等物でもよいと解される。さらに、利用されるコートされた単相一体(monolith
ic)ガラス基板が、熱処理可能であるが、それ自体だけでは調和できなくても、
前記製品で調和性を達成できることがさらに発見されている。
ともに、調和性が要求されることはよく知られている。窓、扉などに使用される
ガラス基板、通常、板ガラスは、多数の窓と扉を有する新しいオフィスビルディ
ングなどの特別の場合の要件を満たすため、大量に生産し所定の大きさに切断す
ることが多い。前記窓や扉のいくつかは熱処理されるが(すなわち焼き戻し、加
熱強化、曲げ加工など)、残りの窓や扉は、主として費用を節約するため、熱処
理する必要がないので熱処理されないことが前記ビルディングの場合、望ましい
だけでなく、各種法典の規定に適合させるため必要であることが多い。さらにか
ようなビルディングは、安全および/または積層物は、建築上および審美上の目
的のため、ビルディングにともに使用される熱処理されていないI.G.ユニッ
トおよび/または積層物と調和しなければならない(すなわち、色および、好ま
しくは透過率と反射率も前記熱処理されていないI.G.ユニットおよび/また
は積層物と実質的に同じになっていなければならない)。その上に現在は、多く
の商業目的に使用されるかような窓、扉などは、好ましくは、スペクトルの青緑
側になる傾向がある実質的に中間色でなければならない。
以外のシステムで、調和性を達成することがこれまで可能になっているが、一方
の層が熱処理されそして残りの層が熱処理されていない2つの異なる層システム

してその公知のIR反射特性を利用できず、したがってその望ましい結果も得る
ことができない。

2つ以上のガラス板間の単一もしくは複数の間隔は、一般に約1/2インチであ
り、中に空気もしくはアルゴンなどの不活性ガスが入っているかまたは部分的に
減圧にする。ほとんどの場合、その空間には「曇り」を防ぐため乾燥剤が入って
いる。勿論、図2と4は、本発明で考えられているように、断熱および/または
遮音を目的として使用される多種類のI.G.ユニットの単なる例であると解さ
れる。

’585号特許の2名の発明者(Larson氏とLingle氏)(Guardian Industries)な

,344,718号、同第5,376,455号、同第5,514,476号および同第5,770,321
号がある。BOC Groupのよく知られているSuper E-IIIとSuper E-IVのコーティ
ングは、米国特許第5,377,045号と同第5,563,734号に広く引用され、かつ、
このような公知の包括的構造も例示されている。

るガラス基板から外側に向かって、 a)窒化ケイ素からなる層、 b)ニッケルまたはNi含量が少なくとも約10重量%であるニッケル合金から
なりその窒化物または酸化物を実質的に含有していない実質的に金属の層、 c)銀からなる実質的に金属の層、 d)ニッケルまたはNi含量が少なくとも約10重量%であるニッケル合金から
なりその窒化物または酸化物を含有していない実質的に金属の層、および e)窒化ケイ素からなる層、 を備え、前記熱処理された層コーティングシステムは、熱処理される前より少
なくとも約4%高い可視光透過率を有し、前記層の対応する厚さは、組み合わさ
って前記コーティングのガラス側から単相一体物として見たとき、ΔE* abが5.0
より小さく、かつ、Δa*が約0.8より小さい前記熱処理されたコート基板が得ら
れるガラス製品が提供される。

および 窒化ケイ素からなる第5の層、 を備え、前記層の対応する厚さは、組み合わさってガラス側から見たとき、Δ
E* abが3.0以下であり、かつ、Δa*が0.7より小さい前記ガラス製品が得られ、 b)前記コーティングをその上に有する前記基板に、前記コートされた基板の
可視光透過率を少なくとも約4%上昇させる熱処理を行い、次いで c)その後、一方から他方へ透過光を伝達するように前記ガラス基板を組み立

ある。ガラス側(例えば「G」)は、コーティングが位置しているガラス基板の

である。このStandardとその規定は本願に援用するものである。このStandardで
は、放射率が半球放射率(Eh)および正規放射率(En)として報告されている
。

抵抗プローブ(dispensable 4-point resistivity probe)とSignatone Corp.(

て通常測定される。

「熱処理可能の」および「熱処理性」の定義は当該技術分野で従来利用されてい
るのと同じ意味である(例えば、前記’585号特許の場合と同じである)。例え
ば、本願で一般に行われている熱処理は、比較的高い温度を利用し、かつ、通常
の環境下では大部分の従来技術のコーティングに悪影響を与える方法である。こ
のような熱処理としては、焼き戻し、曲げ加工、熱強化、および高いシーリング
温度または製作温度を利用する。I.G.ユニットまたはガラス積層物を製造す
るのに使用する特定の方法がある。このような熱処理、例えば、焼き戻しと曲げ
加工は、コートされた基板を、最終の結果を保証するため十分な時間、1100°F
(593℃)を越えて1450°F(788℃)の温度まで加熱する必要があることが多い
。

る、すなわち取り消すのに役立っていると考えられ、したがってこのことは本発
明の発見である。さらに、本発明のコーティングの光透過率が熱処理中に増大す
ると、前記マスキング作用が高まって、あらゆる差を取り消すと考えられる。
する場合、すなわち熱処理されていないものと比較すると、本発明の製品が、調
和性を達成するために調和可能である必要がないということは、上記マスキング
作用による、本発明の予想外に有益な特性になる。その結果、2.0より小さいΔ
Eを採用しなければならないという、これまで必要であると考えられていた特性
を熱処理された基板に課さないという実質的な利益が生まれる。下記のように、
単相一体(個々)の基板のΔEは、実質的に2.0より高く、しかも調和性が本発
明の二重もしくは多重の製品に達成される。
ということは、本発明で意図されている製品とシステムに関する本発明のさらな
る発見である。本発明のシステムの調和性について、Δa*の限度を定義しなけ
ればならないということが、驚くべきことには、実際に発見されたのである。達
成される調和性の程度を最大にするため、好ましくはそして、任意に色も定義さ
れる。この色は、勿論、前記従来のa*、b*の値は、青−緑色の象限に入る傾向
がある所望の実質的に中間色の範囲に色を維持するためには両者とも負の値でな
ければならない。所望の色が異なる場合は、対応して、a*b*値を、顧客の要求
に適合するように変えるが、特定のΔEとΔa*を適当に選択することによって
、調和性を維持する。
所望の場合、本発明の特定の層システムに調和性を達成するには下記の一般的な
指針に従うべきであるという本発明のさらなる発見である。

く、好ましくは約0.5より小さいことだけが必要である。

I.G.ユニットの「内側」(「In」と表示してある)を「外側」(「Out
」と表示してある)と区別するために太陽19を模式図的に示してある。図2を
見て分かるように、このようなI.G.ユニットは、「外側」の板ガラス(シー
ト)21と「内側」の板ガラス(シート)23で構成されている。これら2枚の
板ガラス(例えば、厚さが2mm〜8mmのフロートガラス)は、周縁を通常の
シーラント25でシールされ、かつ、通常のデシカントストリップ27を備えて
いる。これらの板ガラスは、通常の窓または扉を保持するフレーム29(部分概
略図に示す)に保持されている。これらのガラス板の周縁をシールし、次いでチ
ャンバー30内の空気をアルゴンなどのガスで置換することによって、典型的な
高絶縁値のI.G.ユニットが製造される。この場合のチャンバー20は、幅が
一般に約1/2”である。内壁24もしくは26(または両者)は本発明の層シ
ステムを備えていてもよい。例示されているように、この実施形態の外側ガラス
シート21の内壁24は、通常のスパッタコーティング法を利用して取り付けた
スパッタコート層コーティングシステム22を備えている。図2からみて分かる
ように、このようなシステムは、例えば、外側からこの住宅を見る観察者は、板
ガラス21、コーティング24、空間30および板ガラス23を通じて見るから
、本発明の一部として発見された「マスキング」の原理を有効に利用している。
しかし、このような場合、板ガラス21を通過して板ガラス23にあたる太陽光
のいくらかが板ガラス23から反射して観察者の眼に到達するので、そのマスキ
ング作用が、さもないと存在していた(例えば、窓/扉が単相一体のシートであ
る場合)小さな差を中和して所望の調和性をつくる働きをする。
図4に着目してみよう。図4に示すI.G.ユニットのプレスタック(prestack
)は、ガラスビーズ35によって選択された距離(例えば0.1mm)を隔てられ
た2枚の典型的な透明フロートガラス板31と33を利用している。上部シート
31より大きさがわずかに大きい下部シート33は、その内側平坦面34に、通
常の方法でスパッタコートされた本発明の層システム37を有している。シート
31の内側平坦面32は任意に層コーティングに使用してもよく、または両方の
平坦面32と34を層コーティングに使用してもよい。次に、通常のシーラント
39(例えば、融点が比較的低いセラミック)を、大きい方のシート33の上に
小さい方のシートを心をあわせて載せることによって形成された周囲領域41に

窓(図示せず)として使用される場合、その曲げられていない積層物と調和でき
ることを要求されることが多く、それら自体が曲げられているか、または平坦で
ある(例示されているように)窓や扉50、52などと調和しなければならない

すべき重要な側ではない。むしろ、ガラス側の特性値ΔE* abは3.95であるが、
Δa*は-0.03であるので、単相一体として調和できない。しかし、可視光の透過
率TYの要求した増大が起こっているので、製造されたI.G.ユニットは下記
表に示すように調和可能である。
業用の色と極めて満足すべきU値とシェーディング係数も達成され、このデータ
を既知の商業的要求と比較すると、当業技術者は上記のことが明確に分かるであ
ろう。
によって、たとえΔb*が比較的大きくなっていても、積層物とI.G.ユニッ
トは、それ自体が熱処理可能であるが調和できないコートされた単相一体シート
で製造され、しかもそのI.G.ユニットと積層物は実際に調和性が高い。さら
に、最終製品には、極めて満足すべきU値とシェーディング係数がもたらされる
という銀の利点がある。さらに例証されているように、a*とb*がともに負の値
に保持されているから、大部分の建築上の目的を達成するために望ましい実質的
に中間色の青緑色が達成される。

可能な層システムを有し、コートされた基板が熱処理されるガラス製品において
、前記ガラス製品が調和可能であり、前記スパッタコートされた層システムは、
それがコートされるガラス基板から外側に向かって、 a)窒化ケイ素からなる層、 b)ニッケルまたはNi含量が少なくとも約10重量%であるニッケル合金から
なりその窒化物または酸化物を実質的に含有していない実質的に金属の層、 c)銀からなる実質的に金属の層、 d)ニッケルまたはNi含量が少なくとも約10重量%であるニッケル合金から
なりその窒化物または酸化物を含有していない実質的に金属の層、および e)窒化ケイ素からなる層、 を備え、前記熱処理された層コーティングシステムは、熱処理される前より少な
くとも約4%高い可視光透過率を有し、前記層の対応する厚さは、組み合わさっ
て前記コーティングのガラス側から単相一体物として見たとき、ΔE* abが5.0よ
り小さく、かつ、Δa*が約0.8より小さい前記熱処理されたコート基板が得られ
るガラス製品。 - 【請求項2】 前記ガラス製品は、互いに実質的に間隔をあけて平行に配置
されその間に絶縁空間を形成する2枚の板ガラスで構成された絶縁ガラスユニッ
トであり、前記層コーティングシステムは、前記絶縁空間内で前記板ガラスの一
方の表面上に配置されている請求項1に記載のガラス製品。 - 【請求項3】 前記ガラス製品は、ともにシールされた少なくとも2枚のガ
ラスを備え、かつ、それらガラスの間に前記層コーティングシステムを有するガ
ラス積層物である請求項1に記載のガラス製品。 - 【請求項4】 層の厚さが、 という範囲にある請求項1に記載のガラス製品。
- 【請求項5】 前記層システムは実質的に前記5つの層からなり、そして前
記熱処理されたコート基板のa*とb*はともに負数である請求項1に記載のガラ
ス製品。 - 【請求項6】 前記熱処理されたコート基板は、a*が約-2.3〜-6.3であり
、かつ、b*が約-4.5〜-10.5である色を有している請求項5に記載のガラス製品

求項1に記載のガラス製品。 - 【請求項10】 前記熱処理されたコート基板は、焼き戻しされたガラス基
板であって、焼き戻しされた後の可視光透過率は焼き戻し前より5〜7%大きい
請求項1に記載のガラス製品。 - 【請求項11】 前記ガラス製品は絶縁ガラスユニットであり、ガラス側か
ら見たとき、ΔE* abが3.0以下であり、かつ、Δa*が0.7より小さい請求項1ま
たは10に記載のガラス製品。 - 【請求項12】 前記層の前記厚さが、 である請求項1に記載のガラス製品。
- 【請求項13】 前記実質的に金属の層が実質的にNi、FeおよびCrからなる
請求項12に記載のガラス製品。 - 【請求項14】 前記製品は、前記熱処理されたコートガラス基板とコート
されていないガラス基板との間に絶縁空間を有する絶縁ガラスユニットであり、
前記基板の前記ガラスが透明ガラスであり、前記熱処理されたコートガラス基板
は、熱処理の前後に、6mmのガラス厚さにおいて測定したとき、単相一体物と
して、 という特性を有する請求項1に記載のガラス製品。 - 【請求項15】 前記熱処理されたコートガラス基板は、熱処理の前後に、
6mmのガラス厚さにおいて測定したとき、単相一体物として、 という特性を有する請求項14に記載のガラス製品。 - 【請求項16】 前記絶縁ガラスユニットは、6mmのガラス基板の厚さに
おいて測定したとき、 という特性を有し、ここで「熱処理されていないもの」とは、前記製品において
コートされていない基板が熱処理されているのと同じI.G.ユニットを意味し
、そして「熱処理されたもの」とは前記コートされた基板が熱処理されているこ
とを意味する請求項14に記載のガラス製品。 - 【請求項17】 前記熱処理されたコートガラス基板が焼き戻しされてなる
請求項16に記載のガラス製品。 - 【請求項18】 前記コートされたガラス基板のΔa*は実質的にゼロであ
る請求項1に記載のガラス製品。 - 【請求項19】 一方から他方へ透過光を伝達する少なくとも2つのガラス
基板を有し、かつ、前記基板の少なくとも一方の上にスパッタコートされた熱処
理可能な層システムを有し、そのコートされた基板が熱処理されてなる調和可能
なガラス製品を製造する方法において、 a)前記ガラス基板の少なくとも一方の表面に、前記熱処理可能な層システム
を逐次スパッタコートし、その層システムは、それがコートされる前記ガラス基
板から外側に向かって、 窒化ケイ素からなる第1の層、 ニッケルまたはニッケル含量が少なくとも約10重量%のニッケル合金からな
りその窒化物または酸化物を実質的に含有していない第2の実質的に金属の層、 銀からなる第3の実質的に金属の層、 ニッケルまたはニッケル含量が少なくとも約10重量%のニッケル合金からな
りその窒化物または酸化物を実質的に含有していない第4の実質的に金属の層、
および 窒化ケイ素からなる第5の層、 を備え、前記層の対応する厚さは、組み合わさってガラス側から見たとき、Δ
E* abが3.0以下であり、かつ、Δa*が0.7より小さい前記ガラス製品が得られ、 b)前記コーティングをその上に有する前記基板に、前記コートされた基板の
可視光透過率を少なくとも約4%上昇させる熱処理を行い、次いで c)その後、一方から他方へ透過光を伝達するように前記ガラス基板を組み立
てて前記調和可能なガラス製品を製造する、 工程からなる方法。 - 【請求項20】 前記熱処理は、焼き戻し、曲げ加工および熱強化から選択
される請求項19に記載の方法。 - 【請求項21】 前記ガラス製品は2枚の板ガラスからなる絶縁ガラスユニ
ットであり、前記板ガラスの一方はその上に前記コーティングを有し、前記組立
て工程は、前記板ガラスを互いに実質的に平行な関係に保持してその間に絶縁ス
ペースを形成する工程を備え、前記層コーティングシステムは、前記絶縁空間内
に位置する前記コートされた板ガラスの表面に配置される請求項19に記載の方
法。 - 【請求項22】 前記製品は少なくとも2枚のガラスからなるガラス積層物
であり、それらガラスの一方はその上に前記熱処理可能なスパッタコートされた
層を有し、前記組立て工程は、前記コーティング層が前記ガラス間に配置される
ように、前記コートされたガラスを、熱処理後に他方のガラスに積層物する工程
を備える請求項19に記載の方法。 - 【請求項23】 層の厚さが、 という範囲にある請求項19に記載の方法。
- 【請求項24】 前記熱処理は焼き戻しである請求項19に記載の方法。
- 【請求項25】 前記熱処理は前記可視光透過率を5%〜7%増大させる請

としてガラス厚さ6mmにおいて測定したとき、ΔE* abが5.0より小さく、かつ
、Δa*が0.8より小さい請求項19に記載の方法。 - 【請求項28】 前記単相一体物は、ΔE* abが4.0より小さく、かつ、Δa * が0.5より小さい請求項27に記載の方法。
- 【請求項29】 前記単相一体物は、Δa*が実質的にゼロである請求項2
8に記載の方法。 - 【請求項30】 前記製品は、コートされた基板が熱処理されず、他の点で
は同一に製造されたI.G.ユニットと実質的に同じU値とシェーディング係数
を有する絶縁ガラスユニットである請求項19に記載の方法。 - 【請求項31】 前記U値とシェーディング係数が、 である請求項30に記載の方法。
- 【請求項32】 製造された前記層コーティングシステムは、前記熱処理の
前後ともに機械的および化学的に耐久性である請求項19に記載の方法。 - 【請求項33】 製造された前記コーティングシステムは、前記熱処理の前
後ともに機械的および化学的に耐久性である請求項1、4又は12に記載のガラ
ス製品。 - 【請求項34】 間隔をあけた第1および第2基板を備え、前記第1および
第2基板の少なくとも一方はその上にコーティングシステムを有し、 前記コーティングシステムは、 a)厚さが310〜350Åの第1窒化ケイ素含有層、 b)厚さが10〜20Åの第1NiCr含有層、 c)厚さが52〜62ÅのAg含有層、 d)厚さが10〜20Åの第2NiCr含有層、および e)厚さが390〜440Åの第2窒化ケイ素含有層、 を含んでなるコート製品。 - 【請求項35】 前記Ag含有層は、前記第1および第2NiCr含有層の各々と
接触してなる請求項34に記載のコート製品。 - 【請求項36】 前記第1窒化ケイ素含有層は前記少なくとも一方の基板と
接触し、前記第1NiCr含有層は前記第1窒化ケイ素含有層と前記Ag含有層との間
に直接配置されてなる請求項35に記載のコート製品。 - 【請求項37】 前記第1および第2基板はガラスからなり、前記第1およ
び第2窒化ケイ素含有層はSi3N4からなる請求項34に記載のコート製品。 - 【請求項38】 前記第1および第2NiCr含有層が実質的に酸化されておら
ず、かつ、実質的に窒化されていない請求項34に記載のコート製品。 - 【請求項39】 前記コーティングシステムをその上に有する前記一方の基
板は熱処理され、前記コーティングシステムをその上に有する前記一方の基板は
、前記熱処理の前に、a*が-2.6〜-6.0で、かつ、b*が-3.5〜-9.5である色を有
し、前記コーティングシステムをその上に有する前記一方の基板は、前記熱処理
後、その基板側から見たとき、ΔE* abが5.0より小さく、かつ、Δa*が0.8より
小さい請求項34に記載のコート製品。 - 【請求項40】 前記コーティングシステムをその上に有する前記一方の基
板は、熱処理後、その基板側から見たとき、ΔE* abが4.0より小さく、かつ、Δ
a*が0.5より小さく、前記コーティングシステムは熱処理前より熱処理後の方が
少なくとも4%大きい可視光透過率を有する請求項39に記載のコート製品。 - 【請求項41】 コーティングシステムをその上に有する少なくとも1つの
ガラス基板を備え、前記コーティングシステムは第1と第2の絶縁層の間に配置
された銀(Ag)含有層を含み、前記コーティングシステムの可視光透過率が少な
くとも4%増大し、かつ、その上にコーティングシステムを有する基板を基板側
から見たときΔE* abが5.0より小さくなり、かつ、Δa*が約0.8より小さくなる
ように、前記コーティングシステムをその上に有する前記ガラス基板が熱処理さ
れてなるコート製品。 - 【請求項42】 前記コートされた基板は、基板側からみたとき、熱処理に
よって、ΔE* abが4.0より小さくなり、かつ、Δa*が0.5より小さくなる請求項
41に記載のコート製品。 - 【請求項43】 コーティングシステムをその上に有するガラス基板は、熱
処理前に、a*が-2.6〜-6.0で、かつ、b*が-3.5〜-9.5である色を有する請求項
41に記載のコート製品。 - 【請求項44】 前記第1と第2の絶縁層は各々窒化ケイ素を含有する請求
項41に記載のコート製品。 - 【請求項45】 コーティングシステムをその上に有するガラス基板を備え
、前記コーティングシステムは一対の絶縁層の間に配置されたAg含有層を有し、
その上にコーティングシステムを有する前記基板は、熱処理前に、a*値が-2.6
〜-6.0で、かつ、b*値が-3.5〜-9.5で定義される色を有し、コーティングシス
テムをその上に有する前記基板は、熱処理後、その基板側から見たとき、ΔE* a b が5.0より小さく、かつ、Δa*が0.8より小さいコート製品。 - 【請求項46】 コーティングシステムをその上に有する前記基板は、熱処
理後、その基板側から見たとき、ΔE* abが4.0より小さく、かつ、Δa*が0.5よ
り小さく、その熱処理によってコーティングシステムの可視光透過率が少なくと
も4%増大する請求項45に記載のコート製品。 - 【請求項47】 前記絶縁層は各々窒化ケイ素を含有し、コーティングシス
テムは、Ag含有層に直接接触してこれを間にサンドイッチする一対のNiCr含有層
をさらに有する請求項45に記載のコート製品。 - 【請求項48】 前記ガラス基板と対になる第2基板をさらに有し、コート
製品は、熱処理の前後ともに、そのガラス基板側から見たとき、裸眼に対して実
質的に同じ色に見える請求項45に記載のコート製品。 - 【請求項49】 調和可能なガラス製品の製造方法において、一対の絶縁層

上に有する前記ガラス基板を熱処理する工程を備える方法。 - 【請求項50】 前記コーティングシステムの可視光透過率が少なくとも4
