Abstract
Description
本特許出願は、Photo Diagnostic Systems,Inc.およびWilliam A.Worstell他によって、METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PERFORMING DUAL ENERGY COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY(CT) IMAGINGについて、2015年7月24日に出願された、係属中の先の米国仮特許出願第62/196,422号(代理人整理番号PDSI−1仮)の利益を主張し、同特許出願は、参照により本明細書に組み込まれる。
コンピュータ断層撮影(CT)
とりわけ、医療およびセキュリティ分野における主要なイメージングモダリティとして、コンピュータ断層撮影(CT)が出現した。CTイメージングシステムは一般に、様々な位置から対象(たとえば、身体または容器)内にX線を当て、対象を通過するX線を検出し、次いで対象の内部(たとえば、患者の解剖学的構造または容器の中身)の三次元(3D)データセットおよび3Dコンピュータモデルを構築するように検出されたX線を処理することによって動作する。3Dデータセットおよび3Dコンピュータモデルは次いで、対象の内部(たとえば、患者の解剖学的構造または容器の中身)の画像(たとえば、スライス画像、3Dコンピュータ画像など)を提供するように視覚化され得る。
ビームハードニング
実際には、X線管装置35は典型的に多色X線源である、すなわち、X線管装置35は典型的に、異なるエネルギーの範囲でX線を放出する種類のX線管を備える。しかしながら、多色X線源からのX線ビームがスキャンされている対象を通過するにつれて、低エネルギーX線光子が、一般に高エネルギーX線光子より容易に減衰される。したがって、多色X線源からのX線ビームは、それが対象を通過するにつれて、そのスペクトルのより低エネルギー部分を優先的に失う。これは、X線ビームのより低エネルギー部分を大幅に減衰させることができる骨および金属などの高原子番号物質に関する特有の問題であり、(とりわけ)2つの高減衰物質間で(たとえば、高原子番号を有する2つの物質間で)画像アーチファクトを発生させることがある。この現象は、時に「ビームハードニング」と称される。ビームハードニングを補正しようと、各種のアルゴリズムが開発されてきたが、そのようなアルゴリズムには一般に、それらが、一定の仮定がなされること(たとえば、多色X線源が、X線管が発熱するにつれて変化しない固定スペクトルを有すること、X線吸収スペクトルが、理想とされる形状を有すること、など)を必要とするという事実がある。
二重エネルギーCT
X線減衰は一般に、(i)スキャンされている対象による放射線の散乱、および/または(ii)スキャンされている対象による放射線の吸収によってもたらされる。主にこれらの2つの作用の原因となる機構は、コンプトン散乱および光吸収である。コンプトン散乱および光吸収は、(a)X線における光子のエネルギー、および(b)スキャンされている対象の組成に従って変化する。この理由で、2つの異なるX線エネルギー(すなわち、「二重エネルギー」)でとられる測定値が、スキャンされている対象における異なる物質間を区別するために使用され得ると認識されてきた。これらの2つの異なる測定されたX線エネルギーは、必ずしも単色測定値に限定されるわけではなく、実際には、2つの測定値は、低および高エネルギーの広範囲にわたってとられる(すなわち、低エネルギー多色測定値が二重エネルギースキャンのX線エネルギーの一方として使用され、高エネルギー多色測定値が二重エネルギースキャンのX線エネルギーの他方として使用される)。

多色X線源と、

(i)第1の組の多色エネルギー測定値および第2の組の多色エネルギー測定値の少なくとも一方を、選択される第1の単色エネルギーレベルでのX線と関連付けられる対応する第1の単色データセットに、および、選択される第2の単色エネルギーレベルでのX線と関連付けられる対応する第2の単色データセットに変換し、
(ii)第1の単色データセットを第1の単色画像に変換し、第2の単色データセットを第2の単色画像に変換し、
(iii)第1の単色画像および第2の単色画像の少なくとも1つを使用して、(a)ビームハードニングアーチファクトがない画像の提供、および(b)対象内の物質特性の同定の提供の少なくとも一方を行う

二重エネルギーコンピュータ断層撮影(CT)イメージングを行うための装置
本発明によれば、またここで図4を見ると、新規な多重エネルギー(二重エネルギーを含む)CTイメージングシステム105が提供される。多重エネルギー(二重エネルギーを含む)CTイメージングシステム105は、以下に述べられることになる場合を除いて、前述された例証的な先行技術のCTイメージングシステム5と実質的に同じである。
多重エネルギー(二重エネルギーを含む)コンピュータ断層撮影(CT)イメージングを行うための方法
本発明によれば、2つ以上の異なる多色X線エネルギーでとられる測定値を使用して、多重エネルギー(二重エネルギーを含む)CTイメージングを提供するための新たな工程も提供される。
より詳細には、二重エネルギーCTイメージングが対象(たとえば、身体または容器)に行われることになるとき、対象は、新規な二重エネルギーCTイメージングシステム105の中央開口部120に配置され、回転ディスク130は、固定ガントリ125のまわりに回転され、X線管装置135は、多色X線ビーム145を放出するように通電され、X線検出器装置140は、X線検出器装置140の各検出器ごとに2つのエネルギー測定値、すなわち、多色「高エネルギー測定値」および多色「低エネルギー測定値」を収集するように作動される。
任意の所与の応答線に対する信号は、フィルタ付き検出器と関連付けられようとフィルタ無し検出器と関連付けられようと(すなわち、それぞれ、gHIGHまたはgLOW)、任意の単一エネルギーの純粋な単色システムに対する予測信号に変換され得る。これは、Rおよびg(gHIGHかgLOWか)がルックアップインデックスとして使用されるルックアップテーブルを使用して、適切な乗数を得て、CT取得多エネルギーサイノグラムg(gHIGHかgLOWか)を合成単一エネルギーサイノグラムGENERGYに変換して達成され、ここで「ENERGY」は任意の単一エネルギーレベル(たとえば、160kevの単一エネルギーでの合成単一エネルギーサイノグラムを表すG160、40kevの単一エネルギーでの合成単一エネルギーサイノグラムを表すG40、など)でもよい。実際には、フィルタ付きおよびフィルタ無しチャネルの応答が異なるので、フィルタ付きおよびフィルタ無しチャネルの各々に対して、別々のテーブルおよび別々のルックアップ値が必要とされる(すなわち、それぞれGENERGYの対応する単色サイノグラムを生成する乗数「AENERGY」および「BENERGY」)。このようにして、応答線ごとに合成単一エネルギー信号レベルが予測されて、フル解像度単一エネルギー合成サイノグラムを生成する。これは、適切な乗数を使用して任意の単一エネルギーに対して行われてもよい。
X線の減衰を決定する基礎となる物理的相互作用は、一般にコンプトン散乱(弱束縛電子と相互作用する)および光電効果(原子殻内の電子との共鳴相互作用)によって特性化される。これらの2つの種類の相互作用の測定強度に強く依存する任意の物理特性が評価され得る。たとえば、物質の質量密度は、物質が構成された原子の種類(光電効果の関数)および体積当たりの原子数(電子密度の関数)に大きく依存しており、複数の合成単一エネルギー画像IHIGH、ILOW(たとえば、I160、I40でありえる)を使用して求められ得る。
単一エネルギーサイノグラムのためのルックアップテーブルの生成
多エネルギーサイノグラムデータから単一エネルギーサイノグラムデータへの変換は、好適な実施形態をルックアップテーブルに一般化して、数学関数として上記されてきた。数学関数および/またはルックアップテーブル内容は、理論計算から、または、経験的データから完全に求められることがありえる。両手法について、目的は、検出器で測定される多エネルギー信号を期待される単一エネルギー信号に変換することである。変換動作が「期待される」単一エネルギー信号を生成することを検証するために、通常は、単純な形状および組成の検査対象を選択することが便利である。ほとんどの実施形態において、「期待される」値は、最良の科学的に導出された値である。我々の本実施形態において、これらの目標値は、国立標準技術研究所(NIST)によって公開されるデータから得られるが、しかし任意の情報源から得られることもありえる。
Zeffectiveまたは他の物質特性を求めるためのルックアップテーブルの生成
単一エネルギーサイノグラムデータ(すなわち、gENERGY、たとえば、g160、g40などでありえる)および単一エネルギー画像データ(すなわち、IENERGY、たとえば、I160、I40などでありえる)と物質特性との間の変換は、数学関数である。好適な実施形態において、この関数は表形式に還元される。テーブル内の値は、物質の既知の物理特性から、または、データの経験的分析から導出され得る。好適な実施形態において、テーブルは経験的に導出される。たとえば、様々な平均原子番号(Zeffective)の試料がスキャンされる。2つの単一エネルギー画像(たとえば、I160、I40)の比率は、Zeffective値を返すテーブルへのインデックスとして使用される。したがって、テーブル値を発生するために、画像比率およびZeffective値は、試料物質に対して記録される。6つの試料物質からのデータが収集されて、最良適合関数Zeff(画像比率)が求められる。

Claims (21)
- 対象の画像を提供するための多重エネルギーコンピュータ断層撮影(CT)イメージングシステムであって、
多色(polychromatic)X線源と、
前記多色X線源からのX線を、前記X線が対象を通過した後に検出するための、ならびに、前記対象を通過した第1の多色X線スペクトルに関する第1の組の多色エネルギー測定値を提供するための、および、前記対象を通過した第2の多色X線スペクトルに関する第2の組の多色エネルギー測定値を提供するための検出器と、
(i)前記第1の組の多色エネルギー測定値および前記第2の組の多色エネルギー測定値の少なくとも一方を、選択される第1の単色エネルギーレベルでのX線と関連付けられる対応する第1の単色データセットに、および、選択される第2の単色エネルギーレベルでのX線と関連付けられる対応する第2の単色データセットに変換し、
(ii)前記第1の単色データセットを第1の単色画像に変換し、前記第2の単色データセットを第2の単色画像に変換し、
(iii)前記第1の単色画像および前記第2の単色画像の少なくとも1つを使用して、(a)ビームハードニングアーチファクトがない画像の提供、および(b)前記対象内の物質特性の同定(identification)の提供の少なくとも一方を行う
ように構成されたプロセッサと、
を備えるシステム。 - 前記検出器が、第1の区間(section)および第2の区間を備え、さらに、前記第1の組の多色エネルギー測定値が、前記多色X線源と前記検出器の前記第1の区間との間に第1のフィルタを位置決めすることによって提供され、前記第2の組の多色エネルギー測定値が、前記多色X線源と前記検出器の前記第2の区間との間に第2のフィルタを位置決めすることによって提供される、請求項1に記載のシステム。
- 前記第1のフィルタおよび前記第2のフィルタの少なくとも1つが、前記多色X線源と前記対象との間に配置される、請求項2に記載のシステム。
- 前記第1のフィルタおよび前記第2のフィルタの少なくとも1つが、前記対象と前記検出器との間に配置される、請求項2に記載のシステム。
- 前記検出器が、第1の区間および第2の区間を備え、さらに、前記第1の組の多色エネルギー測定値が、前記多色X線源と前記検出器の前記第1の区間との間に第1のフィルタを位置決めすることによって提供され、前記第2の組の多色エネルギー測定値が、前記検出器の前記第1の区間の出力と前記検出器の前記第2の区間の出力との間の差を計算することによって提供される、請求項1に記載のシステム。
- 前記第1のフィルタが、前記多色X線源と前記対象との間に配置される、請求項5に記載のシステム。
- 前記第1のフィルタが、前記対象と前記検出器との間に配置される、請求項2に記載のシステム。
- 前記対応する第1の単色データセットが、第1のサイノグラム(sonogram)を含み、前記対応する第2の単色データセットが、第2のサイノグラムを含む、請求項1に記載のシステム。
- 前記第1の組の多色エネルギー測定値および前記第2の組の多色エネルギー測定値の前記少なくとも一方が、ルックアップテーブルを使用して、対応する第1の単色データセットに、および、対応する第2の単色データセットに変換される、請求項1に記載のシステム。
- 前記ルックアップテーブルが、前記第1の組の多色エネルギー測定値および前記第2の組の多色エネルギー測定値の前記少なくとも一方を、対応する第1の単色データセットに、および、対応する第2の単色データセットに変換するための少なくとも1つの乗数(multiplier)を提供する、請求項9に記載のシステム。
- 前記ルックアップテーブルのインデックスが、
(i)前記第1の組の多色エネルギー測定値および前記第2の組の多色エネルギー測定値の少なくとも一方と、
(ii)前記第1の組の多色エネルギー測定値と前記第2の組の多色エネルギー測定値との間の差に感応する(sensitive to)関数とを含む、請求項9に記載のシステム。 - 前記ルックアップテーブルのインデックスが、
(i)前記第1の組の多色エネルギー測定値および前記第2の組の多色エネルギー測定値の少なくとも一方と、
(ii)前記第1の組の多色エネルギー測定値と前記第2の組の多色エネルギー測定値との間の比率とを含む、請求項11に記載のシステム。 - 前記第1の単色画像および前記第2の単色画像の前記少なくとも1つが、前記第1の単色画像および前記第2の単色画像の1つを提示することによってビームハードニングアーチファクトがない画像を提供するために使用される、請求項1に記載のシステム。
- 前記第1の単色画像および前記第2の単色画像の前記少なくとも1つが、前記第1の単色画像および前記第2の単色画像の合成画像を提示することによってビームハードニングアーチファクトがない画像を提供するために使用される、請求項1に記載のシステム。
- 前記合成画像が、加重合成(weighted composite)である、請求項14に記載のシステム。
- 前記合成画像の各ボクセル(voxel)が、前記第1の単色画像または前記第2の単色画像から選択されるボクセルを含む、請求項14に記載のシステム。
- 前記第1の単色画像および前記第2の単色画像の前記少なくとも1つが、ボクセル値が前記スキャンされた対象の前記物質特性を反映する画像を生成することによって前記対象内の物質の同定を提供するために使用される、請求項1に記載のシステム。
- 前記第1の単色画像および前記第2の単色画像の前記少なくとも1つが、ボクセル値が前記スキャンされた対象の電子密度(rho値)を反映する画像を生成することによって前記対象内の物質の同定を提供するために使用される、請求項1に記載のシステム。
- 前記第1の単色画像および前記第2の単色画像の前記少なくとも1つが、ボクセル値が前記スキャンされた対象のZeffectiveを反映する画像を生成することによって前記対象内の物質の同定を提供するために使用される、請求項1に記載のシステム。
- 前記検出器が、前記対象を通過した第3の多色X線スペクトルに関する第3の組の多色エネルギー測定値を提供する、請求項1に記載のシステム。
- ビームハードニングアーチファクトがない対象の画像を提供する、および/または、前記対象の物質特性の同定を提供するための方法であって、
前記対象を通過した第1の多色X線スペクトルに関する第1の組の多色エネルギー測定値を提供し、前記対象を通過した第2の多色X線スペクトルに関する第2の組の多色エネルギー測定値を提供するステップと、
前記第1の組の多色エネルギー測定値および前記第2の組の多色エネルギー測定値の少なくとも一方を、選択される第1の単色エネルギーレベルでのX線と関連付けられる対応する第1の単色データセットに、および、選択される第2の単色エネルギーレベルでのX線と関連付けられる対応する第2の単色データセットに変換するステップと、
前記第1の単色データセットを第1の単色画像に変換し、前記第2の単色データセットを第2の単色画像に変換するステップと、
前記第1の単色画像および前記第2の単色画像の少なくとも1つを使用して、(a)ビームハードニングアーチファクトがない画像、および(b)前記対象内の物質特性の同定の少なくとも一方を提供するステップと、
を含む方法。
