[Claims]
(1) In selectively hardened products formed from chromium-containing alloys, selective hardening of the product
Placing a shielding mask (20) for carbon over selected surface portions of the product;
Activating the unshielded surface portion (22) of the product by electroplating at least the unshielded surface portion with a layer of iron (24);
An article of manufacture comprising carburizing an unshielded, activated surface portion to form a substantially carbide-free carburized surface.
(2) A first surface portion (16) has a first hardness feature, a second portion has a second hardness feature, and the second portion comprises the surface portion (22). Item 1. The product of item 1.
(3) The product of claim 1, wherein the second portion is formed as a carburized region at a selected location on the object.
(4) The product of claim 1, wherein the alloy comprises a chromium-containing iron or nickel based alloy.
Claim 5. 5. The article of claim 4, wherein said alloy comprises stainless steel.
6. The article of claim 1, wherein the second portion comprises a carbon-impregnated surface on a selected area of the object to produce a harder portion than the first portion.
7. 3. The article of claim 2, wherein said object is a ferrule.
8. The product of claim 4, wherein the alloy is alloy 316, alloy 316L, alloy 304, alloy 300, alloy C-276, or alloy 20Cb.
9. The article of manufacture of claim 1 wherein said ferrule defines a nose portion having a second hardness feature.
10. The article of claim 1 wherein said ferrule is formed from stainless steel.
11. The article of claim 1, wherein said stainless steel is alloy 316, 316L or 304.
12. A shaped or portion of a stainless steel alloy defining a first surface portion (16) and a second surface portion (22) different from the first surface portion; The product of claim 1, wherein the surface portion (22) is a carburized portion and is harder than the first surface portion.
Claim 13 The ferrule is defined by a nose portion for gripping a tube and a drive surface for driving the nose end inward, the nose end defining the second surface portion (22). 7 products.
14. In a method of selectively carburizing a chromium-containing product,
Placing a shielding mask (20) for carbon over selected surface portions of the product;
Activating the unshielded surface portion (22) of the product by electroplating at least the unshielded surface portion with a layer of iron (24);
A method comprising carburizing an unshielded, activated surface portion to form a substantially carbide-free carburized surface.
15. 15. The method of claim 14, wherein the step of disposing the mask comprises disposing a carbon shielding mask over the entire product, and selectively removing portions of the shielding mask.
16. 16. The method of claim 15, wherein said mask comprises a copper plate.
17. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein said copper plate is selectively removed.
