Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for inspecting a glide of a magnetic disk mounted on a magnetic disk device such as a hard disk drive (HDD) and a method for manufacturing the magnetic disk.
Various information recording techniques have been developed with the recent increase in information processing capacity. In particular, the surface recording density of an HDD (hard disk drive) using magnetic recording technology continues to increase at an annual rate of about 100%. Recently, an information recording capacity exceeding 250 Gbytes for a 2.5-inch diameter magnetic disk used for an HDD or the like has been demanded. It is required to realize an information recording density exceeding 400 Gbits per unit.
By the way, the process up to the shipment of the magnetic disk is completed, packed and shipped to the market through a sequential series of manufacturing processes including a disk substrate manufacturing process, a film forming process, and an inspection process. This inspection process usually includes a glide inspection process and a signal quality inspection process.
This glide inspection process is to check the unevenness and foreign matter on the magnetic disk so that the flying of the magnetic head is not hindered when the magnetic disk is installed in the hard disk drive, and remove the magnetic disk outside the allowable range It is a process to do. Through this inspection process, a magnetic disk product with stable quality is completed and supplied to the market. For glide inspection, a glide head manufactured for glide inspection is used. As such a glide head, for example, it is known to use a glide head disclosed in
The head slider (generally also called Pico slider), which is currently the mainstream in glide inspection, has a length of 1.25 mm, a width of 1 mm, a thickness of 0.3 mm, and a mass of 1.5 mg, but a diameter of 1 μm. Front and rear convex defects can be detected. However, in order to drive the drive stably in accordance with the recent dramatic increase in recording density, even a magnetic disk mounted on the drive has a minute size defect that cannot be detected at present, such as a diameter of 0. The presence or absence of a convex defect of about 25 to 1 μm or a concave defect of about 20 μm in diameter is a problem.
The defect detection sensitivity of the glide inspection can be improved by reducing the flying height of the glide head. However, it is very difficult to control the flying height of a large number of glide heads at a certain height in a mass production factory for magnetic disks. Moreover, reducing the flying height of the glide head increases the probability of head contamination and scratches on the magnetic disk surface, so improving the defect detection sensitivity by lowering the flying height of the glide head more than ever It is very difficult.
The present invention has been made in view of the above problems, and the object of the present invention is to have a minute size defect that cannot be detected by the current glide inspection without lowering the flying height of the glide head. It is an object of the present invention to provide a magnetic disk glide inspection method capable of detecting with high accuracy, and a magnetic disk manufacturing method including a step of performing a glide inspection using the glide inspection method.

Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail.
A magnetic disk glide inspection method according to the present invention is a method of performing a glide inspection of a magnetic disk using a glide head flying and flying over a magnetic disk as in
The present invention improves the defect detection sensitivity by reducing the size of the slider mounted on the glide head rather than reducing the flying height of the glide head, and cannot be detected by the current glide inspection. A micro-sized defect, for example, a convex defect having a diameter of about 0.25 μm to 1 μm or a concave defect having a diameter of about 20 μm can be detected with high accuracy.
In the glide inspection, the defect determination is performed based on the magnitude of the output voltage from the piezo element attached to the glide head. Therefore, the glide head having a larger output from the piezo element has a higher defect detection sensitivity.
By the way, the output voltage of the piezo element depends on V on the vibration speed of the slider of the glide head. Here, when the mass of the slider is M, the mass of the defect is m, and the velocity of the defect is v, the present inventor has focused on the fact that MV = mv is established according to the law of conservation of momentum. That is, the vibration speed V of the slider depends on mv / M. Therefore, the smaller the slider size of the glide head and the smaller the slider mass M, the higher the output voltage from the piezo element and the higher the defect detection speed. Thus, it is possible to accurately detect a micro-sized defect that cannot be detected by, for example, a convex defect having a diameter of about 0.25 μm to 1 μm. Further, as an element common to all stylus-type measuring instruments, the smaller the probe, the higher the resolution of measuring the concave defect. Therefore, also in the glide inspection, the concave defect detection sensitivity is improved by reducing the slider size.
FIG. 1 shows an example of a slider size and mass used in the present invention in comparison with a conventional slider size and mass. The length, width, and thickness in FIG. 10A represent those shown in FIG. In addition, the length, width, and thickness in FIG.
Here, as an example, for example, the vibration speed V of the slider when the defect mass m is 10 mg and the defect speed v is 100 m / s is obtained. In the case of the conventional slider, the vibration speed V of the slider is 666 m / s (= 10 × 100 / 1.5), whereas in the case of the slider of the present invention, the vibration speed V of the slider is 2000 m / s (= 10 × 100 / 0.5). By reducing the head slider size and reducing the mass, the slider vibration speed increases, the output voltage from the piezo element increases, and the defect detection sensitivity can be greatly improved.
FIG. 1 shows an example of slider size and mass used in the present invention. In the present invention, the length is 0.75 to 0.95 mm, the width is 0.6 to 0.8 mm, and the thickness is 0.20. A slider of ~ 0.26 mm is preferred. The mass of the slider is preferably 0.6 mg or less.
Moreover, as a material of the slider used in the present invention, for example, iron and iron alloys (including stainless steel) are preferably used from the viewpoint that a small size can be manufactured with high accuracy.
Further, according to the present invention, since a micro defect can be accurately detected and a remarkable effect can be obtained in a glide inspection of a magnetic disk having a mirror surface, the surface of the magnetic disk to be inspected is particularly a mirror surface. Is preferred.
A magnetic disk for glide inspection according to the present invention is manufactured by forming at least a magnetic layer, a protective layer, etc. on a magnetic disk substrate.
A glass substrate is preferred as the magnetic disk substrate. The glass constituting the glass substrate is preferably amorphous aluminosilicate glass. Such a glass substrate can be finished to a smooth mirror surface by polishing the surface. As such an aluminosilicate glass, SiO 2 is 58 wt% to 75 wt%, Al 2 O 3 is 5 wt% to 23 wt%, Li 2 O is 3 wt% to 10 wt%, Na 2 An aluminosilicate glass containing O as a main component in an amount of 4 wt% or more and 13 wt% or less (however, an aluminosilicate glass containing no phosphorus oxide) can be used. For example, SiO 2 is 62 wt% to 75 wt%, Al 2 O 3 is 5 wt% to 15 wt%, Li 2 O is 4 wt% to 10 wt%, and Na 2 O is 4 wt% to 12 wt%. Wt% or less, ZrO 2 containing 5.5 wt% or more and 15 wt% or less as a main component, and a weight ratio of Na 2 O / ZrO 2 of 0.5 or more and 2.0 or less, Al 2 O 3 / ZrO An amorphous aluminosilicate glass containing no phosphorous oxide having a weight ratio of 2 of 0.4 to 2.5 can be obtained.
It is preferable that the glass substrate for a magnetic disk has a mirror surface having a maximum roughness Rmax of 6 nm or less by at least mirror polishing and cleaning of the glass substrate. Such a mirror state can be realized by performing a mirror polishing process and a cleaning process in this order.
In addition, you may perform a chemical strengthening process after a washing | cleaning process process. As a method of chemical strengthening treatment, for example, a low-temperature ion exchange method in which ion exchange is performed in a temperature range that does not exceed the temperature of the glass transition point, for example, a temperature of 300 degrees Celsius or more and 400 degrees Celsius or less is preferable.
As a material for the magnetic layer formed on the magnetic disk substrate, a hexagonal CoPt ferromagnetic alloy having a large anisotropic magnetic field can be used. As a method for forming the magnetic layer, a method of forming a magnetic layer on a glass substrate by sputtering, for example, DC magnetron sputtering can be used. Further, by interposing an underlayer between the glass substrate and the magnetic layer, the orientation direction of the magnetic grains of the magnetic layer and the size of the magnetic grains can be controlled. For example, by using a cubic base layer such as a Cr-based alloy, for example, the magnetization easy direction of the magnetic layer can be oriented along the magnetic disk surface. In this case, a magnetic disk of the in-plane magnetic recording system is manufactured. Further, for example, by using a hexagonal underlayer containing Ru or Ti, for example, the easy magnetization direction of the magnetic layer can be oriented along the normal of the magnetic disk surface. In this case, a perpendicular magnetic recording type magnetic disk is manufactured. The underlayer can be formed by sputtering as with the magnetic layer.
A protective layer can be formed on the magnetic layer. As the protective layer, an amorphous hydrogenated carbon-based protective layer is suitable. For example, the protective layer can be formed by a plasma CVD method. The film thickness of the protective layer is preferably about 40 angstroms to 80 angstroms.
Further, a lubricating layer may be further formed on the protective layer. The lubricating layer is preferably composed mainly of a lubricant having a functional group at the end of the main chain of the perfluoropolyether compound, particularly a perfluoropolyether compound having a terminal hydroxyl group as a polar functional group. The thickness of the lubricating layer is preferably about 5 angstroms to 15 angstroms. The lubricating layer can be applied and formed by a dip method.
Hereinafter, the embodiment of the present invention will be described more specifically with reference to examples.
(Disc board manufacturing process)
First, a glass substrate made of disk-shaped aluminosilicate glass having a diameter of 66 mmφ and a thickness of 1.5 mm is obtained from molten glass by direct pressing using an upper die, a lower die, and a barrel die, and a rough lapping step (rough grinding step) ), A shape processing step, a fine lapping step (fine grinding step), an end mirror processing step, a first polishing step, and a second polishing step, followed by chemical strengthening to manufacture a magnetic disk glass substrate. . This glass substrate is mirror-polished on both the main surface and the end surface.
As a result of visual inspection and precise inspection of the glass substrate surface after the chemical strengthening and subsequent cleaning, no defects such as protrusions and scratches due to deposits were found on the glass substrate surface. Further, when the surface roughness of the main surface of the glass substrate obtained through the above steps was measured with an atomic force microscope (AFM), it was for a magnetic disk having a mirror surface with Rmax = 4.5 nm and Ra = 0.3 nm. A glass substrate was obtained. The glass substrate had an outer diameter of 65 mm, an inner diameter of 20 mm, and a plate thickness of 0.635 mm.
(Film formation process)
Next, using a single-wafer sputtering apparatus on the obtained glass substrate for magnetic disk, a Ti-based adhesion layer, an Fe-based soft magnetic layer, a NiW first underlayer, a Ru second underlayer, CoCrPt A magnetic layer was sequentially formed, and then a carbon-based protective layer was formed by plasma CVD. Further, a perfluoropolyether lubricant was applied on the protective layer by a dip method to form a lubricating layer. This magnetic disk is a magnetic disk for perpendicular magnetic recording. When the surface roughness of the main surface of the obtained magnetic disk was measured with an atomic force microscope (AFM), it was confirmed that the mirror surface had Rmax = 4.6 nm and Ra = 0.3 nm.
(Glide inspection process)
As the head slider, two sliders of the present invention having the size and mass shown in FIG. 1A and two conventional sliders are used, and a glide head equipped with these sliders and the above-described magnetic disk for inspection are used. A glide test was conducted. A magnetic disk test system RQ7800 (trade name) manufactured by Hitachi Electronics Engineering Co., Ltd. was used as the inspection machine. The flying height of the glide head was set to 10 nm.
As a result of inspecting the magnetic disk, the result of FIG. 2 was obtained. FIG. 2 is a diagram showing a result of comparison of defect detection sensitivities between the present invention and a conventional (comparative example) head slider.
From the results of FIG. 2, it can be seen that according to the present invention, the defect detection sensitivity (S / N ratio) is improved and the variation between the two same sliders used for the measurement is very small. That is, the flying height of the glide head is not particularly lowered, and it is possible to detect a defect of a minute size that cannot be detected by the current glide inspection, and to detect it with high accuracy. On the other hand, in the conventional example, the defect detection sensitivity (S / N ratio) is lower than that of the present invention, and the variation between the two same sliders used for the measurement is large, so that a highly accurate inspection cannot always be performed.
