Abstract
Method for prepg. a catalyst based on oxides of Mo and Fe, which is active for oxidn. of methanol to formaldehyde, comprises (a) pptn. in aq. medium from a soluble Mo cpd. and a soluble ferric salt; (b) sepn. of the ppte. from the mother liquor and washing with deionised water; and (c) treating the washed ppte. to obtain the final active catalyst. Specifically, the mother liquor and/or the washing water is contacted with an anion exchange resin weakly salified with an acid, thus fixing any molybdic ions present in the liquors on the resin. These ions are then recovered in the form of an aq. soln. of alkali metal molybdate by contacting the resin with aq. alkali metal hydroxide. The ammonia content of the washing liquor is reduced from the 50-5000 ppm of prior art to below 0.05 ppm., to prevent pollution. The soluble molybdenum in the wash water and mother liquor is recovered and recycled.
