地球上でのソーラーパワー発生
ソーラーマイクロ波ファブリックを使用して電力を発生して、都市環境又は工業団地に位置する平均的なオフィスビルに電力供給することができる。米国での平均的なオフィスビルは、全床面積が約15,000平方フィートであり、年間17.3キロワット時の電力を使用する。これは29.6キロワットの平均電力消費量を意味する。これを単一のビルでの所要電力とする。この実施形態において、ビルの屋上又は隣接する駐車場にレクテナビーコンを配置することができる。従って、レクテナビーコンのサイズは、割り当てられる空間に起因して特に重要である。レクテナビーコンのサイズは、ソーラーパワー収集バルーンからの中心伝達信号の直径とする必要がある。マイクロ波領域の超低波長を用いると仮定した100メータのソーラーパワー収集バルーンに基づく計算では、ソーラーパワー収集バルーンは、地上に約3.5キロメートル信号を投射することになる。この信号サイズを仮定すると、この実施形態は、大型工業団地又は商業施設に最も適している。
本発明のこの実施形態は、電力伝達「アクティブ」モードを付加した内部トランシーバをさらに含み、それによってマイクロ波放射が、非共同ターゲットに送られ、ターゲットからの返答が高出力密度ビーコンの方向に関するビーコンとして使用される。
この出願において、ソーラーパワー収集バルーンは、退役衛星、使用済み上段等の低地球軌道のデブリに照射するために使用され、軌道上の速度を高層大気に入って燃えるまで放射圧で低減させるようになっている。

文明の繁栄は、有用なエネルギの源を利用するスキルに比例すると言われている。化石燃料の使用が環境への毒性によって制限されるか否かにかかわらず、文明の進歩には、現在利用可能なエネルギ源よりも実質的に強力なエネルギ源を必要とするだろう。地球の放射性同位元素の埋蔵量は別として、太陽によって生成される核融合を基礎としたエネルギの豊富な供給量は、効率的に利用され続けるだろう。宇宙では太陽の日射が連続的かつ大気による減衰がないため、宇宙における太陽放射の収集は、潜在的には地上における技術に比べて桁違いに効率的だろう。このような潜在的な利点が、1960年代初頭から宇宙太陽エネルギシステムを設計する努力の動機付けとなってきた。参考文献2には、以前に提案された設計についてのタイムリーかつ包括的な概観が与えられている。
太陽エネルギシステムは、太陽エネルギを収集し、このエネルギを放射(典型的には大気をほぼ透過する波長帯)に変換し、そして、放射を電力へと変換する地上設備へとこの放射を送信する宇宙セグメントから成り立っている。地上において電力を収集する技術はよく発達しているので、ここでは太陽エネルギ衛星(SPS)と呼ばれる宇宙セグメントに注目する。さらに、ここで想定する太陽エネルギ収集の方法はソーラーセルであり、地上への電力の送信には約10cmの波長を有するマイクロ波放射が選択される。

非常に新規かつ急速に進展しているパワースター(商標)技術の要素を図2に例示する。低価格ソーラーアレイの大規模生産は進行中である。印刷されるマイクロ波アンテナもよく知られており、数多くの通信用途において急速に進展している。ソーラーマイクロウェーブファブリック(商標)は、これら2つのコンポーネントを同じ柔軟性基板の表面において結びつける。図2の下部は、典型的な断面図を示している。ソーラーセル及びパッチアンテナは、格子状のローブ(lobe)を相殺するためにランダムなモザイク配列に点在されている(重ならないように)。このパターンは、基板シートすなわち「スキン」の外側表面となる側に印刷される。完全なシステムでは、反対表面(球体の内側面となる側)に印刷されたマイクロ波トランシーバ(受信機及び送信機)のみからなるアレイも存在することができる。外側表面のパッチアンテナは、近傍に隣接するソーラーセル(直径数センチメートル)の半分から又は内側のトランシーバからスキンの厚さを通して電力を取り出す。電力移転の詳細については、後述の「衛星間の電力配分」サブセクションで説明する。短い電力用リードに加えて、暖気的な接地及び放出前の球体の強化のための導電ワイヤのグリッドが存在する。このセクションでは、印刷されたソーラーセル、印刷されたマイクロ波アンテナ及び基板材料の選択について議論する。
現在、迅速な製造可能性がセルの効率とトレードオフの関係になっているソーラーセル印刷技術の領域が存在する。注目すべき例が、文献3において報告されている。ビクトリアン・オーガニック・ソーラーセル・コンソーシアムが、印刷ソーラーアレイを最大毎分10メートル、すなわち2秒毎に1セルの速度で製造する可能性を実証している。30センチメートルまでの幅で、これらのセルは最大地上日射で1平方メートル当たり10〜15ワットの電力を生成する。基板には、紙の薄さの柔軟なプラスチック又はスチールが含まれる。図3に示すように、これらのセルは、太陽光スペクトルの異なる部分から電力を補足するために、種々の有機材料を組み合わせる。

アンテナは、コットン・ポリエステル(cotton-polyester)を含む多くの柔軟性材料の上に印刷することができる。効率を向上させるために、多重印刷層を使用することができる。図4に示すように、マイクロ波パッチアンテナは、接地された誘電体の基板上に取り付けられた金属「パッチ」からなる。

L=λ/2 (1)としなければならない。ここで、λは作動波長である。大きい帯域幅とするためにWは通常1.5Lとされるが、ここではW=L=λ/2とする。実用的な印刷解像度は15ミクロンであり、十分な正確さで(1)式を満たすには十分である。表1は、既存のパッチアンテナ(文献5)に対する性能統計の調査結果を示す。現在のところ79%までの効率が達成可能である。
ソーラーセル及びパッチアンテナは広範囲の材料に印刷されてきたが、我々はエコー衛星技術に非常に密接に関連する2つの材料に焦点を当てる。最も重要かつ最も伝統的なものはマイラー(Mylar)、すなわち樹脂のポリエチレンテレフタレート(PET)から作られるポリエステルフィルムである。この材料は、−70℃から150℃までの温度範囲でその完全な機械的性能を保持する。その体積密度は1390Kg/m3である。代替物として魅力あるものは有機ポリマー材料のカプトン(Kapton)であり、これは−269℃から400℃の温度範囲で溶けず燃えず、良く機能する。体積密度は1420Kg/m3で、マイラーよりもわずかに大きい。継続的な研究によって、適度な引き裂き強度及び最小の密度を持った印刷に適合する材料が探し出されるだろう。
前のセクションで説明した多機能ファブリックのシートは、複数のゴア(球体の複数の部分)にカットされ、いくつかのゴアは組み合わされて球体バルーン(膨らませたときに)を形成する。この点を超えて、パワースター(商標)はエコー衛星技術を十分に利用する。

このセクションでは、パワースター(商標)システムの新しい要素と古い要素がどのように組み合わされ、打ち上げられ展開されてからシステムがどのように調整されて供に働くかについて説明する。図7は、全体構成及びオペレーションの方法の概略を示している。

前述の多くの送信機を調整するビーコンに基づく制御が、統計的な意味で、地上における所望のエネルギ配分を最適に近似することは、電磁伝搬における厳格な結果である。このエネルギ送達スキームは、逆方向ビーム技術の一般化であり、多くの領域に適用されてきた。例えば文献9では、医療技術のための音響学への適用が議論されている。
太陽とビーコンの向きは一致しないので、衛星内でエネルギを分散させる機構が必要となる。図10は、太陽及びビーコンからの照射の幾何学的配置を示しており、ここでビーコン同士の角度的間隔は非常に小さく単一の代表ビーコンの方向を考慮することができると仮定する。φは太陽の方向とビーコンの方向との角度である。球体の内側表面が高周波で作動するトランシーバがコーティングされていることに注意する(回折効果を低減するために)。これらのトランシーバは、直径方向に対向する各対の共鳴軸が平行となるように方向づけされる。

衛星の基本的な設計を説明してきたので、次にその性能の特性の分析、すなわち地上へのエネルギ伝送、ビーム幅等について別々の副題を付けて考える。
始めに、外側表面へのパッチアンテナの幾何学的に規則的な配置は、主たる集中化されたスポット(中央スポット)に加えて、いくつかの規則的に間隔を置いたオフセット・スポット(格子ローブ)を有する開口PSFを生成するだろう。これは、所望のエネルギ分布を近似することができる精度において悪い効果をもたらす傾向がある。これは、実際に生成される分布は所望の分布とPSFとのたたみ込み(convolution)だからである。しかしながら、送信機アンテナの配置における僅かなランダム化(単位面積当たりのアンテナの平均個数は同じ)は、放出された放射において中央のローブだけが唯一のエネルギ集中であり続けるように格子ローブを分散させるのに十分である。この場合、主たるローブは、パッチアンテナ位置の確立密度関数の特性関数(フーリエ変換)に比例する。例えば、パッチアンテナの位置が統計的に独立したガウス分布であったとすると、フェーズドアレイ全体で生成される放射エネルギの角度分布P(θ)(θの上にはバー)は、

平らで円形の開口フェーズドアレイを有する全てのSPSコンセプトに対して、地上での最小ビーム幅は、波長、距離及び送信開口直径(一般に、まばらなアレイの直径)の関数としてのレイリー(Rayleigh)の角解像度公式によって表現される。ここでは、開口がランダム化されたモザイク配列の球形であることから、これはわずかに修正され、その結果ビーム幅は減少する。式(2)と矛盾することなく、地上におけるエネルギ集中「スポット」の最小幅であるΔxは、近似的に

パワースターは、既存の打ち上げロケットのペイロードフェアリング内へ収納されるキャニスタに、コンパクトに折り畳まれて入れられる。ここでは、収容されたときの形状が、直径Dsの球形であると仮定する。wをスキンの厚さとすると、展開されたバルーンのスキンによって占められる全体積は、πDA 2wである。収容されたときに最も小さくなる直径は、この体積がπDs 3/6に等しくなったときである。しかしながら上で述べたように、何回も折り曲げられた薄い膜は、膜を構成する材料そのものの体積よりも大きな外形の体積を有する。そこで我々は、折り畳みシステムをパッキング効率peff≧1で特徴付ける。その結果、πDs 3/6=πDA 2wpeff、すなわち、

エコー衛星の場合のように、パワースターも、数十年よりも長い軌道寿命となるような空気力学的効果が軌道高度の限界を設定する非常に低い弾道係数(ballistic coefficient)を持つことになるだろう。この状況を分析するために、最初に円軌道を仮定する。10年よりも長い寿命に対して、円軌道の初期軌道半径の関数としての寿命は、太陽活動極大期又は太陽活動極小期に対する打ち上げ時期にはほぼ依存しない(文献10参照)。このため軌道寿命を、米国の標準大気によって与えられる高度の関数としての平均大気密度を用いて見積もることができる。さらに、減衰軌道はゆっくり変化する「瞬間的」な軌道半径を有するタイトな螺旋の形態を取るような、小さな流体抵抗を仮定することができる。

この論文で我々は、宇宙太陽エネルギ衛星に対する新たな設計コンセプト、すなわちパワースター(商標)を提案した。プロジェクト・エコーに遡る遺産と共に、このシステムは、薄く柔軟性のあるスキンから作られる膨張可能なバルーンであり、スキンの上に近代的な大量生産技術によってソーラーセル、マイクロ波パッチアンテナが印刷されている。パワースター(商標)は、動く部品も、回転又はその他の機械的の動きもなく作動する。少なくとも直径1kmまでは、軌道上での製造や建設も必要としない。先進の適応フェーズドアレイ技術、及び低振幅ビーコンと組み合わされた時間反転音響学からの知見は、全体が各パッチアンテナに局在するビームフォーミング制御アルゴリズムをもたらす。フェーズドアレイの動作は分散化され適応型であり、たとえ大きな損傷を受けても、システムはあるレベルの有用な性能を保持することができる。エネルギは、スキンを通しての伝送がせいぜい数センチメートル内で起こるようバルーン内で調整され、集中化の必要性及び高電圧電力分配システムをなくす。このエネルギシステムは、太陽エネルギを任意の角度から集め、回転や構造的変形を伴わずに任意の方向に送信する。
予備的な性能計算によって、現在利用可能な印刷されたソーラーセルの低い係数でも、1kmのパワースターであってもファーストレベニューシステムのために十分なエネルギを生成可能であることが示された。エコー技術を使用することで、1kmのパワースターをいくつかの既存の大重量ロケットでの打ち上げ用に収納することが可能である。最後に、弾道係数が小さいにもかかわらず、初期(円軌道)高度が約2000kmより大きければ、軌道寿命は世紀のオーダーとなる。

2)ソーラーパワー及び通信 − 項目(1)に通信用マイクロ波パッチアンテナを追加したもの
3)パワー/通信/伝送 − 項目(2)に、可撓性基材の両側にマイクロ波トランシーバを追加し、遠隔収集ステーションへのパワー伝送用のレトロディレクティブ・フェーズドアレイ機能を追加したものであって、収集ポイントにおいてマイクロ波ビーコンを用いる。これがPower Starのための実施形態である。ビーコンの使用は、ビーム方向及び整形の受動モードを構成する。
4)パワー/通信/防衛 − 印刷された片面又は両面を有する項目(3)に「能動」モードのパワー伝送を追加したものであって、これにより非協力的標的に対して放射がブロードキャストされ、標的からのリターンが高出力密度ビームの方向のためのビーコンとして用いられる。これは地上ベースのパワー収集と防空/宇宙防衛との両方に適用することができる。
以下、これらの実施形態を順番に論じる。
安価なソーラーアレイの大規模生産はかなり進行している。現在、様々なソーラーセル印刷技術が存在し、ここで高速製造性はセル効率に対してトレードオフの関係にある。注目すべき例は、参考文献[1]に報告されているものである。Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortiumは、毎分10メートル、又は2秒に1個に達する速度でプリントソーラーアレイを製造する能力を実証した。これらのセルは、30cm幅まで、最大地上インソレーションの下で10〜15ワット毎平方メートルのパワーを生成する。基材は、紙のように薄い可撓性プラスチック又は鋼を含む。図2に示すように、セルは、種々の有機材料を組み合わせて、太陽スペクトルの異なる部分からパワーを得る。
・ポリマー又はガラスなどの基材の薄い又は厚い層
・モリブデンバックコンタクト導体(モリブデンは高い仕事関数及び反射率を有する)
・p型半導体として機能する厚い(セル全体に対して相対的に)CIGS層
・セルのp型半導体とn型半導体との間にヘテロ接合を形成する酸化亜鉛の薄層
・アルミニウムが多量にドープされてn型半導体を形成する酸化亜鉛の薄層
薄膜セルCIGSの典型的な総厚は、数マイクロメートルのオーダーである。
・可撓性及び剛性両方の種々のタイプの基材、
・銀又は銅などの高導電性コンタクト層
・PドープCdTe吸収体層
・NドープCdS窓層
・スタック上部の透明導電性フィルムの様々な層
CdTeセルの典型的な厚さは、数マイクロメートルのオーダーである。
この実施形態は、両方とも同じ可撓性シート上に印刷された、プリントマイクロ波アンテナにパワー供給するプリントソーラーセルを組み合わせたものである。この場合のパッチアンテナは、地上又は宇宙の中継通信設備を含む通信機能を提供する。
プリントマイクロ波アンテナは、現在周知であり、多数の通信用途に関して急速に進歩している。ソーラーセル及びパッチアンテナを重ならないように散在させる場合、これらは、グレーティングローブを排除するために、ランダム化されたテッセレーションで配置されることになる。代替的に、両方の構成要素がシート上の同じ表面領域を占めるように印刷することが可能である。完全システムにおいて、反対側の面(球体の内面になることに起因する)上に印刷されたマイクロ波トランシーバ(二重送信機及び受信機)のみで構成されたアレイもまた存在することができる。

この実施形態は、上述の項目2にマイクロ波トランシーバを可撓性基材の表側に追加し、遠隔収集ステーションへのパワー伝送用のレトロディレクティブ・フェーズドアレイ機能を追加したものである。主な用途はPower Star衛星コンセプトである。Power Starバルーンスキンの外側に項目2と同様にソーラーセル及びパッチアンテナの両方が装備されるが、但しアンテナはできる限り完全に表面をカバーする。アンテナがソーラーセルに重ならないようにプリントされる場合、アンテナの位置は、グレーティングローブを避けるようにランダム化される。代替的に、透明パッチアンテナ又は小型化アンテナをソーラーセル上に直接印刷するか又はソーラーセル内に挿入して、上述のように両方の構成要素が同時に全表面積を占めるようにすることができる。可撓性基材の「表(obverse)」側は、Power Starスキンの内側に対応し、マイクロ波トランシーバ(二重送信機及び受信機)で完全に占有される。これらのデバイスの役割は、後述するように、Power Starを横切ってパワーを転送することである。これらのトランシーバの動作周波数は、外部表面アンテナの動作周波数とは異なるものとすることができる。特に、回折効果を低減するために、内部のトランシーバの方により高い周波数を使用することができる

本実施形態は上述のアイテムであるが、内部トランシーバは省略され、パワー伝送の「アクティブ」モードが付加されており、それによって非協調的なターゲットに放射が伝送され、ターゲットからの応答が高パワー密度ビームを指向させるためのビーコンとして使用される。
本出願では、低軌道デブリが大気圏上層部に入り燃え尽きるまで低軌道デブリの軌道速度が放射圧によって低下されるように低軌道(LEO)デブリ(退役衛星、使用済み上層ステージなど)を照射するためにパワースターを使用する。パワースターは、幾分高い軌道(おそらくMEO)に配置され、物体がパワースターに近付くと同時にビームを下方に向けてデブリ物体に当てる。物体が低高度軌道を移動する場合に物体がパワースターから遠ざかり始める時にビームがオフにされる。GEO軌道にある場合、実現可能なパワースターのパワー密度はかなり低い。しかしながら、1000キロメートルより短い距離では、パワー密度が非常に高く放射圧が著しい力に達する可能性がある。軌道を外れるデブリ物体は、これらが他の物体との衝突のせいでデブリ拡散の源になる可能性が高いので、大きなバスサイズ物体であることがここで仮定される。大まかな目標は、1年当たり少なくとも5つのこのような物体を廃棄することであり、これは、LEOのデブリ物体の総数を少なくとも一定に保つために十分であると推定される。

図12は、放射圧の時間履歴の初期部分を示す。一度デブリはパワースターの視野方向(LOS)内を通過する。力は直ちに1ニュートン近くに達する。これは、ミリメートルの波長によって、ターゲット上のパワースターの放射スポットが、デブリ物体範囲よりほとんど小さいことに起因し、ほとんどフルパワーが距離の変動に関わらすデブリによって受け取られる。デブリがパワースターの真下にある場合、ビームがオフとされ、デブリがもう一度LOSコンタクトに達するまで力はゼロのままである。
同様に、図13は、デブリの高度の時間履歴の早期部分を示す。デブリがパワースターのLOS内にある間は、デブリが急速且つほぼ直線的な速度で下降することを調べた。LOS内にない場合は、その軌道は、空気力学によりゆっくりとした速度で下降する。
一方、所与のデブリ物体が1つのパワースターに常にLOS接触するように対称的に並べられた5つのパワースターを持つとするとどうなるであろうか?図13に示した下降の速度から、1時間当たり2/3kmの下降を推測することができる。従って、500km初期高度から始まり軌道離脱時間は約1カ月になる。

Claims (9)
- ソーラーパワーによるマイクロ波を放射するシステムであって、
それぞれが太陽光の光子から電力を生成でき、パワービームにおいてマイクロ波の光子を生成できるマイクロ波ビームを形成する複数の送信機と整列設置された複数のソーラーセルであって、前記各送信機が前記ソーラーセルと整列設置された透明なマイクロ波パッチアンテナを有しているソーラーセルを備え、
前記各ソーラーセルは、その近傍に配置された送信機に電気的に接続され、かつ、当該送信機に電力を供給し、
前記各送信機は、前記ソーラーセルによって電気的に活性化されたときに、個々にマイクロ波パワービームを生成可能であり、
さらに、前記各送信機からの各個別のパワービームを制御して少なくとも1つのより強い制御されたマイクロ波のパワービームを生成する、前記各送信機に機能的に接続されたビーム形成制御手段をさらに含むシステム。 - 可撓性の基板の上に設けられている、請求項1に記載のシステム。
- 前記複数の送信機の間の側方ローブ干渉を低減するために、前記ソーラーセル、送信機、電気的接続手段及びビーム形成制御手段は前記基板上に配置されている、請求項2に記載のシステム。
- 前記より強いパワービームの方向及び強度の制御を可能にする、前記ビーム形成制御手段に機能的に接続された外部ビーム制御手段を含む、請求項2に記載のシステム。
- 前記ビーム形成制御手段に機能的に接続され、外部信号を検出するとともに自動的により強いパワービームを形成して外部信号源の点へ返すための、内部制御手段を含む、請求項2に記載のシステム。
- 前記ビーム形成制御手段は、複数のより強いパワービームを生成し、方向付けするようにされている、請求項5に記載のシステム。
- 可撓性の前記基板は地上に置くことができ、前記ビーム形成制御手段は、非共同ターゲットを探すために信号を送信することかでき、かつ、前記非共同ターゲットを連動させるために少なくとも1つのより強いパワービームを方向づけることができる、請求項6に記載のシステム。
- 可撓性の前記基板はエアロスタットであり、前記ビーム形成制御手段は、非共同ターゲットを探すために信号を送信することかでき、かつ、前記非共同ターゲットを連動させるために少なくとも1つのより強いパワービームを方向づけることができる、請求項6に記載のシステム。
- 可撓性の前記基板は空間に配置され、前記より強いパワービームは、放射圧の力によって空間の物体の状態ベクトルを変えるために運動量を伝えるよう方向づけられる、請求項6に記載のシステム。
