Abstract
The regenerating liquid is passed through the bed in the opposite direction to the working flow. The top part of the bed is treated with relatively concentrated liq. At a point in the bed a diluent is injected so the bottom of the bed is treated with dil. liq. 8% H2SO4 can be used to remove alkali metal ions from the top portion and in the bottom portion, where alkaline earth metal ions are removed, the sulphate ion concn. is kept below 1% to prevent pptn. of calcium sulphate. The acid usage is near theoretical.
