流体と流体内に複数の少なくとも1種類の粒子とを備えている誘電泳動媒体を提供することと、
第1の周波数を有する電界を媒体に印加し、それによって粒子が電気泳動動作を受けるようにして、第1の光学状態を生成することと、
第1の周波数より高い第2の周波数を有する少なくとも1つの電界を媒体に印加して、それによって粒子が誘電泳動動作を受けるようにすることと、
第2の周波数より高い第3の周波数を有する電界を媒体に印加して、それによって粒子が誘電泳動動作を受けるようにし、第1の光学状態とは異なる第2の光学状態を生成することと

流体と流体内に複数の少なくとも1種類の粒子とを備えている誘電泳動媒体と、
誘電泳動媒体に電界を印加するように配置された少なくとも1つの電極と、
少なくとも1つの電極によって印加される電界を制御する電界制御手段であって、電界制御手段は、第1の周波数を有する電界であって、粒子が電気泳動動作を受け第1の光学状態を生成するようにする、電界と、第1の周波数より高い第2の周波数を有する少なくとも1つの電界であって、粒子が誘電泳動動作を受けるようにする、電界と、第2の周波数より高い第3の周波数を有する電界であって、粒子が誘電泳動動作を受けるようにし、第1の光学状態とは異なる第2の光学状態を生成する、電界とを印加するように配置された、電界制御手段と
を備えている誘電泳動ディスプレイを提供する。本発明のディスプレイは、電界制御手段が第1の周波数電界と第3の周波数との間に複数の中間周波数電界を印加するように配置され、その結果、遷移範囲内(本明細書において定義されるように)において、連続する印加された電界間のどの周波数ステップも第1の周波数と第3の周波数との間の合計周波数差の10パーセントを超えないことを特徴とする。
流体と流体内に複数の少なくとも1種類の粒子とを備え、粒子は、誘電泳動媒体に電界を印加時に流体を通って可動である、誘電泳動媒体と、
誘電泳動媒体が光透過電極を通って見られ得るように、誘電泳動媒体に隣接して配置された少なくとも1つの光透過電極と、
光透過電極から電源に延びる導体であって、導体は光透過電極よりも高い導電率を有し、導体が少なくとも2つの間隔を置かれた点において光透過電極と接触することを特徴とする、導体と
を備えている誘電泳動ディスプレイを提供する。
以下に説明される理由により、導体の導電率は重要であり、多くの場合、導体は、約1オーム/平方以下の抵抗率を有するべきである。光透過電極は、インジウム酸化スズを備え得る。電気泳動ディスプレイは、誘電泳動媒体の両側に光透過電極を有する可変透過窓の形態を有し得る。しかしながら、本発明の誘電泳動ディスプレイの使用は、可変透過窓に限定されないで、誘電泳動ディスプレイは、誘電泳動ディスプレイおよび電気誘導ディスプレイがこれまで用いられてきた任意の用途に用いられ得る。従って、例えば、本発明はまた、本発明のディスプレイが備えている電子ブック読取り装置と、ポータブルコンピュータと、タブレットコンピュータと、セルラ電話と、スマートカードと、標示と、時計と、シェルフラベルまたはフラッシュドライブを提供する。
駆動周波数のそのような徐々の増加は、ディスプレイの開状態において透過の向上(増加)という結果となることが見出された。顕微鏡による観察に基づき、この透過の向上は、
カプセルまたは小滴の壁における色素パッキングの向上によるものと考えられる(但し本発明はこの考えに決して限定されない)。この方法での非常に多くの数のより小さい周波数ステップを用いることはまた、ディスプレイの閉状態から開状態への速くかつ滑らかな遷移を提供し、観察者には個々の小さなステップを見えない。一方、単一またはより少ない数の大きなステップが用いられる場合、観察者には遷移中の望ましくないフリッカが見え得る。
Claims (16)
- 誘電泳動ディスプレイを動作する方法であって、該方法は、
流体と、該流体内の複数の少なくとも1種類の粒子とを備えている誘電泳動媒体を提供することと、
第1の周波数を有する電界を該媒体に印加し、それによって該粒子が電気泳動動作を受け、第1の光学状態を生成することと、
該第1の周波数より高い第2の周波数を有する少なくとも1つの電界を該媒体に印加して、それによって該粒子が誘電泳動動作を受けるようにすることと、
該第2の周波数より高い第3の周波数を有する電界を該媒体に印加して、それによって該粒子が誘電泳動動作を受け、該第1の光学状態とは異なる第2の光学状態を生成することと
を包含し、
該方法は、複数の中間周波数の電界が該第1の周波数電界と第3の周波数電界との間で用いられ、その結果、(本明細書において定義されるようの)遷移範囲内において、連続する印加された電界間のどの周波数ステップも該第1の周波数と第3の周波数との間の全周波数差の10パーセントを超えないことを特徴とする、方法。 - 連続する印加された電界間の前記遷移範囲内のどの周波数ステップも、前記第1の周波数と第3の周波数との間の全周波数差の5パーセントを超えない、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 連続する印加された電界間の前記遷移範囲内のどの周波数ステップも、前記第1の周波数と第3の周波数との間の全周波数差の1パーセントを超えない、請求項2に記載の方法。
- 前記遷移範囲内の前記周波数ステップは、該遷移範囲外の周波数ステップより小さい、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記第1、第2および第3の周波数電界はすべて、実質的に同じ振幅で印加される、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記第3の周波数電界は、前記第1の周波数電界より大きい振幅で印加される、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 流体と、該流体内の複数の少なくとも1種類の粒子とを備えている誘電泳動媒体と、
該誘電泳動媒体に電界を印加するように配置された少なくとも1つの電極と、
該少なくとも1つの電極によって印加される該電界を制御する電界制御手段であって、該電界制御手段は、第1の周波数を有する電界であって、該粒子が電気泳動動作を受け第1の光学状態を生成するようにする、電界と、該第1の周波数より高い第2の周波数を有する少なくとも1つの電界であって、該粒子が誘電泳動動作を受けるようにする、電界と、該第2の周波数より高い第3の周波数を有する電界であって、該粒子が誘電泳動動作を受けるようにし、該第1の光学状態とは異なる第2の光学状態を生成する、電界とを印加するように配置された、電界制御手段と、
該電界制御手段が該第1の周波数電界と第3の周波数電界との間の複数の中間周波数電界を印加するように配置され、その結果、(本明細書において定義されるような)遷移範囲内において、連続する印加された電界間のどの周波数ステップも該第1の周波数と第3の周波数との間の合計周波数差の10パーセントを超えないことを特徴とするディスプレイと
を備えている、誘電泳動ディスプレイ。 - 可変透過窓と、光変調器と、電子ブック読取り装置と、ポータブルコンピュータと、タブレットコンピュータと、セルラ電話と、スマートカードと、標示と、時計と、シェルフラベルまたはフラッシュドライブを備えている、請求項7に記載のディスプレイ。
- 流体と、該流体内の複数の少なくとも1種類の粒子とを備えている誘電泳動媒体であって、該粒子は、誘電泳動媒体に電界を印加時に該流体を通って可動である、誘電泳動媒体と、
該誘電泳動媒体が該光透過電極を通って見られ得るように、該誘電泳動媒体に隣接して配置された少なくとも1つの光透過電極と、
該光透過電極から電源に延びる導体であって、該導体は光透過電極よりも高い導電率を有し、該誘電泳動ディスプレイは該導体が少なくとも2つの間隔を置かれた点において光透過電極と接触することを特徴とする、導体と
を備えている、誘電泳動ディスプレイ。 - 前記誘電泳動媒体および前記光透過電極は直角をなし、前記導体は実質的に該電極の各端の中点で該光透過電極と接触するように配置される、請求項9に記載の誘電泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記誘電泳動媒体および前記光透過電極は十分に大きく、前記導体が1つの点のみにおいて該光透過電極に接続された場合、該誘電泳動媒体に該1つの点から少なくとも200mm離れて、少なくとも1つの点が該誘電泳動媒体にある、請求項9に記載の誘電泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記導体は、前記光透過電極の実質的に全周囲の周りに延びる導電性トレースの形態を有する、請求項9に記載の誘電泳動ディスプレイ。
- 前記導体は、約1オーム/平方以下の抵抗率を有する、請求項9に記載の誘電泳動ディスプレイ。
- 光透過電極は、インジウム酸化スズを備えている、請求項9に記載の誘電泳動ディスプレイ。
