Abstract
【解決手段】液晶表示装置700は、垂直配向処理された二つの基板間に配置された負の誘電率異方性を有する液晶層と、液晶層の配向を調整し、電圧を印加した時に、液晶分子が傾斜配向し、その配向は複数の第1の方向及び第2の方向を含む、第1のドメインレギュレータ及び第2のドメインレギュレータを含む。各画素には、第1のドメインレギュレータ及び第2のドメインレギュレータのうちの一つを配置し、全て隣接する二つの画素又は全て隣接する二つの赤色画素(緑色画素又は青色画素)には、異なるドメインレギュレータを配置する。

display)となる。所定設定の電圧が印加されると、液晶分子は水平方向に配列されて白表示(white
display)となる。垂直配向型液晶表示装置は、ツイステッドネマティック液晶表示装置と比べて良好なコントラスト比及び高速応答を備える上、白黒表示に優れた視野角特性を備えている。しかし、この垂直配向型液晶表示装置には、視野角が狭いという重大な欠点があった。そのため、垂直配向型液晶表示装置の応用は限定されたものであった。
本発明の液晶表示装置は、主に第1の基板及び第2の基板を含む。それら基板の表面は、例えば垂直配向膜の使用などにより垂直配向処理を行う。二つの基板間には、負の誘電率異方性(dielectric constant anisotropy)を有する液晶層を密封する。液晶層に含まれた液晶分子は、液晶層に電界が印加されていない時、第1の基板の表面に対して略垂直となる。

Claims (2)
- マトリクス状に配列された複数の画素を備えた液晶表示装置であって、
垂直配向処理された第1の基板及び第2の基板と、
前記第1の基板と前記第2の基板との間に挟設され、電圧が印加されていない時に、前記第1の基板の表面に対し略垂直である液晶分子を含む液晶層と、
互いに隣接する二つの画素又は互いに隣接する同じ色の二つの画素にそれぞれ設けられ、電圧が印加された時に前記液晶分子が傾斜配向するように前記液晶層の配向を調整し、前記配向はそれぞれ方向が異なる複数の第1の方向及び第2の方向を含む、第1のドメインレギュレータ及び第2のドメインレギュレータと、を備えることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1の基板は、複数の画素電極を備え、
前記第1のドメインレギュレータ及び前記第2のドメインレギュレータは、
前記画素電極上につづら折状に設けられた複数のスリット及び前記第2の基板上に設けられた複数の突起を含み、前記つづら折状のスリット及び前記突起は、互いに平行かつ交互に設けられたドメインレギュレータ(A)と、
前記画素電極上に十字形状に設けられた複数のスリット及び前記第2の基板上に十字形状に設けられた前記スリットを囲む閉じた矩形状の突起を含むドメインレギュレータ(B)と、
前記画素電極上にX字形状に設けられた複数のスリット及び前記第2の基板上に前記スリットを囲む閉じた矩形状に設けられた前記突起を含むドメインレギュレータ(C)と、
前記画素電極上に矩形状に設けられた複数のスリット及び前記第2の基板上に前記スリットを囲む閉じた矩形状に設けられた突起を含むドメインレギュレータ(D)と、
前記画素電極上に菱形状に設けられた複数のスリット及び前記第2の基板上に前記スリットを囲む閉じた矩形状に設けられた突起を含むドメインレギュレータ(E)と、
前記画素電極上に設けられた複数のスリット及び前記第2の基板上に設けられた複数の突起を含み、前記スリットと前記突起とは互いに平行かつ交互に設けられ、前記突起と前記画素電極エッジとの間の角度は約45°であるドメインレギュレータ(F)と、
前記画素電極上に設けられた複数のスリット及び前記第2の基板上に設けられた複数の突起を含み、前記スリットと前記突起とは互いに平行かつ交互に設けられ、前記突起と前記画素電極エッジとの間の角度は約90°であるドメインレギュレータ(G)と、からなる群から選ばれることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
