【発明の属する技術分野】
本発明は、一般的に情報処理システムの分野に係わり、特に番組の優先的な視聴のための電子番組ガイドに関する。

【従来の技術】
番組視聴環境を改良するために情報処理システムとテレビジョンシステムが結合された統合システムでは、ユーザが予定された番組に従って夫々の視聴習慣を変更できるよう、予定された番組情報を決定するために電子番組ガイド（ＥＰＧ）、が度々使用される。

例えば、ユーザは夫々が好む番組を予定された放送時間に家で視聴できるように、その番組がいつ予定されているかを決定するために電子番組ガイドを使用し得る。ユーザが予定された時間に家にいることが出来ない場合、ユーザは番組を後で視聴するため、外出中にテレビジョン番組を録画するようにビデオカセット・レコーダ（ＶＣＲ）をプログラムできる。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかしながら、このようなシステムの一つの不都合な点は、ユーザが夫々視聴したいと望む番組のタイプを決定し、所望のタイプの番組の予定されている時間を検索するために電子番組ガイドをモニタし、その番組が録画されるべきかを決定し、その後に所望の番組を録画するのにＶＣＲを手でプログラムすることである。更に、番組を指定して番組のカスタム・ライブラリに保管することはユーザの責任である。従って、上述した機能を自動的に実行するシステムを提供することが非常に有利である。

【課題を解決するための手段】
本発明は、番組の優先視聴ライブラリを実行する方法に関する。一実施例では、この方法は規準を満足させる番組を探すために電子番組データを検索する段階と、番組ガイド中の番組が規準を満たすか否かを判定する段階と、番組ガイド中の番組が規準を満たす場合には番組を所定の時間に録画することを予約する段階と、時間をモニタし現在の時間が所定の時間であるか否かを判定する段階と、現在の時間が所定の時間である場合には番組を録画する段階と、ユーザが番組ライブラリから番組を選択し適当な時間にこの録画された番組を視聴できるよう、録画された番組を番組ライブラリに体系化する段階とを有する。

本発明は更に、一つ以上の選択された番組の優先視聴を提供するシステムに適合される。一実施例において、システムは、情報処理システム上で命令プログラムを実行するプロセッサと、プロセッサに結合され命令プログラムを記憶するメモリと、プロセッサによって命令プログラムとして実行される電子番組ガイドと、情報処理システムに結合され電子番組ガイドによって制御可能な録画装置と、情報処理システムによって読取り可能な情報録画媒体とを有し、この情報録画媒体上には、一つ以上の番組が電子番組ガイドによって情報記憶媒体上の番組のライブラリの形で記録され、番組ガイドは所定の条件を満たす番組を探すために番組ガイドデータを検索し、番組を情報録画媒体上のライブラリに記録するよう適合されているシステム。

図１は、本発明による情報処理システム１００のブロック図を示している。本実施例では、プロセッサ１０２と、システムコントローラ１１２と、キャッシュ１１４と、データパスチップ１１８とは夫々ホストバス１１０に結合される。プロセッサ１０２は、４８６−タイプチップ、登録商標Ｐｅｎｔｉｕｍ、登録商標ＰｅｎｔｉｕｍＩＩ、登録商標ＰｅｎｔｉｕｍＩＩＩのようなマイクロプロセッサ等の適切なマイクロプロセッサである。キャッシュ１１４は、プロセッサ１０２に対して高速ローカルメモリデータ（一実施例では例えば、５１２ＫＢのデータ）を提供し、システムコントローラ１１２によって制御され、このシステムコントローラ１１２はキャッシュ１１４にデータが置かれた直後（即ち近い将来）に使用されることが予想されるデータでキャッシュ１１４をロードする。メインメモリ１１６はシステムコントローラ１１２とデータパスチップ１１８との間に結合され、一実施例では１６ＭＢ乃至１２８ＭＢのデータのランダムアクセスメモリを提供する。

一人以上のユーザが同じ情報処理システム１００及び番組ガイド３１０を共用する場合、各ユーザは番組ガイド３１０によって一意に識別され得、データベース３１８の中に関連したユーザプロファイルが記憶され得る。ユーザは、番組ガイド３１０が数人のユーザの間で区別できるよう番組ガイド３１０の中に識別情報３１６を入力し得る。ユーザは、ユーザ個人を一意に識別するために、例えば、単に名前を入力してもよく、又、コード或いはパスワードを入力してもよく、情報処理システム１００で動作する音声認識ソフトウェアを使用して自動的に認識される名前、コード又はパスワードを吹き込んでもよく、情報処理システム１００に結合されたカメラ（例えば、電荷結合素子、又は、ＣＣＤ）を用いてユーザのビデオイメージを捕捉することでユーザの顔又は他の特徴を認識してもよく、又は、リモートコントローラ上のタッチパッド等を通じ指紋認識技術を使用して指紋を認識してもよい。一旦ユーザが識別されると、ユーザのプロファイルデータベース３１８の中に記憶されたユーザプロファイルを発生させるためにユーザの視聴習慣が電子番組ガイド３１０によってモニタされ得る。選択的に、ユーザの選択規準が選択規準データベース３２０の中に記憶され得るように、ユーザは番組ガイド３１０にモニタされることを望む番組のカテゴリの種類を手で入力してもよい。

ユーザプロファイルが発生され、ユーザプロファイルデータベース３１８の中に記憶された後、又は、ユーザが番組選択規準を選択規準データベース３２０の中に入力し記憶した後、番組ガイド３１０はユーザプロファイルデータベース３１８の中に記憶された番組のカテゴリの種類内に入る番組、又は、選択規準データベース３２０の中に記憶された情報に従って、番組ガイドデータ３１２をモニタする。ユーザプロファイルプログラムに類似するか、ユーザの選択規準を満たすと判定された番組が番組ガイドデータベース３１２で見つけられたとき、番組ガイド３１０は番組の予定された放送時間に録画される番組を予約する。予約された時間では、番組ガイド３１０は選択された録画装置３２２を用いて番組を録画する。録画装置３２２は、情報処理システム１００と結合された一つ以上の適切な番組録画装置又はシステムを含み得る。

例えば、録画装置３２２は、ビデオカセットレコーダ（ＶＣＲ）３２６と、書き込み可能な光学媒体ドライブ３２８と、フロッピーディスクドライブ３３０と、ハードディスクドライブ３３２と、メモリコントローラ３３４とを有し得、番組を夫々対応するビデオカセット３３６、録画可能なディジタル・バーサタイルディスク（ＤＶＤ）３３８、録画可能なＣＤ−ＲＯＭ３４０、フロッピーディスク３４２、ハードディスク３４４又は半導体メモリ３４６のような録画媒体に録画する。一つ以上のプログラムが記憶される一つ以上の媒体は、ユーザが後の時間に視聴できるユーザカスタマイズプログラムのライブラリ３２４を有する。例えば、ユーザはバレンタインデーのような特別な行事に視聴するためにロマンチックな番組のライブラリを確立することを望んでもよい。ユーザは、ロマンチックな番組を選択規準として選択規準データベース３２０の中に入力する。ユーザは、ロマンチックな番組が遅くともバレンタインデーには視聴できることを知っているため、２月１４日当日若しくはその前に放送された全ての番組は、別の規準として設定され得る。番組ガイド３１０は、選択規準データベース３２０からロマンチックな番組ガイドを引出し、ロマンチックな番組規準を満たす番組を探すために番組ガイドデータ３１２をモニタする。

番組ガイド３１０が番組ガイドデータ３１２においてロマンチックな番組規準（例えば、「ロミオとジュリエット」、「カサブランカ」等）を満たす一つ以上の番組を識別したとき、更に、番組が２月１４日の規準よりも前に放送されることが決定されたとき、番組ガイド３１０は識別された番組又は複数の番組の録画を予約する。番組ガイド３１０は、予定された放送時間に番組を対応する録画装置３２２を用いて適当な媒体３３６乃至３４６に録画し、番組ライブラリ３２４の中の番組をロマンチックな番組のカテゴリとして記憶する。これらは全て、ユーザが所望の選択規準を選択規準データベース３２０の中に入力した後、ユーザに介入されること無く行なわれる。

別の実施例において、番組ガイド３１０は、ユーザが識別された番組の録画が望ましいか否かを確定し得るよう番組が録画の予約をされる前にユーザに警告する。ユーザは、情報処理システム１００を介して番組ガイド３１０によって生成されたアラームで警告され得る。選択的に、ユーザが遠隔地にいる場合、番組ガイド３１０は追加的な情報処理システム１００を使用しワールドワイドネットワーク２２２を介してこの追加的な情報処理システム１００と結合することでユーザと離れていても接触できる。従って、ユーザは自宅を拠点とした情報処理システム１００で動作される番組ガイド３１０からインターネットを介して通信を受信し得る一方で、識別された番組を仕事中に確定するために情報処理システム１００を動作できる。ユーザは２月１４日に帰宅するとライブラリ３２４の中に記憶された番組を再生し、録画されたロマンチックな番組を視聴出来る。

図４を参照するに、本発明による優先視聴システムを実行する段階のフローチャートが詳述される。好ましい実施例における段階４００は、情報処理システム１００のための命令プログラムとして実行される番組ガイド３１０を用いて構築される。段階４００は、ステップ４１０におけるユーザの選択から始まる。ステップ４１２において、ユーザプロファイルデータベース３１８に新ユーザを追加するか否かの判定が行われる。新ユーザが追加される場合には、ステップ４４８において、新ユーザプロファイルが形成され、ユーザプロファイルデータベース３１８に記憶される。新ユーザプロファイルがプロファイルデータベース３１８に追加された後、ステップ４１０において、新ユーザが選択可能となる。ステップ４１４において、ユーザのプロファイルが選択されることでステップ４１６において、ユーザの視聴活動がモニタされる。ステップ４１８において、ユーザの視聴活動がユーザプロファイルデータベース３１８の中に保存される。ステップ４２０において、ユーザ選択された規準が番組ガイドデータ３１２を検索するベースとなるか否かの判定がなされる。

ユーザ選択された規準が利用される場合、ステップ４２８において、ユーザは番組基準を入力し、ステップ４３０において、ユーザ選択された規準は選択規準データベース３２０の中に保存される。ステップ４２２において、電子番組ガイドデータ３１２がユーザプロファイルデータベース３１８又は選択規準データベース３１８のいずれか、或いは双方の組合わせに基づいて検索され、ステップ４２４において、ユーザプロファイル又はユーザ選択規準を満たす番組が番組ガイドデータ３１２において識別されるか否かの判定がなされる。

番組が識別されない場合には、ＥＰＧデータ３１２はユーザプロファイル又はユーザ選択規準を満たす番組が番組ガイドデータ３１２の中で識別されるまでステップ４２２において（例えば、周期的に又は番組ガイドデータ３１２の更新を受信する際に）検索され続ける。番組が識別された場合には、ステップ４２６において、番組の録画時間が予定される。ステップ４３２において、番組ガイド３１０は時間をモニタすることでステップ４３４において、予定された番組時間に達したか否かの判定がなされる。予定された番組時間に達した場合には、ステップ４３６において、番組ガイド３１０は識別された番組が録画直前であることをユーザに通知し得る。通知された際に、ユーザは識別された番組の録画を確定するよう選択してもよく、又は、番組を録画しないことを選択してもよい。

ステップ４３８において、識別された番組が録画されるよう確定するか否かの判定がなされる。番組の録画が確定された場合には、ステップ４４０において、番組は録画される。ステップ４４２において、番組は番組ライブラリ３２４の中に体系化され、例えば、内容に基づいてカテゴリ化される。ステップ４４４において、ユーザはライブラリ３２４からカテゴリを選択し、ステップ４４６においてライブラリ３２４の中に記憶された番組例えば、内容別のカテゴリで体系化された番組を視聴する。

本発明は、ある程度詳細に説明されているが、本発明の要素は本発明の精神及び範囲から逸脱することなく当業者によって変更され得ることが認識されるべきである。本発明の一つの実施例は、図１に示された一般的に構成された一つ以上のコンピュータ情報処理システムのメインメモリ１１６に存在する命令のセットとして記憶され得る。コンピュータシステムによって要求されるまで、命令のセットは図１の情報記憶媒体１５９、例えばハードディスクドライブの中、又は、CD-ROMで利用される光学ディスクのような出し入れ可能なメモリ、フロッピーディスクドライブで利用されるフロッピーディスク、フロプティカルドライブで利用されるフロプティカルディスク、又はパーソナルコンピュータカードスロットで利用されるパーソナルコンピュータメモリカードのようなコンピュータ読取り可能メモリの中に記憶され得る。

更に、命令のセットは別のコンピュータのメモリの中に記憶され得、ユーザに望まれるときローカルネットワーク又はインターネットのような広域ネットワークを通じて伝送され得る。追加的に、情報はアプレット（別のアプリケーション内から実行されるプログラム）又は、コンピュータシステムへの伝送前よりも伝送後に解釈又はコンパイルされるサーバレット（サーバによって実行されるアプレット）の形態でネットワークを通じて伝送され得る。当業者は、アプレット又はサーバレットのような命令のセットの物理的な記憶が、それらを電気的、磁気的、化学的、物理的、光学的又はホログラフィック的に記憶する媒体がコンピュータによって読取り可能な情報を伝送するように、これらの媒体を物理的に変化することを認識する。

Claims (8)

  1. ユーザの視聴活動をモニタして得られるユーザ視聴情報及びユーザにより選択されるユーザ選択規準情報のうち少なくともいずれかをデータベースに保存する段階と、
    前記データベースに保存された前記ユーザ視聴情報又は前記ユーザ選択規準情報を規準として用い、前記規準を満たす番組を探すために電子番組ガイドを検索する段階と、
    上記番組ガイド中の番組が上記規準を満たすか否かを判定する段階と、
    上記番組ガイド中の上記番組が上記規準を満たす場合には、上記番組を所定の時間に録画することを自動的に予約する段階と、
    上記時間をモニタし、現在の時間が上記所定の時間であるか否かを判定する段階と、
    上記番組が録画されることを通信ネットワークを通じてユーザに通知する段階と、
    上記通知する段階の後に、上記番組が録画されるべきか否かを確定する段階と、
    上記番組を録画すべきことが確定され、上記現在の時間が上記所定の時間である場合には、上記番組を自動的に録画する段階と、
    ユーザが番組ライブラリから上記番組を選択し適当な時間に上記録画された番組を視聴できるよう、上記録画された番組を上記番組ライブラリに体系化する段階とを有する、番組の優先視聴用ライブラリを構築する方法。
  2. 二人以上のユーザがいる場合には、上記二人以上のユーザの中から一人を選択する段階と、
    上記選択されたユーザの視聴活動をモニタする段階と、
    上記選択されたユーザの上記視聴活動を上記選択されたユーザに固有のデータベースに保存する段階と、
    上記データベースに記録された上記選択されたユーザの上記視聴活動に基づいて上記検索段階、及び、上記判定段階を実行する段階とを更に有する請求項１記載の方法。
  3. 二人以上のユーザがいる場合には、上記二人以上のユーザの中から一人を選択する段階と、
    上記選択されたユーザからユーザ選択規準を受ける段階と、
    上記ユーザ選択規準を上記選択されたユーザに固有のデータベースに保存する段階と、
    上記データベースに記録された上記ユーザ選択規準に基づいて上記検索段階、及び、上記判定段階を実行する段階とを更に有する請求項１記載の方法。
  4. 情報処理システムに番組の優先視聴用ライブラリを構築する段階を実行させる命令プログラムが記録された情報処理システムによって読取り可能な記録媒体であって、上記構築する段階は、
    ユーザの視聴活動をモニタして得られるユーザ視聴情報及びユーザにより選択されるユーザ選択規準情報のうち少なくともいずれかをデータベースに保存する段階と、
    前記データベースに保存した前記ユーザ視聴情報又は前記ユーザ選択規準情報を規準として用い、前記規準を満たす番組を探すために電子番組ガイドデータを検索する段階と、
    上記番組ガイド中の番組が上記規準を満たすか否かを判定する段階と、
    上記番組ガイドが上記規準を満たす場合には、上記番組を所定の時間に録画することを自動的に予約する段階と、
    上記時間をモニタし、現在の時間が上記所定の時間であるか否かを判定する段階と、
    上記番組が録画されることを通信ネットワークを通じてユーザに通知する段階と、
    上記通知する段階の後に、上記番組が録画されるべきか否かを確定する段階と、
    上記番組を録画すべきことが確定され、上記現在の時間が上記所定の時間である場合には、上記番組を自動的に録画する段階と、
    ユーザが番組ライブラリから上記番組を選択し適当な時間に上記録画された番組を視聴できるよう、上記録画された番組を上記番組ライブラリに体系化する段階とを有する記録媒体。
  5. 二人以上のユーザがいる場合には、上記二人以上のユーザの中から一人を選択する段階と、
    上記選択されたユーザの視聴活動をモニタする段階と、
    上記選択されたユーザの視聴活動を上記選択されたユーザに固有のデータベースに保存する段階と、
    上記データベースに記録された上記選択されたユーザの視聴活動に基づいて上記検索段階、及び、上記判定段階を実行する段階とを更に有する請求項４記載の記録媒体。
  6. 二人以上のユーザがいる場合には、上記二人以上のユーザの中から一人を選択する段階と、
    上記選択選択されたユーザからユーザ選択規準を受ける段階と、
    上記ユーザ選択規準を上記選択されたユーザに固有のデータベースに保存する段階と、
    上記データベースに記録された上記ユーザ選択規準に基づいて上記検索段階、及び、上記判定段階を実行する段階とを更に有する請求項４記載の記録媒体。
  7. 情報処理システム上で命令プログラムを実行するプロセッサと、
    上記プロセッサに結合され上記命令プログラムを記録するメモリと、
    上記メモリに記録された、ユーザの視聴活動をモニタして得られるユーザプロファイルが記録されたユーザプロファイルデータベースと、
    上記メモリに記録された、ユーザにより選択されたユーザ選択規準が記録されたユーザ選択規準データベースと、
    上記プロセッサによって上記命令プログラムとして実行される電子番組ガイドと、
    上記情報処理システムに結合され上記電子番組ガイドによって制御可能な録画装置と、
    上記情報処理システムによって読取り可能な情報記録媒体とを有し、上記情報記録媒体上には、一つ以上の番組が電子番組ガイドによって上記情報記録媒体上の番組の体系化されたライブラリの形で記録され、
    上記番組ガイドは、上記ユーザプロファイルデータベースに記憶されたユーザプロファイル又は上記ユーザ選択規準データベースに記録されたユーザ選択規準を所定の条件として用い、前記所定の条件を満たす番組を探すために番組ガイドデータを検索し、上記番組が録画されることを通信ネットワークを通じてユーザに通知し、通知をした後に、上記番組が録画されるべきか否かを確定し、上記番組を録画すべきことが確定された場合は、上記番組を上記情報記録媒体上の上記ライブラリに自動的に録画するよう適合されている、一つ以上の選択された番組の優先視聴を提供するシステム。
  8. 情報処理システム上で命令プログラムを実行する手段と、
    プロセッサに結合され、上記命令プログラムを記録する手段と、
    上記プロセッサによって上記命令プログラムとして実行され、上記システムを構築する手段と、
    上記情報処理システムに結合され上記構築手段によって制御可能な番組を録画する手段と、
    上記情報処理システムによって読取り可能な上記プログラムを記録する手段と、
    上記記録手段に記録されたデータを体系化する手段とを有し、上記記録手段上には、一つ以上の番組が上記構築手段によって番組のライブラリの形で記録され、上記体系化手段にはユーザの視聴活動をモニタして得られるユーザプロファイル及びユーザにより選択されたユーザ選択規準のうち少なくともいずれかが記録され、上記構築手段は前記ユーザプロファイル又は前記ユーザ選択規準を所定の条件として用い、前記所定の条件を満たす番組を探すために番組ガイドデータを検索し、上記番組が録画されることを通信ネットワークを通じてユーザに通知し、通知した段階の後に、上記番組が録画されるべきか否かを確定する段階と、上記番組を録画すべきことが確定された場合には上記番組を上記記録手段上の上記ライブラリに自動的に録画するよう適合されている、一つ以上の選択された番組の優先視聴を提供するシステム。
