Abstract
Description
典型的な充電式リチウムイオン電池のカソードには、例えば、炭素がアノード材料として使用された場合、高い電位差でリチウムを可逆的にインターカレート/デインターカレートすることができる遷移金属酸化物材料が使用されている。1990年にSony Corporationから発表された最初の市販のリチウムイオン電池は、カソード材料としてLiCoO2を使用したが、LiCoO2は、90%を超えるリチウムイオン電池で使用され続けている。LiCoO2はよく整った層状の結晶構造を有し、この結晶構造は調製が簡単で、高速および可逆的リチウムインターカレーションを可能にする。しかし、LiCoO2は、熱安定性に乏しく、有毒であるため、例えば、良い性能と共に、安定性、経済性、環境への配慮が電池に要求される、電気式およびハイブリッド車などの大きなサイズの電池の用途には不適切とされている。
本発明の目的は、電池での使用のための新規なカソード材料を開発することである。本発明による新規な材料の一例は、スピネル構造を有する、ルテニウム(Ru)でドープしたLiNi0.5Mn1.5O4カソード材料を開発することである。Ruは、+2から+8に及ぶ大きい酸化状態を有する金属である。本発明の別の目的は、高電流密度で良い電気化学的特性を示すRuでドープしたLiNi0.5Mn1.5O4カソード材料の粉末を生成することである。
一実施形態では、ニッケルが該遷移金属であり、ルテニウムが、結晶構造内のニッケル位置に存在し、式Li[Li(C-2)xRuxNi0.5-(C-1)x]Mn1.5O4(式中、xは、0.0001〜0.5/(C−1)の範囲の数であり、Cは、ルテニウムの原子価である)を有する。したがって、原子価4+のルテニウムに対して、xは、0.0001〜0.1666の範囲となり得る。
さらに別の実施形態において、ニッケルが該遷移金属であり、ルテニウムが、結晶構造内のニッケル位置に存在し、式LiRuxNi0.5-(cx/2)Mn1.5O4(式中、xは、0.0001〜1/Cの範囲の数であり、Cは、ルテニウムの原子価である)を有する。したがって、原子価4+のルテニウムに対して、xは、0.0001〜0.25の範囲となり得る。
Li1-CxRuxNi0.5Mn1.5O4(式3)は、結晶構造でルテニウムが、リチウムを部分的に置き換えている材料系に対する式である。式3では、xは、0.0001〜0.5/Cの範囲の数であり、Cは、ルテニウムの原子価である。したがって、原子価4+のルテニウムに対して、xは、0.0001から0.125の範囲であってよい。
ドープを行っても、材料が電荷中性となるようにルテニウム含有量を選択するべきであることに留意されたい。
本例では、Cは、4+であり、これによって、ルテニウム含有量の点から式を、Li1+2xRuxNi0.5-3xMn1.5O4(式1)およびLiRuxNi0.5-2xMn1.5O4(式2)と書き換えることができる。Li1+2xRuxNi0.5-3xMn1.5O4系(式1)およびLiRuxNi0.5-2xMn1.5O4系(式2)に関しては、Ruの含有量は、0.05(x=0.05)であった。化学量論的量のLiOH、NiO、MnO2およびRuO2をそれぞれ対応する式1および式2により混合した。混合物を最初に120分の間ボールミルにかけることによって、粉末混合物を形成した。ボールミルを行った後、65O℃で3,000分間か焼を行った。Li1+2xRuxNi0.5-3xMn1.5O4の形成を観察した。図1Aおよび1Bは、固体反応の前と後のLi1+2xRuxNi0.5-3xMn1.5O4粉末系のX線回折(XRD)スペクトルを示す。図1Aは、ボールミルした粉末混合物のXRDスペクトルを示し、この中で、NiO、MnO2およびRuO2の回折ピークが見られる。固体反応後、純粋なNiO、MnO2およびRuO2回折ピークは消え、新しいスピネル型Li1+2xRuxNi0.5-3xMn1.5O4相を検出した。LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4、Li1+2xRuxNi0.5-3xMn1.5O4およびLiRuxNi0.5-2xMn1.504のミクロ構造が図2A、2Bおよび2Cに示されている。図2A〜2Cに見られるように、Li1+2xRuxNi0.5-3xMn1.5O4は、同じ合成条件で比較的に小さい粒度を達成している。LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4およびLi1+2xRuxNi0.5-3xMn1.5O4の伝導率が図3に示されている。室温でのLi1+2xRuxNi0.5-3xMn1.5O4の電気伝導率は、LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4のもののおよそ8倍であり、試験した温度の全範囲において、Li1+2xRuxNi0.5-3xMn1.5O4の電気伝導率は、常にLiNi0.5Mn1.5O4のものより数倍高いことを見ることができる。これらの3つのカソード材料の1470mA/gでのサイクル性能が図4に示されている。Li1+2xRuxNi0.5-3xMn1.5O4は、数サイクル後、約70mAh/gの最大容量に到達し、容量は、500サイクル後も変化なしでほとんど一定のままである。その一方で、LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4系は、約65mAh/gの最大容量に到達し、500サイクル後は40mAh/gに急激に低下している。LiRuxNi0.5-2XMn1.5O4は、111mAh/gの最高容量をもたらすことができることが示されている。これらの3つの材料系の充放電能を図5にプロットする。この中で、3つの系は、同じ充電速度で、しかし異なる放電速度でサイクルさせた。すべての系の容量は同じであったにもかかわらず、充電速度が、0.5C未満である際、LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4の充放電能は、高い充電速度で急激に低下している。RuでドープしたLi1+2xRuxNi0.5-3xMn1.5O4は、ドープしていないLiNi0.5Mn1.5O4と比較してより低い抵抗を有することが示されている(図6)。図7は、DC分極を用いた導電率測定を示す。この測定により、導電率は、Ru濃度の増加と共に増加することが明らかになる。
本例において、ルテニウムは、リチウムイオンの部位でドープし、あるリチウムイオン空格子の生成をもたらしている。対応する式3に従い、化学量論的量のLiOH、NiO、MnO2およびRuO2を混合した。この混合物を最初に120分間ボールミルにかけることによって、粉末混合物を形成する。ボールミルを行った後、650℃で3,000分間か焼を行った。ルテニウムイオンによるリチウムイオンの部分的な置換が原因で、低い充電および放電速度で容量がわずかに減少している。しかし、1OC(1470mA/g)の高い充電および放電速度では、その容量は、LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4のものより高い(図8)。加えて、1OC速度でほとんど容量の消失がない。
