Abstract

In an oxygen converter refining process, desulphurisation and dephosphorisation of the iron bath is carried out using, apart from basic cpds. such as CaO, MgO and MnO contained in the flux or slag, sodium cpds. such as Na2O added in the form of sodium carbonate as a component of the converter charge. The sodium carbonate is pref. added as briquettes or granules of 5-100 mm. during oxygen blowing. The process gives improved desulphurisation and dephosphorisation since, when incorporated in the slag, Na2O has a very high equilibrium constant for desulphurisation and dephosphorisation reactions and Na ions have 1070 times the desulphurisation power of Ca ions. Additionally, both Na2CO3 and Na2O are suitable for use in oxidising environments and form silicates, sulphates and phosphates of low m.pt.
