apparatus into the atmosphere, and a 2 mm wide striped shadow mask is used as a cathode deposition mask. Installed in a separate vacuum deposition device in close contact with the element so as to be orthogonal, the degree of vacuum in the device is 2 × 10 like the organic layer.-6Torr (about 2.7 x 10-FourPa) exhausted until below. As the cathode 8, first, magnesium fluoride (MgF2) Using a molybdenum boat, the deposition rate is 0.1 nm / second, the degree of vacuum is 6.0 × 10-6Torr (about 8.0 × 10-FourPa), a film having a thickness of 1.5 nm was formed on the electron transport layer 7. Next, the aluminum is similarly heated by a molybdenum boat, and the deposition rate
0.4nm / sec, degree of vacuum 1.0 × 10-FiveTorr (about 1.3 × 10-3An aluminum layer with a thickness of 40 nm was formed by Pa). Furthermore, to increase the conductivity of the cathode, copper is heated using a molybdenum boat as well, and the deposition rate is increased.
0.5nm / sec, degree of vacuum 8.0 × 10-6Torr (approximately 1.1 × 10-3The cathode 8 was completed by forming a copper layer with a thickness of 40 nm by Pa). The substrate temperature at the time of vapor deposition of the above three-layer cathode 8 was kept at room temperature.
[0110]
As described above, an organic electroluminescence device having a light emitting area portion of 2 mm × 2 mm in size was produced. The light emission characteristics of this device are shown in Table 1. In Table 1, the luminance is 250mA / cm2The current density value and luminous efficiency are
100cd / m2Value, brightness / current is the slope of brightness-current density characteristics, voltage is 100cd / m2The values at are shown respectively. Table 1 shows the peak maximum wavelength of the EL spectrum and the CIE chromaticity coordinate value (JISZ8701).
[0111]
Even after the device was stored for a long time, the driving voltage was not significantly increased, and the light emitting efficiency and the luminance were not decreased, and stable storage stability of the device was obtained. In addition, even after being allowed to stand for 96 hours at a temperature of 60 ° C. and a humidity of 90%, the change in the light emission characteristics was not a problem in practice.
