Abstract
【解決手段】 液晶表示装置100は、光入射側から光出射側に向かって順に、第1偏光層101、第1光学補償層102、第1ガラス基板103、第1配向膜104、液晶層105、第2配向膜106、第2ガラス基板107、第2光学補償層108、及び、第2偏光層109を備える。液晶表示装置100は、ノーマリホワイトのTN型の液晶表示装置として構成され、白表示時の印加電圧Vwが、液晶のしきい値電圧をVth、液晶層105のプレチルト角をθとして、
Vw≦Vth×exp(−0.235×θ+7.36×10-3)
を満たす値に設定される。

にあることを特徴とする。
Vw≦Vth×exp(−0.235×θ+7.36×10-3)
を満たす値に設定している。このように、プレチルト角に応じて白表示時の印加電圧を設定することにより、各プレチルト角について、白輝度を向上することができ、所定のコントラスト比を実現する視野角範囲を広くすることによって、液晶表示装置の表示品質を向上できる。

Claims (6)
- 光入射側から光出射側に向かって順次に、第1偏光層、第1光学補償層、第1基板、第1配向膜、ツイスト角が90度付近にあるツイストネマチック(TN)型の液晶層、第2配向膜、第2基板、第2光学補償層、及び、第2偏光層を有するノーマリホワイト型の液晶表示装置において、
前記第1及び第2光学補償層がそれぞれ、液晶層の光学特性とは逆の負の光学特性を有し、
TN型液晶のしきい値電圧Vthを、
Vw≦Vth×exp(−0.235×θ+7.36×10-3)
にあることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - コントラスト比が10:1以上となる左右方向の視野角がそれぞれ80度以上である、請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1光学補償層は、前記液晶層の第1基板に近い側の液晶層部分によるリタデーションを補償し、前記第2光学補償層は、前記液晶層の第2基板に近い側の液晶層部分によるリタデーションを補償する、請求項1又は2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1光学補償層が、光入射側から光出射側に向かって順次に積層された、それぞれが負の一軸光学特性を有するn層(nは2以上の整数)のディスコチック液晶膜を有し、各ディスコチック液晶膜は、前記第1光学補償層が補償する液晶層部分をn層の薄層に分割したと考えると、前記第1基板側から数えて第i番目(1≦i≦n)のディスコチック液晶膜が、前記第1基板側から数えて第i番目の薄層の黒表示時における液晶分子の長軸方向とほぼ同じ向きの光軸を有し、
前記第2光学補償層が、光入射側から光出射側に向かって順次に積層された、それぞれが負の一軸光学特性を有するn層のディスコチック液晶膜を有し、各ディスコチック液晶膜は、前記第2光学補償層が補償する液晶層部分をn層の薄層に分割したと考えると、前記第2基板側から数えて第i番目のディスコチック液晶膜が、前記第2基板側から数えて第i番目の薄層の黒表示時における液晶分子の長軸方向とほぼ同じ向きの光軸を有する、請求項3に記載の液晶表示装置。 - コントラスト比が10:1以上となる左右方向及び上方向の視野角がそれぞれ80度以上である、請求項4に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1光学補償層が、負の一軸光学特性を有し、かつ、前記液晶層の第1基板近傍の液晶分子の黒表示時における分子長軸方向とほぼ同じ向きの光軸を有する屈折率楕円体を有し、
前記第2光学補償層が、負の一軸光学特性を有し、かつ、前記液晶層の第2基板近傍の液晶分子の黒表示時における分子長軸方向とほぼ同じ向きの光軸を有する屈折率楕円体を有する、請求項3に記載の液晶表示装置。
