本発明の潤滑基油中のオレフィン重量%は、下記のステップ(A)〜(D)により、プロトン−NMRにより測定される。
(A)試験する炭化水素の重水素化クロロホルム中の5〜10%溶液を準備する。
(B)少なくとも12ppmスペクトル幅の標準プロトンスペクトルを得て、化学シフト(ppm)軸を正確に参照する。この装置は、レシーバー/ADCをオーバーロードすることなく信号を得るために、十分なゲインレンジ(gain range)をもたなければならない。30°パルスが適用される時、この装置は、65,000の最小信号デジタル化ダイナミックレンジをもたなければならない。好ましくは、ダイナミックレンジは、260,000以上になるであろう。
(C)6.0〜4.5ppm(オレフィン)、
2.2〜1.9ppm(アリル)、
1.9〜0.5ppm(飽和)間の積分強度を測定する。
(D)ASTM D2503により測定された試験物質の分子量を用いて、以下を計算する。
(1)飽和炭化水素の平均分子式、

(7)プロトンNMRによるオレフィン重量%=100×二重結合数×典型的オレフィン分子中の水素数÷典型的試験物質分子中の水素数。
本発明の潤滑基油中で、少なくとも一種の芳香族官能基をもつ低水準の分子を測定するために用いた方法は、ヒューレット・パッカード1050シリーズのクオータナリーグラジェント高速液体クロマトグラフィ(HPLC)システム、とHP Chem−stationにインターフェースさせたHP1050ダイオード−アレイUV−Vis検出器の組み合わせを用いる。高度に飽和された潤滑基油中の個々の芳香族の種類の同定は、それらのUVスペクトルパターン及び溶離時間に基づいて行われた。この分析のために用いたアミノカラムは、芳香族分子の環数(又は、より正確には、二重結合数)に基づいて芳香族分子を大まかに識別する。したがって、単環式芳香族を含有する分子が、最初に溶離し、続いて多環式芳香族が、分子当たりの二重結合数が増加する順に溶離する。類似の二重結合特性をもつ芳香族については、環上にアルキル性置換だけをもつ芳香族が、ナフテン性置換のものより早く溶離する。
これらの芳香族化合物を、きわめて低水準においても、同定するためにHPLC−UVが用いられる。一般的に、多環式芳香族化合物は、単環式芳香族化合物に比較して10から200倍強力に吸収する。また、アルキル置換は、約20%だけ吸収に影響を与えた。それ故、種々の芳香族化合物を分離、同定するためにHPLCを用いること、及びそれが如何に効果的に吸収するかを知ることが重要である。
精製されたモノ芳香族標準中で、少なくとも一種の芳香族官能基をもつ全分子の重量%が、長期間炭素13NMR分析により確認された。NMRは容易に芳香族炭素を測定し、応答は分析される芳香族の種類に依存しないので、NMRはHPLC−UVに比較して校正が容易であった。高度に飽和された潤滑基油中の95〜99%の芳香族が単環式芳香族であったこと認識することにより、NMRの結果は、芳香族炭素%から芳香族分子%に変換された(HPLC−UV及びD2007に準じて)。
本発明の潤滑基油は、電解イオン化質量分析法(FIMS)により、アルカン及び異なる不飽和数をもつ分子に特徴付けられた。基油留分中の分子分布は、FIMSにより決定された。サンプルは、好ましくは試験される基油の少量(約0.1mg)をガラス毛細管中に置くことにより、固体プローブを経て導入された。毛細管は、質量分析器用の固体プローブの先端に配置され、かつプローブは、約10−6トールで運転される質量分析器内で、分当たり50℃と100℃の間の速度で、約40乃至50℃から500乃至600℃に加熱された。質量分析器は、デカード当たり5秒の速度で、m/z40からm/z1,000まで走査された。
本発明の潤滑基油の分枝特性は、以下の7−ステップのプロセスに従って、炭素−13NMRを用いて油のサンプルを分析することにより測定される。このプロセスの説明に引用された文献は、プロセスのステップを詳細に説明する。ステップ1及び2は、新鮮なプロセスからの初期材料についてだけ実施される。

含ろう供給原料を水素異性化脱ろうすることにより製造された潤滑基油は、広い沸点範囲を有する種々の分子量の混合物を含むことができる。この開示は、それぞれの沸点範囲の10%点と90%点をいうであろう。10%点は、カット内に存在する炭化水素の10重量%が、大気圧で蒸発する温度のことをいう。同様に、90%点は、存在する炭化水素の90重量%が、大気圧で蒸発する温度のことをいう。沸点範囲の分布をいう場合の開示では、10%と90%沸点の間の沸点範囲が、それに該当する。1,000°F超の沸点範囲を有するサンプルでは、この開示の沸点範囲の分布は、標準分析法D−6352又はその同等手段を用いて測定された。1,000°F未満の沸点範囲を有するサンプルでは、この開示の沸点範囲の分布は、標準分析法D−2887又はその同等手段を用いて測定された。
本発明の方法に従って潤滑基油の製造に用いられる供給原料は、75重量%超のn−パラフィン、好ましくは少なくとも85重量%のn−パラフィン、及び最も好ましくは少なくとも90重量%のn−パラフィンを含有する含ろう供給原料である。含ろう供給原料は、従来の石油から導かれた、例えば粗ろう(slack wax)などの供給原料であってもよく、又はそれは、合成の供給原料、例えばフィッシャー・トロプシュ合成から製造された供給原料から導かれてもよい。供給原料の主要部分は、650°F超で沸騰すべきである。好ましくは、供給原料の少なくとも80重量%が、650°F超で沸騰し、最も好ましくは少なくとも90重量%が、650°F超で沸騰するであろう。本発明の実施で用いた高度にパラフィン系の供給原料は、典型的には0℃超の初期流動点、より普遍的には10℃超の初期流動点を有するであろう。
油圧作動油ポンプは、適切な潤滑、十分な圧力ヘッド、及びポンプ吸引口の十分なカバーを実施するために、十分な容量になるように満たされなければならない。殆どの油圧作動油系は、最低注入線のマークがある。一般的に、油タンクは、システム運転マニュアルで指摘された基準まで、マークされた注入線まで、又は全油圧系シリンダーがフル拡張される時に、最低でも、最高のポンプ吸引口の先端部の上約3インチの水準まで、油圧作動油で満たさなければならない。
