生物には、殆ど含まれていないバナジウムがホヤに含まれていて、今のところ高濃度のバナジウムを含有する動物は、ホヤに限られている。バナジウムは学術的には原子番号23番の元素で金属イオンである。ホヤが糖尿病の改善に有効であると言うことは、近年公知のことであり、バナジウムが人体に作用をしてインスリンの様な働きをするのではと言われている、又ホヤにはその他に身体の免疫機能を増進したり、神経痛、関節痛、筋肉痛の緩和に有効な成分が含まれている。

従来ホヤはその外皮を除いた軟体部を生で食べるとか、軟体部を乾燥し粉末に加工することは試みられていたが、生ホヤは特異な味と香りがあり、食する人により好き嫌いが激しい食品である。生ホヤを糖尿病その他の治療の為に毎日継続して長期間大量に生で食することは困難である。又前記の乾燥粉末の場合も治療に必要な摂取量が多い為に不便である。ホヤに含まれている有効成分が抽出、濃縮されたホヤエキスを含有する錠剤やドリンク剤やエキス充填カプセルが製造されると、携帯にも便利で手軽にホヤの有効成分が摂取できる。
