Abstract
Description
微粒子の凝集を抑制する為に石炭由来の固形炭素質物質と共に分散剤を用いてもよい。非限定的な一実施形態では、分散剤は、有機酸である。分散剤は、直鎖状、環状、飽和型、不飽和型のカルボン酸およびポリカルボン酸から選択された有機酸であってよい。現在の好適な一実施形態では、分散剤は、クエン酸である。非限定的な一実施形態では、分散剤は、リグノスルホネートをベースとする界面活性剤である。使用され得る別の分散剤には、ポリエチレンオキシド分散剤などの非イオン性分散剤が含まれる。
非限定的な一実施形態では、固形燃料粒子は、30μm未満のサイズと2780kcal/kg(5000Btu/lb)を超えるエネルギー密度を有する。別の非限定的な実施形態では、固形燃料粒子は、30μm未満のサイズと500kg/m3を超える密度とを有する。さらに別の非限定的な実施形態では、固形燃料粒子は、2780kcal/kg(5000Btu/Ib)を超えるエネルギー密度と500kg/m3を超える密度を有する。当然のことながら、固形燃料粒子のサイズ、エネルギー密度、および密度の値は、様々であり得る。例えば、瀝青炭は、ドライベースで、6950〜8339kcal/kg(12,500〜15,000Btu/Ib)のエネルギー密度を有するが、低いランクの石炭やバイオソリッドは、ドライベースで、5559〜7227kcal/kg(10,000〜13,000Btu/Ib)のエネルギー密度を有する。固形燃料に結合した水は、エネルギー密度を低下させる。部分的に酸化された固形燃料粒子は、酸化されていない燃料粒子に比べて低い燃料密度を有する。

石炭微粒子が穏やかな空気中でストークスの式から予測されるように沈降するか否かを調べる実験を計画した。最初に、石炭粒子を小さなサイクロンの中に通過させて所定のサイズを有する石炭微粒子を得た。サイクロンは、サイズに基づいて水流または空気流中の粒子を分級する為に使用される装置である。
より大きなサイクロンを粉末捕捉システムの一部として使用した。円錐の大きな寸法と小さな寸法はそれぞれ、27.5cm、7.3cmであった。サイクロンの高さは、61cmであった。図4は、サイクロンの底部の小さな開口部から出てきた大きな粒子と、サイクロンの頂部から出る空気流と共に運び出されてきた小さな粒子の粒子径によって区別した体積量を示すグラフである。平均粒子サイズはそれぞれ、21.4μm、6.2μmである。上記の実施例1において説明した小さなサイクロンを用いる実験で使用したものよりも大きな粒子を原料とした。平均粒子サイズを有する微粒子は、管の側壁に有意に沈降することなく、金属製の管内を約15m(50フィート)以上輸送された。管が静電荷のために微粒子の薄いフィルムでコートされると、損失は無視することができた。
