Claims (5)
- 互いに対向する一対の基板と、該一対の基板間に挟み込まれた液晶層とを有し、前記一対の基板のうちの一方に画素電極及び共通電極を有する液晶表示装置であって、
前記画素電極及び共通電極の双方に形成され、前記画素電極又は共通電極との間で放射状の電界を発生させる複数の制御電極を備え、
前記画素電極及び前記共通電極は、いずれも櫛歯状とされるとともに、同一平面内において、互いに対向し、かつ、一方の櫛歯電極が他方の櫛歯電極に平行になるように形成され、
前記制御電極の平面形状が四角形であり、当該制御電極の対角線方向が、前記ゲート線及びデータ線の延在方向にそれぞれほぼ平行であり、
前記制御電極は、前記画素電極及び前記共通電極の同じ櫛歯電極上において互いに等間隔になるように、かつ、当該画素電極上の前記制御電極は、当該画素電極と隣接する共通電極の櫛歯電極上の前記制御電極とは前記等間隔の長さの半分の長さだけ位置ずれした状態で配置されるとともに、前記共通電極上の前記制御電極は、当該共通電極と隣接する画素電極の櫛歯電極上の前記制御電極とは前記等間隔の長さの半分の長さだけ位置ずれした状態で配置され、
上記複数の制御電極は、平面視で市松模様状に配置されている、
ことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記液晶層が、前記基板にほぼ平行な面内で回転駆動される、請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記一方の基板上には、互いに直交する複数のゲート線及びデータ線が形成されており、
前記画素電極及び前記共通電極が、該ゲート線及びデータ線で区画された画素内に交互に形成され、かつ、
前記画素電極及び前記共通電極の各櫛歯電極が前記データ線に平行になるように形成されている、請求項1又は2に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記液晶層の初期配向が、前記データ線の延在方向に平行な方向である、請求項3に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記画素電極及び前記共通電極が、絶縁層に形成されたコンタクトホールを介して下層側の引き回し配線に接続された透明電極で構成されており、前記制御電極が、前記画素電極及び共通電極と同じ層に形成された透明電極で構成されている、請求項1〜4の何れか一に記載の液晶表示装置。
