Abstract

しかし、カプセル型電気泳動ディスプレイの耐用年数は、完全に望ましい年数よりも依然として低い。例えば、粒子は凝集してクラスターとなる傾向があり、これによって、その光学的状態の間でのディスプレイの切替のために必要とされる運動を粒子が完了することを妨げられるなどの要因によってこの耐用年数が限定されるようにみえる。電気泳動粒子の物理的特性および表面特徴は、様々な材料を粒子の表面に吸着させること、または様々な材料をこれらの表面に化学的に結合させることにより改変することができる。例えば、有機顔料を含有する電気泳動ディスプレイでは、異なる化学基を有するモノマーが分散重合により顔料上にポリマーコーティングを形成することができ、このコーティングは電荷制御剤と反応して、異なる電荷強度の着色粒子を提供することができる。しかし、色の数が増加するにつれて、異なる色に着色されたポリマーコーティング顔料のいくつかは、コーティングポリマー構造の類似性により互いに分離するのが困難となり得ることが観察された。代替のアプローチは無機の色顔料を使用することであるが、有機顔料の色の強度および輝度は無機顔料より優れている。有機顔料が好ましいことから、複数の着色有機粒子を含有する電気泳動媒体を含む改善された電気光学ディスプレイに対する必要性が存在する。
本発明の1つの態様に従い、電気泳動ディスプレイ媒体は、前方電極および後方電極と、前方電極と後方電極との間に配置された、複数の顔料を含有するカプセル型分散流体とを含む。前方電極および後方電極の少なくとも1つは透明であってよい。複数の顔料は、第1および第2の種類の有機顔料粒子を含む。第1の種類の有機顔料粒子は、第1の色および第1の帯電極性を有することができる。第2の種類の有機顔料粒子は、第1の色とは異なる第2の色および第1の帯電極性と同じ第2の帯電極性を有することができる。第1および第2の種類の有機顔料粒子の少なくとも1つは、シリカコーティングおよびこのシリカコーティングに結合したポリマー安定剤を含む。
以下の詳細な記載では、多くの特定の詳細は、関連する教示の十分な理解をもたらすために例として記載されている。しかし、本発明の教示はこのような詳細なしに実施することができることは当業者に明らかなはずである。
RmO−−[−−CH2CH2O−−]n−−CH2−フェニル−CH=CH2;または

置換基Rはポリエチレン鎖であってよく、nは1〜60であり、mは1〜500である。これらの化合物の合成は、Dongri Chaoら、Polymer Journal、23巻、9号、1045頁(1991年)およびKoichi Itoら、Macromolecules、1991年、24巻、2348頁に見出すことができる。さらなる種類の適切なマクロモノマーは以下に示されているようなPEマクロモノマーである:

Claims (20)
- 少なくとも1つが透明である前方電極および後方電極と、
前記前方電極と後方電極との間に配置された、複数の顔料を含有するカプセル型分散流体であって、前記複数の顔料が第1および第2の種類の有機顔料粒子を含み、前記第1の種類の有機顔料粒子が第1の色および第1の帯電極性を有し、前記第2の種類の有機顔料粒子が第2の色および第2の帯電極性を有し、前記第1の色と第2の色が異なり、前記第1および第2の帯電極性が同じであり、前記第1および第2の種類の有機顔料粒子の少なくとも1つが、シリカコーティングおよび前記シリカコーティングに結合したポリマー安定剤を含む、カプセル型分散流体と
を含む、電気泳動ディスプレイ。 - 前記第1および第2の種類の有機顔料が、PB15:1、PB15:2、PB15:3、PB15:4、PR254、PR122、PR149、PG36、PG58、PG7、PY138、PY150、PY151、PY154およびPY20からなる群から独立して選択される有機コアを含む、請求項1に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記第1および第2の種類の有機顔料が、赤色、緑色、青色、シアン、マゼンタ、または黄色に独立して着色されている、請求項2に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記複数の顔料が、少なくとも1種類の無機顔料粒子をさらに含む、請求項1に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記無機顔料粒子が、金属酸化物、マンガンフェライトブラック、銅クロマイトブラックスピネル、カーボンブラック、硫化亜鉛、およびこれらの組合せからなる群から選択される、請求項4に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記複数の顔料が、第3の色および第3の帯電極性を有する第3の種類の有機顔料をさらに含み、前記第3の色が前記第1および第2の色と異なり、前記第3の帯電極性が前記第1および第2の帯電極性と異なる、請求項1に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記第1、第2および第3の種類の有機顔料が、PB15:1、PB15:2、PB15:3、PB15:4、PR254、PR122、PR149、PG36、PG58、PG7、PY138、PY150、PY151、PY154およびPY20からなる群から独立して選択される、請求項6に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ媒体。
- 前記第1および第2の種類の有機顔料が、赤色、緑色、青色、シアン、マゼンタ、または黄色に独立して着色されている、請求項7に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記複数の顔料が、少なくとも1種類の無機顔料粒子をさらに含む、請求項6に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記ポリマー安定剤が、前記シリカコーティングに共有結合したシラン基を有するシランカップリング基と共有結合している、請求項1に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記ポリマー安定剤が、モノマーまたはマクロモノマーから誘導される、請求項10に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記モノマーが、スチレン、アルファメチルスチレン、アクリル酸メチル、メタクリル酸メチル、アクリル酸n−ブチル、メタクリル酸n−ブチル、アクリル酸t−ブチル、メタクリル酸t−ブチル、ビニルピリジン、n−ビニルピロリドン、アクリル酸2−ヒドロキシエチル、メタクリル酸2−ヒドロキシエチル、メタクリル酸ジメチルアミノエチル、アクリル酸ラウリル、メタクリル酸ラウリル、アクリル酸2−エチルヘキシル、メタクリル酸2−エチルヘキシル、アクリル酸ヘキシル、メタクリル酸ヘキシル、アクリル酸n−オクチル、メタクリル酸n−オクチル、アクリル酸n−オクタデシル、メタクリル酸n−オクタデシル、アクリル酸2−パーフルオロブチルエチル、メタクリル酸2,2,2トリフルオロエチル、メタクリル酸2,2,3,3テトラフルオロプロピル、1,1,1,3,アクリル酸3,3−ヘキサフルオロイソプロピル、メタクリル酸1,1,1,3,3,3−ヘキサフルオロイソプロピル、アクリル酸2,2,3,3,3−ペンタフルオロプロピル、アクリル酸2,2,3,3−テトラフルオロプロピル、メタクリル酸2,2,3,4,4,4−ヘキサフルオロブチル、およびメタクリル酸2,2,3,3,4,4,4−ヘプタフルオロブチルからなる群から選択される、請求項11に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記マクロモノマーが、アクリレート基、ビニル基、またはこれらの組合せからなる群から選択される末端官能基を含有する、請求項11に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記ポリマー安定剤が、シラン基を有するシランカップリング剤にイオン結合し、前記シラン基が前記シリカコーティングに共有結合している、請求項1に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記ポリマー安定剤が、ラジカル重合性基を含有するモノマーまたはマクロモノマーから誘導される、請求項14に記載の電気泳動ディスプレイ。
