度が変る電気的に制御可能な熱変換基体と熱的に接触し
た導波路回折格子を含む。熱変換基体はファイバ上に熱
を生成するかファイバから熱を除去でき、回折格子に沿
って温度勾配を作る。実施例において、熱変換基体は局
所的な抵抗が回折格子の長さに沿って変る抵抗被膜であ
る。薄膜を通る電流は、薄膜の局所的な抵抗にほぼ比例
する回折格子に沿って温度勾配を生じ、電流によってチ
ャープの大きさが調整できる。得られるデバイスは簡単
で、コンパクトで、パワーは効率的である。
Description
体的には電気的に調整可能なチャープを有する光導波路
回折格子に係る。
ムにおいて鍵を握る要素である。基本的に光ファイバは
非常に低損失で長距離に渡って大量の情報を含む光信号
を伝達できるガラスの細いよりひもである。この最も簡
単な形では、それは第2の(低い)屈折率をもつクラッ
ドで囲まれた第1の屈折率をもつコアを含む小さな直径
の導波路である。典型的な光ファイバは、屈折率を制御
するために、低濃度のドーパントを有する高純度シリカ
で作られる。
ステム内で、光の特定の波長を選択的に制御するための
重要な要素である。そのような回折格子には、ブラッグ
回折格子及び長周期回折格子が含まれる。回折格子は典
型的な場合、材料の基体及び屈折率摂動、スリット又は
溝といった複数の本質的に等間隔の光回折格子要素を含
む。これらの回折格子を動的に修正できれば、非常に有
用であろう。

ザの安定化、ファイバ増幅器ポンピングエネルギーの反
射及び導波路分散の補償を含む各種の用途を見い出して
いる。
ニウム又はリンといった1ないし複数の紫外光に敏感な
ドーパントを導波路コアにドーピングし、たとえばエキ
シマレーザのような高強度紫外源に、空間的に周期的に
導波路を露出することにより、作製されている。紫外光
はリンドーパントと相互作用し、局所的な屈折率に長距
離摂動を生じる。従来の回折格子を得るための摂動の適
当な周期的間隔は、物理的なマスク、位相マスク又は一
対の干渉ビームの使用により得られる。
ステム設計の詳細、特にライン内分散及び分散補償ファ
イバ(DCF)中で起る非線形効果とともに、分散勾配
補償に厳密に依存する。そのようなシステムにおいて、
たとえば不完全な利得平坦性による光パワーの小さな変
動が、非線形位相シフトをつけ加える可能性があり、そ
れはシステムの最適分散マップを変更する可能性があ
る。この問題は動作の広帯域に渡って、不完全な分散勾
配補償に付随する減少した分散蓄積により、悪化する。
たとえば、約40nmの帯域で0.05ps/nm2.
km の非補償分散勾配で動作する典型的なシステムに
おいて、分散中の蓄積された広がり(分散補償ファイバ
中の約60%の補償を仮定して)は、ほぼ1.2ps/
nm.kmである。対応する分散蓄積は典型的な場合、
この値の2倍ととられ、2.4ps/nm.kmとな
る。従って、著しく不利益となることなく、得られる最
大伝送距離(L)は、L<104,000/(B)2|
D|(Gb/s)2ps/nm(1)(Bはチャネルレ
ート、Dはファイバの分散)で与えられ40Gbit/
sシステムについて32km,10Gbit/Sについ
て512kmである。このように多くは40Gbit/
sにおける動的な分散補償の必要性を予想するが、明ら
かにある種の10Gbit/sシステムには同様にこの
利点がある。分散を動的に調整でき、ファイバ中に直接
組込める分散補償デバイスは、特に魅力的である。

む。1997年9月23日ジェイ・ローツォン(J.L
auzon)らに承認された米国特許第5,671,3
07号を参照のこと。しかし、この構成は多くの欠点を
もつ。 (a) それは体積を要し、既存のパッケージ技術と両
立しない。 (b) 体積を要することにより、デバイスはパワーの
効率が悪く、デバイスの動的な応答に遅れを加える。フ
ァイバそれ自身よりはるかに大きくなりうる細長い平板
を加熱するのにパワーが必要である。 (c) 平板に沿って一定した熱の流れを維持するた
め、熱は連続して供給しなければならないから、周囲の
雰囲気への著しい熱の移動がある。 (d) 複雑/一定しない温度勾配とそれによる複雑な
分散を指定することが困難である。ヒートシンク及び熱
源は直線的な温度勾配のみを可能にする。しかし、多く
の場合、非線形なチャープを生成させるため、非線形な
温度勾配が必要である。

4及び15を設けることができる。薄膜13の抵抗は、
薄膜に沿って電流が流れた時、本質的に連続した温度勾
配が生じるよう、回折格子の長さ(軸)方向に沿って単
調に増加するのが好ましい。
より供給された電流は、回折格子に沿って温度勾配を生
成し、それは回折格子にチャープを生じる。たとえば、
示された実施例において、薄膜の局所的な抵抗に比例
(膜厚にほぼ逆比例)した速度で、導波路に沿って局所
的な抵抗熱を発生する。この局所的な熱は、回折格子に
チャープを生じる回折格子に沿った温度勾配を作る。

関連して述べたものと類似の可変抵抗薄膜13bを含む
合成構造である。均一な抵抗薄膜13aはSiO2 薄膜
のような電気的絶縁体17により、可変抵抗薄膜13b
から絶縁されるのが有利で、熱生成薄膜13a及び13
bは、別々の電圧源16a及び16bでパワーを与える
ことができる。薄膜13aに供給されるパワーを制御す
ることにより、回折格子の中心周波数が制御され、薄膜
13bに供給されるパワーにより、チャープが調整され
る。

グルモード又はマルチモードでよい。回折格子はブラッ
グ回折格子又は長周期回折格子でよい。
ファイバブラッグ回折格子(〜1550nmにピーク反
射をもつ長さ〜5cm)を、たとえばティー・エイ・ス

位相マスク走査技術を用いて、感光性光ファイバのコア
中に書き込んだ。
波路を局所的な抵抗が本質的に連続して、回折格子の長
さに沿って増すような抵抗材料の薄膜で被覆することで
ある。
えられる層を堆積するのに有用な装置を示す。図3は金
属源32から電子ビーム蒸発された金属31を受けるよ
うな位置に置かれた自動回転ステージ30上にマウント
された(そのポリマ被膜がはがされた)回折格子11を
含むファイバ10を示す。この装置は回折格子を含むフ
ァイバの部分上に、均一な金属被膜を生じる。
銀をメッキする装置を示す。銀エポキシのようなもの
で、蒸着された金属部分43の端部に固着された細い線
41、42を有するファイバ11が、メッキ槽44内に
置かれる。パワー源47はワイヤ41及び48及び電極
49を通して、銀メッキするための電流を供給する。フ
ァイバを槽44から引くため、ファイバはまた自動転送
ステージ45に固着される。引張る間、ファイバをまっ
すぐにするため、顕微鏡用スライド46の金メッキ片
を、ファイバの一端に固着し、ファイバを溶液からとり
出すことにより生じる金メッキ領域の減少を最小にす
る。槽から一定又は可変速度でファイバを引く間、電解
堆積によりファイバの長さに沿って厚さが変る銀の被膜
が生じる。あるいは、回折格子の長さに沿って、堆積さ
れる被膜の組成を変えることにより、局所的な抵抗が変
えられる。

着器中に置かれる。ファイバを回転しながら、ファイバ
上にチタン(〜100オングストローム、固着促進剤と
して)及び金(〜1500オングストローム)を蒸着
し、回折格子を含むファイバのはがされた部分の外表面
全体上に、金属の一様な被膜を形成する。はがした部分
の端面に、銀エポキシ(SPIサプライズ社)で細い線
を固着させ、銀の電解堆積のための電気的接続をする。
一定電流でのメッキの間、プログラムできる転送ステー
ジで、電解メッキ槽(テクニク社)からファイバを引く
と、銀の厚さに制御された変化が生じる。電解堆積は
1.5mAの一定電流で、ファイバの〜15cmの長さ
の部分上に、室温で行った。ファイバは各試料に対し、
〜12mm/分の一定速度で電解メッキ槽から引き、銀
の厚さを増すため、堆積は4〜5回くり返した。ほとん
どのデバイスの場合、薄膜の厚さは1−5μmの最小か
ら、10−30μmの最大まで、ファイバの回折格子領
域に渡って変化した。数オームの抵抗が典型的であっ
た。

合、銀の厚さはおおよそ直線状に、5μmから30μm
まで変化した。この具体的な構造はファイバの長さ全体
に沿って、2回の被膜と、試料の厚さの半分に沿った4
回の被覆によって作製した。

な広がりは、回折格子の長さに沿って単調かつ平滑に変
化する加熱から生じる。
変化の電圧依存性を示すグラフである。温度の変化は印
加電圧の平方に比例し、局所的な抵抗加熱及び温度変化
に比例する割合で、熱の損失と一致する。
は、マルチプレクサ/デマルチプレクサデバイスを用い
る波長分割多重通信システムで、特に有用である。その
ようなシステムにおいて、“中継”ファイバはいくつか
の波長λ1、λ2・・・λn で光信号を運び、中継ファイ
バから単一波長チャネルを差し引いたり、中継線上に単
一波長チャネルを加えることが望ましい。光サーキュレ
ータ及びファイバ回折格子を相互接続することにより、
各種のそのようなデバイスを作ることができる。典型的
な場合、回折格子により反射されたチャネルは、中継フ
ァイバから落ちるか、中継線に加わる。ここで述べる回
折格子により、チャネルが落ちるか加わる回折格子を選
択することができる。
ネルマルチプレクサ102及び受信機103を含み、す
べて中継ファイバ11により接続された波長分割多重
(WDM)通信システムを概略的に示す。ファイバ11
の入力は、いくつかの波長 λ1ないしλn における光信
号から成る。マルチプレクサ102はここで述べるよう
な1ないし複数の調整可能なチャープ回折格子104の
使用により、改善される。

複数の対(ここでは1対)のサーキュレータを含む。一
連の同調可能な回折格子104がサーキュレータの間に
配置され、それらの回折格子波長はチャネル間波長に配
置されている。

11に概略的に示されるように、単一長周期回折格子デ
バイスより広い帯域幅をカバーできる同調可能損失ファ
イバ90が、シングルファイバ11に沿った調整可能な
チャープ長周期回折格子91を連結することにより、構
成できる。所望の損失スペクトルは回折格子のチャープ
を選択的に調整することによって得られる。

含めることにより作られた動的に利得を平坦化した増幅
器110を示す。増幅器110は好ましくは第1段の出
力に配置された同調可能損失ファイバ90を有する複数
の希土類ファイバ増幅器段(たとえば段111及び11
2)を含むのが好ましい。これにより、最高のパワーと
最低の雑音指数が得られる。雑音があまり重要でない用
途の場合、ファイバ90は第1段の前に置くことができ
る。パワーがあまり重要でない用途の場合、それは最後
の段の出力に置くことができる。増幅器の応答を平坦化
するための長周期回折格子については、たとえばここに
参照文献として含まれる1995年7月4日にエイ・エ
ム・ベングサーカー(A.M.Vengsarkar)
に承認された米国特許第5,430,817号に述べら
れている。そのようなデバイス110は広い条件下で、
均一化された増幅を確実にするために、WDM光通信シ
ステム中で有利に用いることができる。

ネルは図12に示されるような利得平坦化増幅器でよい
1ないし複数の利得均一化増幅器及び図10に示される
ような追加/差し引きデバイスでよい1ないし複数の追
加/差し引きマルチプレクサデバイス102を通して、
通過する。信号は1ないし複数のWDM受信機154で
受信される。
となる理論についての出願人の最善の理解である。上で
述べたような形状を有する動作デバイス中の定常状態の
熱分布を計算するのに、非線形有限要素モデル化を用い
た。計算は適合するメッシュ細分化を用い、それぞれ
流熱損失を仮定した。ここで、Tは金属表面の温度、T
oは周囲の温度、σはステファン−ボルツマン定数、E
は金属表面の放射率、Aは空気中の自然対流を特徴づけ
る定数である。加熱薄膜及びガラスファイバ間の密接し
た熱接触を仮定し、金属の厚さは5ないし20ミクロン
の間で変えた。重要な結果は、(I)一次近似で、ファ
イバのコア中の温度分布は、抵抗薄膜により生じた加熱
パワーの分布に従う、(すなわち、ファイバの長さに沿
った熱の流れは、温度分布の形を、加熱の分布から強く
変えるようには見えない)及び(II)温度の増加は加
熱パワーに直線的に関係する。(すなわち、放射及び対
流は強い非線形プロセスであるが、ファイバから出る熱
の流れは、ほぼ直線的である。)これら2つの結果が正
しく、ブラッグ共鳴が温度変化に直線的に関係する時、
以下のように書くことが可能である。 ΔλB(x)〜ΔT(x)〜I2/t(x)

な(すなわち非直線的な)チャープを有する同調可能な
回折格子の設計のある程度の指針を与える。

- 【請求項1】 一連の屈折率変動を含む光回折格子を含
む一定の長さの光導波路;前記回折格子の長さに沿っ
て、前記導波路と熱的に接触して配置された電気的に制
御可能な熱変換基体を含み、 前記基体は印加された電気信号に応答し、回折格子の長
さに沿って導波路の温度を変え、それによって回折格子
のチャープを変える調整可能なチャープ光導波路回折格
子。 - 【請求項2】 前記熱変換基体は熱生成基体を含む請求
項1記載の調整可能なチャープ回折格子。 - 【請求項3】 前記熱変換基体は熱除去基体を含む請求
